View Full Version : Portal Multiplayer Idea

Maybe a Super Gravity Gun versus Portal Gun duke out for each team? Think about it, SGG people get to throw HUMANS around the place and totally annihilate everything in their path. Portal people play it more stealthliy, waiting for the SGG people to walk near their portals, then dump them out to a pit of fire (or anything else creative), that is if the SGG guys don't pull them in with them. :P

What do you think?

I think it would be more fun if Valve could figure out how to do a sort of 'super puzzle' idea when in multiplayer mode.

Teams are given matching objectives or puzzles that take a bit of time to complete. Whichever team finishes the puzzle first, wins. The better teamplay, the faster the objective is completed, and the better for the team.

I don't think Portal would make a good 'shooter vs shooter' multiplayer game. It would be much more monumental if Valve created a whole new multiplayer gameplay using this already unique game.

Super gravity gun v. ASHPD? No way; that'd be pretty one-sided; if you hit a guy once with the SGG, he dies instantly. You can then even pick up his corpse and kill another person with it. Using the Portal Gun, all you can do is maybe drop blocks on them or somehow trick them into taking fall damage. Even if a SGG'er does fall into a Portal, he could easily grab the Portal Man and take him along for the ride... On the other hand, pure Portal Deathmatch would be incredibly awesome, and I'm rooting for either a Valve-made multiplayer option or a quick mod...

Imagine it; portals flying everywhere.

Imagine this:

You open a portal on the wall. Suddenly you hear an enemy behind. You turn around and spot it, 10m away from you. The enemy is about to throw a radiator with the Gravity Gun in your direction. You open a portal behind the enemy which at the same moment throws the radiator. You dodge the radiator which falls into the portal behind you, comes out through the portal behind your enemy and kills it.

SWEET :D

ok, well maybe not SGG, but normal GG?

Plus you have to remember, this would definetly be a thinking man's multiplayer.

That would be awesome, but I still think the ZPEM (Zero-Point Energy Manipulator) would be too powerful. Perhaps if there were only those white blocks in the area...

EDIT: It would be even more thinking-man if it was pure ASHPD action...

Yeah, Portal DM with just the portal gun would be really cool. But objective mode would be even cooler, where you and your team have to fight the other team off using only the portal gun while trying to complete all kinds of portal-tastic objectives. There would most likely be some mind bending problems with players creating portals wherever they want in MP, but there could be some limitations in place to resolve them.

Create a portal on a very high point or in some fire, when you spot him create a portal under him.

Puzzels wouldn't work. In 2 weeks it would be impossible to beat the hardcore players that have memerized how to do them. But GG v PG (or ZPEFM v ASHPD if you prefer) might be very fun.

yea but you can design puzzles that don't just require knowing how to solve them to beat them quickly. havent you ever played garry's mod build maps? the solution is simple, but it still takes teamwork and time to complete faster than the other team...

I like that idea a lot. That could be 1 game mode another could be who can get the person trapped etc. Like 1v1 or 10v10 lol which ever team teleports the other players to death or a trap. Now that would be crazy. Constant teleports and just omg..

I'm afraid not. I've only played GMod once online. 'twas fun though, we set up traps for eachother and had a game of draughts :D

does anybody think that normal hl2: DM would benefit from the addition of the portal gun? I know I do...

No, it would make everything to confusing.

I agree Vass, way too confusing.

Yes it would ruin the gameplay if everyone started out with a portal gun, like how everyone starts out with a gravity gun right now.But I think it might possibly work as a specialized weapon that is hard to get and respawns less often than other guns. This would make it differnt enough than its cousin the gravity gun and yet still retain the same level, if not more, of ingenuity.

No, wait, think about it... there could be campaigns released for multiplayer by both Valve and the community. Players have to work together to solve problems or they won't be able to get out on their own.

How do you this? Well, for a start, players can spawn in different places and have different objectives in them.

i think it would be too easy to trap someone in an endless drop, just put a portal below them and one above them and their stuck

Nope, you can easily veer to one side and then land on the border of the portal. Tried it in Narbacular Drop.

i say have it as an optional weapon replacement in hl2dm so that if you like you could replace the rocket launcher with the portal gun.

At least that way i won't have to deal with rocket spam in overwatch or runoff, just crazy 'porters

Plus imagine the fun you can have using them in conjunction with slams.

Indeed. Personally, I found it nearly impossible to do an infinite drop in ND.

narbacular drop has really over-the-top air control
