Concept Albums. What do you think? Which ones do you like?
What is a concept album?

A concept album is an album which tells a story within each song. Like a musical without the acting, just sound. I'll assume you knew that anyway.

The first concept album I heard *Without knowing, mind you* was Seventh Son of a Seventh Son - Iron Maiden. I just found out last week it was a concept album. I loved the album already anyway.
The whole album isn't a concept, though. Only 3 songs which tell the story of a man with psychic powers (The Seventh Son) trying to warn a village of an oncoming disaster. They laugh at him and when it happens they blame him etc.
The song are Seventh Son, The Prophecy and The Clairvoyant.

My favourite concept albums *I can't choose, so I'll say equally* are Operation: Mindcrime (Queensryche) and Scenes From a Memory (Dream Theater). Too lazy to type up the details, so:
Operation: Mindcrime story (http://www.apollowebworks.com/russell/mindcrime.html)
Scenes From a Memory story (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scenes_From_a_Memory)

Your turn!

I hear The Wall by Floyd is supposed to be like TDS, except much better/worse which is apparently dependent on your opinion of industrial music.

Easily NIN's The Downward Spiral and The Fragile.

Also now that you mention it, i didnt know about Seventh Son of a Seventh Son being a concept album but I guess i could add that too.

Protest the Hero - Kezia

Great album. One of the only concept albums I can actually take seriously.

It tells the story of a girl named Kezia who is being put to death. The first three songs are told from the perspective of a godly priest, the next three from a prison guard, the next three from Kezia herself, and the last song is told in a narrative perspective. The songs are all great on their own and the lyrics are written very well. You could read them having never heard the songs and they'd still tell a story.

Not really, each song within a concept album contributes to an overall theme/idea/story. The most obvious concept albums are usually very linear, like The Wall and Ziggy Stardust. But there are others ie OK computer, which is a protest album against the control that corporations/advertizing holds over our everyday lives.

Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say.....

According to the lead singer/songwriter, the whole album is about going out on a night out and your missus getting the hump with you.
