View Full Version : Wireless network not reconnecting
I've always had trouble with my wireless connection dropping, even though the router is less than twenty feet from my computer, but what makes it far more annoying right now is that Windows, for some reason, is no longer reconnecting to the network when it loses the signal like it used to, meaning I have to repair the connection every single time it goes down rather than just put up with a lag spike for a couple of seconds. I haven't changed any hardware, and I haven't updated Windows or changed any settings in there. It can get incredibly frustrating when you have to reconnect manually every few minutes.
Any help would be appreciated.

Using something other than the integrated Windows wireless manager? Google search for one.
Updated drivers?

some programs can overload the router causing it to reboot itself. like for me i have teh dlink di-524 and on xfire if i had show friends of friends or automatic updates for games on then it would reset my router a minute after it opened.

We need more details:
What router, what speed, are you using WEP? MAC Filtering?

No programs can overload router. Program which asks for an unauthorized access or an illegal request to receive data, router may (according to its Firewall rule) drop some or all packets sent or received, forcing router to restart every time this happens.
You can override this by allowing services/programs to send and receive data through router firewall.
Good Luck.

NetGear does not manufacture decent routers.
Anyway, try updating both your router firmware and your Wireless NIC driver (You must update through hardwire connection for the firmware; Meaning: No Wi-Fi firmware update, or router will be shot). Also check your router Firewall settings and set them accordingly (Consult with NetGear FAQ site for how to do it). Also while surfing keep all cell phones away from the wireless nick and your router because cell phone will interfere with some wireless connections.
But I do advice you to shop for better router; Linksys and D-Link are the two options you should consider.
Good Luck.

It could be the time you check for update, Also it’s better more solid connection if you update Windows service and use the connection manager which comes with SP2.
Good Luck.
I'm using a Speedstream 6200, which is a combination wireless router/modem provided for Bell's Sympatico Internet service. I'm using the latest firmware and drivers and whatnot. Granted, I have read all over the place that it's a shitty router, but still, I thought it was odd that all of a sudden Windows would decide to not reconnect, when it had done so previously.

Invest in better built network gear. NetGear made network equipment for quick buck, IMHO.
Cisco's Linksys is the best for home-network, D-link comes second.
Also since your router transmission/receiving filter may be poor, you may be experiencing foreign interference from other wireless in the neighborhood and cell phone in the house's transmission. sometimes regular electric current in your house can interfere the router/modem transmission if they aren't equipped right.
Good Luck.
