A pair of games from Egosoft, X2: The Threat and X3: Reunion, were recently added to the growing number of games available via Steam. These critically acclaimed titles allow gamers to pilot spacecraft from a first-person perspective, while fighting adversaries and building an empire. Both feature lush graphics and have been called the best in class by several publications.

Isn't it?

Edit: That makes two of us then.

I wonder... Since I already own X3 will I be able to enter my CD key and play it on Steam?

Nope. It says in very fine print. Those who already own the game must and will be forced to buy a new copy of the game along with three more Half Life 2 Gold editions.

Good news, although pretty useless to me seeing as I have both of those games as retail copies.

I only played X3 for about 1 hour. The loading times between zones was very long, and performance was bad in general. The GUI was a bit better than X2's, but is still nowhere near Eve Online's.

Son of a bitch, I was gonna post this. <cries>

Anyways... 18 dollars for x3 can't be bad.

And there is going to be NO STARFORCE. The only copy protection will be steam.

How cool is that? I wonder if we people who bought the cds can get rid of starforce by installing it from steam.

UNfortunately though people... those of us who bought it on DVD cannot register it to steam. Sad day indeed.

However... egosoft will be releasing a no starforce patch soon.

I have X3... and i just can't get going in it. I can fly around and dock with ships and all that. I can destroy some other ships... But then thats about all i can do, i can't do the story cause i get stuck/lost at what to do after you attack the first pirate space station. I would really love to play through the game, but i really cant get the hang of it :(

According to some reviews (there are a lot of really harsh reviews out there) the game is very difficult to get your bearings in. Problematic interface coupled with steep learning-curve apparently.

Too bad, cause I am looking for an excuse to give more of my hard-earned cash to valve and for a second there I thought x3 might be it.

Although this is not a stupid persons game. You have to think...Alot

You don't need to follow the story. You're free to do whatever you want. Dock at a solar power planet, buy some cystals, then sell them for more at another station that needs crystals. Over time use the money upgrade and buy new ships etc etc.

I'd like to try the X3 demo before buying it off Steam, since I've been looking for a good space exploration/combat game since Freelancer, but I've heard bad things about StarForce.(who the hell copy-protects a free demo anyway?)

x3 is a great game, but I didn't reinstall it after format because the retail has starforce

maybe they'll let you activate the steam one with your retail cd key! /me hopes

I almost bought this retail a month or so ago. I might pick up X3 on steam now.

Rule of thumb:
If a third-party game does not require steam in order to run then you cannot register it on steam.

So the answer is no.

BTW, the people behind x3 has said that there might be a patch for retail in the future that removes the need for starforce.

I already posted in this thread that they won't let you activate the steam one with your retail CD key.

I also already posted that they will introduce a patch however that has no starforce... but how does that effect the first installation... I mean, you gotta install starforce initially, in order to install the game, and then to remove it.

I just wish they'd allow us to enter retail CD key into steam, to register it there... but they won't. bitches.

Steam is it's own copy protection, if you get this off of Steam there is no Starforce... :)

But wouldn't you benefit from automatic updates?

I have both copies too, but X3 never did what X2 couldn't satisfy which is a shame for a game of epic proportions. I just don't play them anymore.

I used to like X2, although I never got very far. I could never resist the urge to open fire on everything that moved. And everything that didn't.

Iced_Eagle: I know, I was just complaining that I wanted to try it out first instead of blindly buying it off Steam, but even the demo is copy-protected!

Ah, what the hell. I'll try the demo, then uninstall it and remove StarForce.
