New info from the gameplay videos

I thought it would be a good idea to create a common thread about the huge amount of information we now have about Episode 2. Lets start with some obvious features:

Several new enemies are seen, like the bug in the cave, a possibly poisonous antlion and of course the hunter. I really love that you can kill the hunters with heavy objects, since it makes combat much more varied.

Combines can now throw your grenade back at you and even more awesome, you can now kill a hunter-chopper with it's own mines.

The car looks ok, perhaps a bit to fast for my taste, but i guess that might change. Zombies jumping on the car is also a great addition.
Maps are now very open, at least it looks like that from video 5 and I believe you can spend several hours exploring and fighting all the mini-battles going on everywhere

And the physics looks fantastic. Now, does someone else has something to add to this list?

I don't know if it's just me, but some of the Antlions in the first video, in the area where Gordon drops that gate down to block them, looked white. And when the Vort or Gordon killed them some exploded into huge clouds of whiteness. Are those the poisonous ones? Seemed like clouds of acid.

If you consider how a normal trailer is constructed, the part about Alyx and GMan is most likely from the end of Episode 2's story arc meaning that they're showing the effect and you have to play the game to understand the cause for that particular clip seen in trailer.

What new technical aspects can we see in the video?

- There's motion blur, this could be prerendered like the TF2/Portal teaser, but it's more subtle and isn't a blend of that many frames (or however it works) so I suppose this level of motion blur can be realtime.

- Can't say if there's DoF, resolution is too low. But the previous HD trailer of Ep2 did show a blurred background.

- There's now lights that cast selfshadows, among those the flashlight. However, the self-shadowing seems to apply only to special lights (a seperate entity from env_light) and not to the static lights. Static lights (env_light) don't cast selfshadows, but the direction of the shadow does change depending on where the light is (can already be seen in Dark Messiah). When there isn't a env_light nearby, it uses the global shadow direction that you set in your map (how shadows work now in HL2).

- Particle effects look better. No idea what has changed, but blowing up an antlion never looked this good :naughty:

Damn you! I was just about to post that! Also, 2 wierd bars appear on the HUD when Gordon gets poisoned.
Edit: Now that I think about it 2 lines of writing appear when Gordon is poisoned in HL2, don't they. He only gets poisoned to 79 health though.

He does get poisoned. When he jumps down and fights those antlions in the 1st vid. He gets attacked by an antlion and then you hear the HEV suit beeping.

Video doesn't look captured by a cam, no shaking, no background noise, no environment lighting brightening up a screen, it's not taken from any angle.

That screen capture was from the IGN video, not the shaky cams that can be found on YouTube and such.

I think it's because they're in the hive or whatever, they have parts which fluoresce, like fireflies, etc. The antlion guard had it too.
A tad silly, seeing as they navigate by smell and all, but whatever - it looks awfully swanky.
Also, I get the impression that it's not a poisonous antlion variety, but that all the entrails/blood splat is toxic - if there was an antlion that attacked with poison, I think it'd knock a lot more off your health than the 20 or so in the video. The antlion insides weren't poisonous before though, so that partly scuppers my idea. But then they never shone either - maybe Valve just added it as a touch. It's definitely a cool idea.

That's an interesting interpretation but I am not sure. Valve is always wanting the player experience to be immersive (one of the reasons why Gordon doesn't talk they don't want to impose what they think Gordon would say with what we think Gordon would say) and it would be impossible for the player to pretend to have never known Alyx.

Yup I was actually thinking about Dog and when the topic was made about who was going to die, I thought we had neglected Dog. I would personally very upset if Dog died. Mainly because he is like awsome and can kick arse, but also because he is nice, friendly and playful, just like a real dog, he may be a robot but he shows emotions too. So if it was him I would say he sacrifices himself for Gordon or Alyx in some way. Also, imagine the impact on Alyx, I mean Dog must be Alyx's oldest friend. Valve did say we will see a large developing of Alyx's character in EP2. I think its a very good possibility.

I seriously hope DOG dies.
I reminds me of Jar Jar binks in Star wars (the first trilogy of course), both are annoying characters that could've been replaced with something better.

Just my opinion though.

Who cares , it will the most amazing boss fight ever! Plus , you would have to incapacitate DOG rather than totally destroy it. It could be a great non-linear combat situation and DOG throwing objects at the player and in return blocking and breaking the physics objects Gordon throws , that would be awesome.

I don't know about you guys...But the pheropods was one of the coolest aspects of HL2. The Raid onto Nova Prospekt with your 'buddies'...

I hope they come back in HL2Ep2. Not from the beginning but like after you survived the Antlion nest and defeated the Antlionking you could pick m up and use them to raid a combine outpost. Maybe like in HL2 they are limited in time and geography...

Yup I was actually thinking about Dog and when the topic was made about who was going to die, I thought we had neglected Dog. I would personally very upset if Dog died. Mainly because he is like awsome and can kick arse, but also because he is nice, friendly and playful, just like a real dog, he may be a robot but he shows emotions too. So if it was him I would say he sacrifices himself for Gordon or Alyx in some way. Also, imagine the impact on Alyx, I mean Dog must be Alyx's oldest friend. Valve did say we will see a large developing of Alyx's character in EP2. I think its a very good possibility.


I love the idea of Dog resting in peace, esp. thinking about how the resistance can resurrect him easily, with a new look and new features in future games. Imagine meeting "Dog Next Gen" in Half Life 3. Also it would be touching to watch him sacrifice himself for Alyx.

I'm afraid Dog is going to die. Perhaps not in that one-on-one battle with the Strider, but I sense that it is time for something real tragic to happen in the series. I don't think there would be anything sadder than Dog sacrificing himself to save Gordon and maybe some others. It's that whole "he's just a robot, but his emotions seem so real" thing that would tear me up inside. I don't know about you guys, but when Data died in Star Trek Nemesis, I cried.

I doubt Mossman will die - its too obvious. My money is on Eli - he has an emotional connection with just about every character, which from a storyline point of view opens up new threads.

Who cares , it will the most amazing boss fight ever! Plus , you would have to incapacitate DOG rather than totally destroy it. It could be a great non-linear combat situation and DOG throwing objects at the player and in return blocking and breaking the physics objects Gordon throws , that would be awesome.

Yeah, but this is Half-Life, which focuses on none cheesy story points. I don't know where all this "dog will be reprogramemd" is coming from. It was bad enough when people kept saying "ZOMG soldiers are now on our side". :)
