ok have i missed something....lately ive seen on a few forum posts that theres gonna be 3 episodes which we all knew....but that these episodes ARE hl3
ok wtf, have i missed something
i was under the impression that the episodes were a break from making a game for 6 years then releasing it, and a continuation of hl2, and that there was gonna be 3 episodes and then they would go and do a full hl3 game.
can someone clear this one up for me ta

The 3 episodes that are going to be released actually are Half-Life 3. That's about as clear as I can make it.

No they aren't, but that's about right. If you put the three Episodes together, so it is incorrectly said, they make up Half-Life 3. This is based upon a Valve interview where Gabe Newell says that he should have called Ep. 1 Half-Life 3: Episode One (and made the next game Half-Life 4), but couldn't because it was too late.

It shouldn't really matter if we're playing Half-Life 2 episodes or Half-Life 3 episodes. It's just a number.

I think there will be a Half-Life 3.

The HL2 episodes are what would've taken place in HL3. I believe Valve already said there will be another full game coming after the episodes, I doubt they're going to dub it HL4. But like someone else mentioned, it's just a number.

Yeah, HL2: Episode 1 really should have been called HL3: Episode 1.
But it wasn't!
Now I think Valve will reserve the name "Half-Life 3" for the next generational leap in the series - ie, some future project, perhaps on a next-generation Valve engine.
Does anyone else think this is likely?

I think this is such a load of horse cock. If the HL2 episodes are meant to be HL3, then that means HL2 in effect doesn't get any expansion packs.

That's referring to Episodes 1-3. There's still room for more "expansions", and I believe one is already under way by an outside developer.
But this is really just semantics. It makes no difference if you call them "Half-Life 3", or "episodes", or "expansions", or "miniature digital masturbation factories", or "pony rides". They are simply titles in the continuum of the series, and that's really all that matters.

So what is the next Half-Life if there is one?

Have you seriously forgotten about Aftermath? The episodes are Half Life 2: Aftermath.

Episode One IS Aftermath, they changed the name. The whole series isn't called Aftermath, just Episode One (which it isn't anyomore anyway).:afro:

I don't see why all three episodes won't all be Aftermath. Episode 1 doesn't hold up well as a stand alone game. It requires episodes two and three to make any sense. It's all one game, except it is broken up into three episodes.

Aftermath is the name of EP:1, which has nothing to do with the meaning of the word "aftermath".
Half-Life 2 won't make sense without Half-Life 1. So Half-Life 1 & 2 is the same game?

The "Aftermath" name holds no value any more.

Gordon Freeman. Year 2100.
Or what about Gordon Freeman, year 930?
Does anybody get the subtle reference there? 9..30..? Hah..O---kay..

there will be no half-life 3, valve's been hinting at that for like a year now, and episodes cemented that. the episodes will continue until Half-Life has been resolved.

Half-Life 2 won't make sense without Half-Life 1. So Half-Life 1 & 2 is the same game?
You clearly have no idea what I am talking about. Half Life 1 is a standalone game, Half Life 2 is a standalone game. Episode 1 is not a standalone game as it does not have the parts that a complete story needs. It is the beginning of a story arc, Episode 2 is the middle, where the story will be fleshed out, and episode 3 will be the conclusion and is where I assume the climax will be. All three episodes put together make one story arc. They are just broken up into three separate "episodes" so that content can be released to the public more often.

You guys are making my head hurt. As far as I see it, the story arc is what dictates the version number. The expansions to Half-Life 2 are like mini-story arcs, but they are contained within mostly the same plot lines as Half-Life 2, so they aren't half-life 3. Half-life 3 has to step up with a new "Chapter" in the story. If there is a 3 I think it needs to take place on another planet - with Gordon taking the fight to the combine. Of course that depends on how E2 and 3 pan-out. If the Combine on Earth aren't defeated by the end of the mini-series, there is still a job to do in the world of Half-Life 2. However I guess the latter would be rather samey and dull, so a new environment is needed.

I know they announced that Episode 3 will be the "end" (for now, at least) of Gordon's story. So, basically saying that the episodes will continue, but with someone else.

Valve never announced that Episode 3 will be the end of Gordon’s story. They only said the 3 episodes will finish the Half-Life 2 story arc.
