What's the deal with the soldier whacking himself over the helmet with his own shovel? Secondly, does this mean that classes that formely used the crowbar are going to get different melee weapons? Perhaps scouts can hit enemies with his walky-talky and snipers can wallop people with binoculars :D .

there are going ot be changes to the TF2 compared to TFC, its not like they just updated the graphics and thats all, gameplay changes will be made....which could include the soldier having a shovel.... like the spy having a knife, the rest could have crowbars or they might give each class its own unique melee weapon....we wont know for sure until new ss's trailers, or info.

spies had knives in TFC too, and engineer had the spanner

Because he's hardcore.

Do you notice how in some war movies you see soldiers banging their helmets like drums? I think that's what this guy is doing except without taking it off first.

Or mabye I imagined the drums thing...

Soldiers are dumb now, I love it. Overpowered solys in tfc made baby jesus cry.

It's like the (American) football players when they hit each others heads with their heads (with helmets on of course). It's to show they're badass...or something like that.

Maybe they'll make a taunt button that plays a taunt animation whenever you press it. And that's the taunt for the sol.

He's psyching himself up for battle. You ever play offensive soldier? He's gotta get the RAGE going. He's gonna break into the enemy base like the goddamned Juggernaut, take out the SGs, rape some guards, clear the flag room for the runners, and secure the exit route all on 100 health and 200 armor. He needs to pump up his adrenaline.

The hitting himself with the shovel is his secondary attack, dumbo's.

I could have sworn I made a post asking if there was anything more humiliating then being beaten to death by a walky-talky. Anyway, if they do put in taunt animations, I'm sure we're all in agreement that the HWguy must go into wild breakdancing.

hahahah a more plausable taunt for the hwguy would be him flexing his muscles:p

If Valve put taunts like that into the game, I will have their babies.

It looks (sounds) like he tripped an alarm and got frustrated so he decided to bang himself on the head with a shovel, I bet it's an idle animation. :P

Darkside55

When I first saw it, I thought maybe he was just an idiot and couldn't find out where the alarm was coming from, so he was banging himself on the head trying to make it stop. That could be it too.

And I certainly hope they don't have taunts; they should just be idle animations, if they're in there at all. But I'd imagine those might get annoying too, having a bunch of soldiers standing around banging themselves on the head with shovels, medics adjusting their gloves, what have you. There's no time for idleness or taunting anyway in Team Fortress.

Yeah, most likely an idle animation like the scouts talking on the headset and the medic pulling his glove etc

..Just a guess :)

Forceflow

These are not idle animations, they would be terribly annoying.

I'd say, don't expect any idle animations at all in TF2, since I haven't seen any other Valve mod with idle animations (except for breathing).

It's just valves way of saying that this game will be FUN and not serious :D

HL1 had some funny idle animations for when you're holding the snarks. Gordon pokes it until it gets nasty and tries to bite him.

I came to the conclusion that the Heavy didn't even need a melee-weapon, other than his fists :cheese:

Idle animations like that wouldn't be a good idea. ESPECIALLY not banging your head. Why? Well, what would be the most common time to be idle in such an action packed game like TF? When you are hiding. If you had an idle animation like banging your head, which not only is something you would NOT do when trying to hide, but it would make a sound and everyone would hear it. (If it didn't make a sound it would just look silly) So that's why I don't really like idle animations, because they can kind of ruin the immersion when you are trying to hide in a dark corner or ready to pounce on an enemy and you are sitting there randomly tinkering with your gun or something, when you should be focusing on what you are going to do next.

The idle animations should show the characters holding out a fat sign with "AFK, LOL" daubed on it

Actually, looking at the HWguy now, I think his melee attack should be a Mr. Bumpo-style body slam. Unfortunately, if it was implemented realistically, it would take out the scout with one hit  .

So true.

I think it was just some small funny thing to add in. Realisticly, the soldier would be a heavy armed, cannon fodder goon, and probably isn't the brightest, so it shouldn't raise too much question if you see one hitting himself on the head with a shovel.

I wouldn't mind idle animations, but if there are, don't make the soldiers' animation the shovel hitting. I mean, what if ones hiding in the enemy base, waiting for the oportune moment, and then suddenly "clang clang clang!".

It wouldn't matter much, since the scout has only 80 Hp and gets mowed down by a little spread of bullets from the HW's minigun.

I imagine the shovel/helmet animation isn't an idle animation, but part of some rage-inducing move possibly. Like Darkside described, but perhaps with an actual in-game use.

Has anyone seen the first Hellgate: London trailer? You know, the one with the backflips? There's a lesson to be learned there, and it is: you're taking everything way too seriously.

But when you have too many backflips you end up with the next Full Life Consequences.

I thought maybye he was using his head as an alarm. Like hitting it to make noise and alert his team mates

When you are hiding. If you had an idle animation like banging your head, which not only is something you would NOT do when trying to hide, You are not supposed to hide/camp in TFC + I dont think you never move the view while hiding.

No, hiding is particularly useful in some situations. Such as a spy sneaking into an enemy base? Or a civilian trying to get to the exit without getting killed.

Either way it's pretty clear that it was just some valve sillyness, the spy won't be able to do movements like in the video either...

I'd imagine almost all of the animations won't be in game it looks. Either way, the only animations that will probably take place in game will probably be just simple movement animations.

Or maybe its just a scripted animation made for hte purposes of the trailer, like the medic gloves >_>
