The old EP2 trailer used to lag for me when the Vorts were killing the Antlions. The new one is fine. I don't think your PC is to slow, it's probably something else.

i was kinda being sarcastic about the upgrade. but seriously it is a awesome trailer until it starts to lag. think i should delete it and download it to steam again?

I have an X800 XL and an Athlon 3000+, and I lagged in the first video. What about your TF2 and Portal videos?

You can navigate to the file in your Steam folder (Program Files/Steam/steamapps/"your e-mail"/media <<--off the top of my head) and open it from there. Just right-click on the file, select "open with" and then choose another player.
Another alternative would be to upgrade to the latest version of Windows Media Player.

Try checking your codecs.

That sounds normal. Quicktime can't open certain files that Windows can, and this could be one of them.
Try downloading one of the other players out there. DivX player should work well. Even better is something called VLC Media Player. I'd advise against RealPlayer though, as that one can get really annoying and bothersome.
But Googling DivX or VLC should take you to a download site for these players.

Have you tried redownloading it yet? Maybe there's something wrong with the file.

Maybe you could post a question to Valve support? I asked them a question and got a response, along with replies to like 5 follow-ups. They couldn't figure out my problem because it was a rare and weird issue, but they might be able to help you.

All of my Steam trailers lag. They are 720p. Too much data for my little PC to handle.

the only part where I get any lag is a little bit when the vortigaunt is carrying alyx
it's very consistent, and seems to be in the video itself
can anyone confirm that?

I can confirm that that part lags a little more than the other parts on my machine. Again, these trailers are hi-def and the bitrate is like over 10Mb/s.

Guys, let the video on that link buffer right until the end before watching it, you might then find it doesn't lag ;) :D

First of all, you need a good processor to watch HD movies (Apple states that for 720p QT, you'll need 2.8GHz Pentium 4, at least 512 MB of RAM, 64 MB+ video card).
It's also about bitrate... EP2 teaser's is more than 10MBps, while e.g. DoD Jagd trailer is ~7MBps.
Setting the player application's priority to High might be also useful.

You need a fast PC to watch HD video.
Your main concern would be your CPU. You also need enough RAM.
One of the other ways to help is to get your videocard to do some of the video playback to reduce your CPU load. For example my 6600GT with NVIDIAs PUREVIDEO decoder really reduces the CPU load (20% or so).
When you play back the movie(s) just press ctrl+alt+delete and go to the performance tab. Look to see if your CPU is at 100%. If it is then you are probably going to experience lag.
