Dude, I am not worthy. I ****ing love it. The second one just blows me away, BEAUTIFUL melodies. Post more!
edit - Oh and, just because I think I overestimated myself in my reply in my thread, could you give me a thorough explanation of modulation. :/
Does it have anything to do with the mod wheel, or am I just an idiot, hah.

I reckon I'll post a thread like this. That is when I actually start completing some tracks instead of farting around.
Eraser, modulation is just... modulation. Editing variables such as frequenciy, resonance, pitch LFO's, et cetera. If you have a keyboard, it should have a modulation wheel. You can assign variables to it. For instance, the further up you roll it, you can increase resonance while decreasing frequency, or lower your pitch while increasing your LFO amount.
You don't even really need a mod wheel. That just makes it easier. Controlling such features with your mouse is essentially modulation as well.

wikupload should work now. they seemed to have changed their download thing to entering a short string of numbers.
I synced ableton and my 606 to my tr 707 and did a short track. I routed the finished track through my mixer and back and got some really cool and weird analogue effects! i have no idea why it sounded like that this once. maybe has to do with recording it in 80BPm then speeding it up and ****ing with the wav abit.

Loved the first and second song. In the first one, I was secretly hoping you'd introduce an awesome drum beat, but severely doubted it because of the peaceful nature of the song. But then you just blew my mind with that super heavy beat, out of nowhere, I was like "**** yeah!"

How do I actually download the file? I can only get it to open in the browser.
And its going to be some time before I actually have a demo reel to put it with. Like a year and a half lol. Still, it would be awesome to have music not everyone has heard yet.
Im going to save it in a folder with your name in a text file so I dont loose it. Do you want me to put your real name in it? Or just link to the myspace page?

a track i made that i think is pretty beautiful. ableton exported it with too much reverb and shit, and i routed it through my mixer in an odd manner which really affected the sound, detuned it alot at more heavy parts but i think that's a pretty cool effect :) makes it sound like old tape
The second one made my ears hurt with the scratchyness of it. I'm not sure if it was a problem on my end or what, but now I'm listening to the third one and it sounds great. I've yet to check out the first one.
Good stuff.

I had great fun recording this one, I decided to try and route every ableton track into a separate track on my analog mixer to let it be mixed there, see if it does it better or anyhting like that, and it actually does imho! sounds much smoother in a sense. anyway, i recorded some guitar playing for this one (not the first loop you hear, it's later in the break). I also sampled some monologue off a porn movie :O
everything was looped then i recorded it, altered the faders and some settings via midi completely live and raw! much more fun way of making music than spending days sequencing shit. might sound better the other way of course, but whatever :D
its a bit long but time flies when youre looping stuff and i think the length is somewhat bearable.. i've noticed alot of ppl don't like really long tracks but i enjoy diving into a mood for more than just a few minutes.
tell me what you think folks!

Of everything posted here so far, I like the third track you posted on the first page. Only problem is that three-repeat of the bassline, it kicks my subwoofer into overdrive for some reason and murders the ears. As a result, a lot of the other stuff is drowned out.
Good stuff all in all though!
First one on this page is also good. I like the strings you've got going on it. Drum beat sounds kinda weak, namely because of the reverb. Sounds like it's from an 80's movie, and feels out of place with the rest. My personal opinion is that you can either rework that a bit for the more full, industrial vibe that I think you might have been going for (I'm thinking the Aphex remix of "Raising the Titanic") OR just do away with it and replace it with something more fluid to accompany the strings.
CrazyHarij
28-09-2006, 04:45 AM
thanks man. yeah I was experimenting abit and the reverb was a result of ableton exporting the track in a way i didnt think it would, and i didnt save any of the wavs i recorded.. it's a bitch recording 8 minutes all over again so I just let it stay like it was, was fun for an experiment. The latest track sounds more like what i actually did when i recorded it, i placed reverb on the individual tracks rather than routing returns, somehow it doesn't work properly when you're sending your sounds out through individual channels.
Absinthe
28-09-2006, 04:52 AM
Yeah, routing between programs/hardware is always tricky business. But it can pay off in nice ways (ie. running a Subtractor line into Ableton's Beatrepeat effect is something I love).
I'd love to get into it more, but it kills my laptop and everything freezes up. I got a fat ol' Ableton project file running all sorts of crazy shit between Reason, Ableton, and Rebirth. Not to mention all the VST instruments. But I can't run it for any more than ten minutes before it gets shot.
CrazyHarij
28-09-2006, 04:57 AM
Yeah totally, i love having tons and tons of beat repeat instances on audio and beats and stuff with very low percentage of occurance and small filtered changes, making for tiny changes on the sound throughout the track, but it's a bitch on the system. my audio interface tends to slow down the system abit too.. i seriously need more RAM
I mean, you can always turn devices off as you're not using them but ****, i dont know anything that kills creativity more than having to do things like that. i guess that's abit why i'm keeping to a simpler sound atm, aside from just wanting to experiment and have fun

