Appears I've accidently stolen the thunder from this thread by posting the same news in a more popular section of the forums.

My bad.
At first when I saw the thumbnail I was afraid the game was just going to be that 2d thing, but then when I saw the source version I was like 'phew'...and 'wow'

This gun will never be in a Half Life game for one reason:
They would have to make a Gordon model.

I scrolled through the entire page, but I can't find it.
EDIT: Found it, but I had to click on a separate link to find it, am I the only one that did this?

Well, it is set in the Half-life universe.

The high res version of the trailer shows a guy in an outfit that looks somewhat like an orange prison outfit. Certainly isn't Gordon :)

Portal is looking great. I'm hoping we will see the realtime motion blur that seemed to be in the video in the final game.

Is it just me or does the lighting and/or graphics engine in the trailer look VERY upgraded?? I think we just got our first glimpse at source's new lighting system....

very good point, but u know there might just have to be one....cuz this just adds so much depth to the gameplay....we shall see.....ide love to have this in the hl universe.

Looking at the vid, i`d say it will be a series of maps which are in themselves puzzles, which get harder and more complicated the further on you go.
Like the video says, a training program for someone or something.

so its just a seperate mini-game if you will? u dont think they will put this into the HL universe?
Also:
Just watching it a 3rd time, i noticed the player also grabs items with the portal gun, so it seems to also have a gravity gun functionality to it. If it WAS added into HL, i think that would not be the case, i doubt they would combine the 2 guns.

It looks damn awesome, but where's the whole "set in HL universe" thing coming from?
I'd assumed it was an independant setting...

Excuse my ignorance, I've heard about this 5 minutes ago and just saw the video - is that supposed to be in Ep.2 or come with Ep.2 as a seperate kind of puzzle game? Or something else?
Edcrab

As far as we can tell it'll come as a seperate puzzle game: but there seems to be some confusion over where that's set. :o
You're not the only one wondering what's going on ;)

The GameSpy article says it's in the Half-Life universe.
Take what you will from it. They may have heard right or they may have heard wrong. Further confirmation is necessary.

Heres what I speculate:
The 'training program' is to train subjects (within the HL universe) to use the portal gun, and more likely to test the portal gun's effectiveness. I suspect G-Man uses some sort of device like this, and perhaps they tie together somehow...

Gamespot said it's in the HL world too.
I'm speechless. It's just awesome and looks to have alot of level that get real crazy and tough to figure out. I love it.
Valve has done it again.
It doesn't look we will be playing Adrian. The model suggets a rather old guy with bald spots . It doesn't fit with the Adrian feel , though we never seen his face , so who knows.
The gun model is just HOT.
I had this smile on my face during the video. Valve are gods among men, they did it again.

I confirmed it with Doug Lombardi - it is set within the Half-life universe.
Can you confirm that they are going to update/fix those awful fire effects that only work horizontally and are revealed to be 2d sprites when viewed from above? If portals is going to have us flying all over the place, the fact that fire looks like a goofy bunch of thin 2d panels from above is going to be a serious issue.

Aye, I love HL2's fire.... except when looking from above.
Well, Episode 2 is supposed to have an improved particle system.
But still, making pretty fire without using sprites of flames is very hard. It can't look 'fluffy' like fire does in a lot of games that use particles for it. I prefer HL2's fire over orange colored dots any day.

A '3d' fire system would be a pretty tough challange. Not only do you have to overcome the current problems with particle fires, but you have to consider users that don't have the latest in graphics... Valve is determined not to leave the "old-computer-parts" users behind.

Max Payne 2`s fire worked fine for me, why can`t it be like that?

I'm thinking some of this technology could make it into the upgraded half life 2 + episode 1 that valve spoke of in their update for the 360 and ps3. That would totally kick ass playing all the games with that level of quality.

Thats way to obvious to be a coincidence :| There screwing with us.
What do you people mean it is set in the Half-life universe? To me it doesn't seem like it has anything to do with Half Life as a story.
Adrik_Senturu
19-07-2006, 02:24 AM
Well apparently it is :| You really can't gather much from the trailer itself because its just to show off the portal gun and what not . I'm assuming that if its set in the HL universe theres gonna be some story set behind it too. That might be revealed in another trailer maybe? :O
It looks like the HL universe, what with the very familiar design of the turrets, for example, and the fact the portal gun seems to be a pretty close relation to the gravity gun.
Just where exactly it fits in the HL universe I would say was more open...
Valve has said that it's in the HL universe, that's why...
I just find a portal gun to be alittle farfeched to be in the HL universe. I mean, the Combine haven't developed intra-universe teleportation yet, and this teleportation has just been reached by Eli and Kleiner, again (for the seconds time I mean, after Black Mesa). I, for one, am glad to see this cool gun in another game, I just don't really want it to be a part of HL, considering other technologies. It just seems to far out.
My thoughts.

People have told me a similar gun was in OpFor... So it's already technically in the HL universe.

But we have no idea what the timeframe is. It could be far in the future. Or it could be a whole different party than the Combine and Resistance, maybe you're a G-Man in training. Or a pawn of the G-Man, since he's losing grip on Gordon he might be training someone else to be inserted into the battle with a new kind of weapon to complete his agenda.
