The following is a quick and easy method for finding your Steam ID without having to open a game and join a server:

NOTE: This method does depend on the existence of the file 'steam.log', however this will always be present if you have already played a game on your current steam installation.

Find your Steam installation directory, it's usually 'C:\Program Files\Steam':

Open 'steam.log' (if it exists). On Windows XP doubleclicking it should open the file in notepad, if not, open a new notepad window and drag and drop (http://img148.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dragndropho4.png) 'steam.log' on to that window.
Look for the first line that says 'ConnectionPool' in the second column:
CsComm ConnectionPool Apr-19-2006 15:02:30.795 [3980] Did not find an existing connection, attempting new connection 0,192.168.0.38:27030 for 0:0:1234567
At the end of that line it should say something like 'for 0:0:12345', '0:0:12345' in this case is your actual steam ID:
...attempting new connection 0,192.168.0.38:27030 for 0:0:1234567

It's usually required for various admin related purposes among other things.

Some people think having a lower number or something along those lines makes their account superior and therefore they earn higher status. No one cares really. When someone needs your steam_id to add you to the admins list, or when you join a clan or such, clan leaders usually request it. Thanks to himselfe for the independant thread.