I love that reactor facility piece. On my Music Tech computer in school I have looooadds of Cubase files kicking around of stuff I've just titled ''generator 2'' and ''station [number of how many songs I have titled 'station here]'' and the like because I've recently found a whole range of kickass industrial/machine/factory/desolate/grinding synths. It's great making stuff like that. I've been making alot of recently because when it comes to synths and pianos and stuff Cubase is really good, so, with stuff like Amber and SAWI/II and lots of Boards of Canada being listened to, I've succesfully filled half of my school computer with a ton of files that I really cannot navigate my way around to. Too much.

Nice. I like how you vary your style and don't stick to those crazy ambient songs (storm1, although admittedly I like those kinds more =p).
Just out of curiosity, do you work on these songs on and off, or do you finish them in a single day? How do you find the inspiration to finish a song you got stuck on, or how do you even begin making one?

Just out of curiosity, do you work on these songs on and off, or do you finish them in a single day? How do you find the inspiration to finish a song you got stuck on, or how do you even begin making one?
haha i remember when i used to ask other musicians the same question.
let's just say, i don't finish my songs, i abandon them. they're usually nowhere near where i want them to be when i finish them but I feel like my energy is best spent elsewhere, like on a new track.
i have lots and lots of unfinished tracks that i like to go back to and polish up a little each day until they're finished. it's great to just leave the track for a day then get back to it, you'll have a much better objective look at it.
i used to finish most of my tracks in one sitting, like 3-4 hours but now I usually get the basics done, leave it and get back on it the next day and wrap it up. it's a much better of working imho. i would like to spend even more time on most of my tracks but i'm lazy as ****.
i like to look at my tracks as little brainfarts of melodies and feelings that i have when i make them. :D
what i find interesting about getting back on tracks and doing a little work is that they always take directions you never thought they would. the "bomb squad track" was supposed to be completely different with the original melody being part of the bridge or some odd thing at the end, but i chucked the original stuff out because i didn't like it.
finding the inspiration to finish a song i'm stuck on? never gonna happen. if i'm stuck on it i'll probably leave it till forever. just now i started polishing up some tracks i got stuck on months ago. it's a pretty interesting way of working.
how i start making one? don't ask.. i just chuck a few soft synths in, play around with the keyboard and suddenly i have a basic melody thing, usually i loop that for forever or add fun little changes that i think fit. i look up a good drum loop i have somewhere in the anus of my computer, or make a drumloop myself. i usually spend alot of time shaping the sounds with filters and little effects.. i like to jam alot and don't want to get stuck in the process of endlessly working on stuff with the mouse. most of the melodies just come spontaneously.
right now alot of my melodies come up when i jam around on my guitar. my tracks would have a lot more guitar in them now if it didn't take ages to set up the mic and record it..

^^ It's cool! i create electronic music too, but more harsh and heavy (like industrial ear rape) and love it!
your method of production sounds like me too!
if you force yourself to finish a track for the sake of it, it sounds like it has no energy or feeling. It's best to leave it unfinished if thats how it's supposed to be!

Crazy, you still dabble in MAX/MSP? I finally downloaded it and thought about giving it a whirl, but I fear I'm going to become frustrated with it just as I did with Reaktor (and Reaktor is supposedly the easier one to learn). I've just played around with some of the example patches, which are pretty ****ing nifty. Just running any of my tracks through the "granularized" patch is wonderfully twisted. Something I wish I could do in Reason. Can also get some good time-stretches on drums which Dr. Rex doesn't really handle. The most you could do to generate such an effect is with the samplers and drag out notes with increasing Start velocities, and even that only works to limited extent and would be hell to do with drum kits.
