If some other singer had performed that song, I reckon it would be world-famous. Famous, meaning songs like Sitting on the Dock of the Bay etc.

Well, as this is single musicians and not groups, I'll go ahead and be the first to mention Trent Reznor.

His ability to write and arrange songs in so many different styles and patterns with so many different instruments is nearly unparalleled today.

I do like Somewhat Damaged... the heavy drums, the powerful (if not varied) bassline, the layered arrangement, the not-entirely-blunt lyrics, all contribute to the awesomeness of this song.

Talented. Versatile. Awesome remixes. Even his peel-out is great. Eccentric. And all the while, he couldn't give less of a shit about the whole thing. He is my idol.

Because he is pretty much all over the place, reccomending a song is hard. But, if I had to choose something approaching an epitome, it would be Ziggomatic 17. One long-ass track that goes through so many transformations before crystalyzing at its end. It's beautiful.

Since he is essentially the band, I included both.

His music is incredibly beautiful yet pretty simple. And his lyrics have some of the oddest metaphors and symbolism I've ever heard. His music really makes you appreciate life and those around you. The first song I believe I heard by him was "King of Carrot Flowers" and the very first lyric When you were young, you were the king of carrot flowers played and I instantly fell in love. One of his most simple songs, yet the way he sings it and the comforting melody take you away into his mind and set you up for what to except with the rest of the album In the Aeroplane Over the Sea.

Hmm that was a bit long...

One musician? Hm. That precludes several of my favourites and leaves me wondering whom I should mention.

How about Travis Tritt, primarily for Best of Intentions (http://www.pandora.com/music/song/49f13fe91a88886e)? "Never could build you a castle, even though you're the queen of my heart."

Dead Kennedys

Y'know, I could love Dead Kennedys for their humourous and witty lyrics alone. Biafra is a genious. He didn't care the consequence; he went up against alot, but he wrote about it, twisting it with his own darkened humour. The guy was so tongue-in-cheek, taking shots at people and things in songs [moronic drunkards in 'Too Drunk To ****' and all-talk/mouth revolution wannabes in 'Life Sentance'] as of his own opinion on them. The music, too, is great. Catchy riffs and basslines from Ray and Klaus, abliet simple.

Eh, I'm no good writing reviews. Listen to Dead Kennedys.

No, its all of these things! Amazing live (mega-dance-pit-fun-spectacular!), intelligent and relevant lyrics, seemlessly blending every genre under the sun to produce mighty rock goodness. Give them a few years, and they could be big, maybe even Capdown big.

I completely agree with ludah.. richard d james has achieved financial independence making music only for himself. and he's made most of his music in his morning robe. plus that he's discovered other very awesome musicians like tom jenkinson (squarepusher) and mike paradinas (mu-ziq)

i can't be arsed to recommend a song, partly because no one really gives a shit about music anybody else likes, and partly because he is rather prolific and very varied in his musical styles.

Heh, hardship is being high 95% of the time? :p

And he did play the drums in Piggy... sounded good becauce that song was supposed to be messed up sounding (ie piano).

But I have to agree wholeheartly. His music as brought me much peace in troubled times /nasty cliche.

These two might as well be one musician because the way their influences synch is something from without time and space as you know it. Check out the outrageously wonderful album, Angst in My Pants, to see what I mean.

He has had some problems. He brought heroin addiction on himself, but alcoholism is a disease, and dealing with both of those at the same time and coming out clean of them is impressive. We almost didn't get With Teeth or any more NIN... Trent nearly died of an overdose a few years ago.

John Petrucci - for his solo album Suspended Animation

I was just about to add this! :D

I finally got the CD yesterday and it blew me away. John never fails to impress me. Why? Because he is the most creative and original guitarist on the planet. He incorporates every single musical style in his music, not to mention he's probably the most technical guitarist of all time. :)

I was kind of hoping the whole a album would be a bit more like Supermassive Black Hole, I liked the change in direction for that song quite a bit. :(

And David Gilmour. The noises and atmospheres he creates in his songs are amazing, hearing him play any solo, improvised or otherwise, is just beautiful.

Les Claypool (Primus)

The mans a genius. Enough said. The fact that he can play a complicated bassline like Tommy the Cat whilst singing is impressive alone. Plus the fact that what he writes and plays is actually original, something alot of bands today have trouble doing. And he doesn't overuse any of his techniques unlike all the virtuosio (sp?) bass acts like .. erm, I've forgot his name now, but the bassist that played with Vai or Satriani. (I get them mixed up because they are so boringly alike) But yeah, Claypool wins.

Yeah, Les auditioned for Metallica at one point, I think after Cliff's death. Most likely then anyway, but they thought his style didn't suit the band. But hey, we might not of got Primus if Les was part of Metallica instead of Jason, and who knows what Metallica would of sounded like with Les..

Yeah, their MoP cover is awesome, albiet short. I used that for my GCSE exam music peice. Sounded sweet.

I would say Explosions in the Sky but it's a single musician and you can't just pick one person out of Explosions in the Sky (they're playing like 3 different tunes at the same time but they weave together so wonderfully that they're inseparable -- imposible to choose just one).

So... Jonsi from Sigur Ros. Amazing. I can listen to Sigur Ros over and over again and it just gets better, and his voice is absolutely beautiful. He also plays his guitar with a (cello?) bow.... awesomeness.

Coming in second would be Efrim from Godspeed You! Black Emperor / A Silver Mt Zion. I'll admit he sings in a slightly.. annoying voice, but once you listen to God Bless Our Dead Marines all the way through and every other Silver Mt Zion song about 10 times through, it's so beautiful and so painfully human. I seriously hated it the first time I heard it... as in, "What the heck is this crap. Ouch, my ears..." but after a while you start to love it. Besides, perfect voices are... boring. Also, his lyrics are just haunting. Look up the monologue from Dead Flag Blues for proof of that. That song could probably give people apocalyptic nightmares.

So... post-rock. It's great. :D

I was appaled to listen to King of Carrot Flower. Godamn, it's an amazing song.

How does that make sense?

Anyway, my vote goes for Stephen Jenkins, lead singer of Third Eye Blind. He is the most talented lyrical mastermind of our time. This is because he's not a goth alcoholic who sings about his dead mother or high school psychology terms. He was valedictorian at Berkeley with a degree in literature. On top of that, he was raised in a creative and artistic environment. He's too awesome for his own good.
