Does anyone like his stuff? I mean he's a good guitarist (might be a bit of an understatement) but does anyone feel that him "guitar masturbating” for 5 + minutes per song get's a bit tiresome after a while?

Personally I prefer Joe Satriani, though I think any instrumental rock is better appreciated in small doses. I couldn't bear to listen to loads of the stuff in one sitting.

this guy is a beast. he is more 'classical' than other guitarists. his speed picking is insane with the acoustic guitar. But i agree with you, Joe Satriani has more catchy and modern tunes than Malmsteen. Im a big fan of Satriani, he is a guitar God....

I think he's ****ing good at what he does, which is playing guitar with insane technical precision. That said, I don't care for the music he makes, and I also consider him a very below-par musician.

I find all guitar virtiusio (sp?) stuff to be pretty damn boring and overall pretentious as hell. Some of the stuff by some of the famous ones, like Sat'ch, are okay, but then you get albums full of the stuff and they pretty much define the term ''the same thing over and over again'' Talented musicians, but goddamnit do something different.

My freind actually has the nerve to call some stuff I listen to boring when one of his most listened to artists is either Vai or Yngwie. Oy, vey.

yes ..there's only so much "look I'm playing paginini on guitar" I can stomach ..was fairly big in the metal scene during the late 80's ..my brother went to see him in concert ..supposedly his ego is just as big

unfortunately most rock instrumentals are more about skill/technique ..try listening to Paco delucia (flamenco, acoustic), chet atkins, al demiola, mark knofler ..they tend to favour melody/good songwriting over technique/flash

one of my fave bands out of that malmsteen era is Alcatrazz ...specifically the years with Steve vai ..Malmsteen was the original guitarist ..Vai replaced him

I can't stand Steve Vai. He pretends to get so into his playing, too. Have you ever seen a video of him? It's probably the single largest act of masturbation I've ever seen. He acts like the most pretentious ****wad in the world, and he knows that he is. Whenever I tend to criticise him, too, people attack me because I'm not as good a guitarist as he is. At least I can write a melody using less than 50 notes.

You can rip on him all you want for being categorized as adult contemporary pop, but John Mayer is a great guitarist and a great songwriter.

I'm sure Vai and Malmsteen could actually write some decent tunes with their knowledge of music theory, but their egos and lack of subtly (and taste) will always cause them to ruin any chance the song ever had of being good.

However, Joe Satriani can write some kickass instrumental stuff and actually make use of tasteful and impressive lead work over it, so he's an exception to my general distaste of virtuosos.
