What in your opinion are the most awesome game intros?
Me:
SSX Tricky
I really like that song and the video really fires me up.
SSX 3
Again, it really fires me up.
Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2
Hell March on its own is legendary. But the intro is brilliant, it's not too fast paced but takes its time and gives you an eyefull, the tanks pouring out of transports, the V3s being launched, fantastic.
Final Fantasy X
I haven't played much FF so I don't know how this compares with the others but Sin destroying the city was great and I really like the music.
OP4
Flying in a chopper, when BAM, you get shot down, wake up and fall unconcious with various scenes. This was actualy the first taste of HL I had (demo) and I f*cking loved it.
BS
The elevator, you really get to see the facility going to shit in this scene. The tram crashing, the aliens porting in, the Vortigaunt examining the scientist.
HL1
The train ride is brilliant, so atmospheric, really awed you. Then the test chamber, just brilliant.
HL2
Pure atmosphere, pure brilliance.

Are these intros as in, the first part of the game? Or intros as in a CG movie sequence as an intro?
If the latter, then I say:
#1 Warhammer 40K Dawn of War
#2 Onimusha 3
Reginald

X Men Legends 2
Me and my friends had beer and we bought the game second hand on the cheap. We fired it up and seeing all the X Men made us scream really loudly... in a manly way of course. Then proceeded the Smackdown.
Half Life 1 and 2
Most people here will know why.
Soul Calibur 2
That game gets me fired up whatever, but seeing all the CGI characters duking it out before seeing Nightmare on teh mountain with the Soul Shard. RAWR!! :borg:

Freespace 2 - Everything in this intro is pure brilliance, the music, the sounds, the impressive CG. Yep, pure brilliance.
Freedom Fighters - I'm the only one loving this game on this forum? The intro is freaking brilliant, especially the incredible awesome music (Jesper Kyd for the mother f*cking win!), also the fact that everything is ingame graphics, no CG. At first, I thought that the submarines in the beginning of the video were all CG, but no-no, if you look closely you'll see that it's realtime. Impressive.
Metal Gear Solid 2 - I've got two favourite intro parts here, the first, and my personal favourite is the intro you when you first start up the game. The music fits perfectly (Harry Gregson-Williams am rock total). Secondly is the intro-sequence to the tanker. I remember when everyone at E3, when it was first shown, was blown away. Good times. :E
Shadow of the Colossus - The definition of art. Everything in this intro is so beautiful that you can almost touch the environment.
Half-Life - People didn't like the intro-sequence to Half-Life because of its length, I'm exactly the opposite. I love lengthy intros, especially Half-Life's because you were a part of the intro, you could move around in the train while you were introduced to the game. I love that.
Killzone - Excellent intro, the use of Brian Cox's voice makes it really good. Good use of music too, fits in well.
C&C: Red Alert - Ahh! Hell march <3! I remember when I first booted up the game on my PSX, I just fell in love instantly.

Onimusha 3s CGI intro is ****ing amazing, MGS2s tanker intro is great, MGS3s intros to each mission, both the parachute one and the one with you in the aircraft being chased by the MiGs etc.:D

Total Annihilation- Hey, that narrator is what made that game, with or without a proper story

I thought the intro to Half-Life 2 needed to be more like the lenghty intro to HL1. Sure, it was nice being in the trainstation as the credits roll slowly by, but I wanted more of the city to gawp at. I wanted the train to rumble over bridges, over canals, past slummy buildings, see stuff happening on the streets, etc. But yes, it was ace.
The intro to MGS2, too. Amazing.

The intro to MGS2, too. Amazing.I agree, but I think a median would have been better overall. Half-Life's was good, but it does drag on a fair amount, especially so if you're replaying the game. I guess Valve took that into consideration for Half-Life 2, but went a little too far (well, not far enough).

Half-life 2: Episode 1
It's simply one of the best game intros I've ever seen. From the Vortigaunts saving Alyx, to the G-mans removal and to ultimately waking up to see DOG, and then looking up at the now crumbling Citadel. I've never felt such a strong connection with something in a game. Following HL2's ending, with the reactor explosion, and then seeing that swirling cloud at the top of the Citadel I was thinking "My god, what did I do?!"
Half-life 2
Brilliance. The moment I stepped out into that plaza I knew this game was ****ing awesome.

Well, yeah, but I meant as stuff to see. I kinda meant as in the same context of the intro to Half-Life 1, what with you being on the train and seeing all this stuff happen outside the windows.
EDIT: The Resident Evil 3 intro video was awesome aswell. Watching the helicopters come flying down the street as the camera pans to several police cars and SWAT vans skidding into a defensive position as a horde of zombies come stumbling down the street right through to the bloody end of the helmet rolling in the puddle of gore with the car door gently swinging.

Tell me something - wouldn't the plot have been rather more engaging/surprising if you didn't know your superior was conspiring right from the start? It wasn't so much the content, even though the voice acting was well done (especially so, considering the voice-acting throughout the rest of the game). For me, it was the cutting and editing while they talk over the slaughter in Paris etc. It felt just like the intro to a movie before they cut to the intro credits and the title announcement - zooming into Page's eye as he emphasises "...Gods", then bang, you're playing.
I dunno, it's just one of those sequences that makes you remember back to the day when gaming just felt... right. The safety of the training map with Jaime Reyes, Gunther and Anna instructing you, the soothing music (yes, I remember it to this day and still maintain it's the best gaming music ever) as you progress through. Follow that with Liberty Island, and, damn, I just can't express how much I love the game.

It's so long ago I don't remember. :(It's a little sketchy in my mind, but from what I remember it leads in with D'arci chasing some thugs, in which they get into a fight, then those mysterious suited blokes appear and own the place with their minigun pistols. It ends with them throwing a bomb and leaving, panning out to D'arci legging it away and the explosion going off at the stroke of the millenium. I always thought it was pretty cool.

The editing, the camera were all pretty amateurish. It did not feel like a movie at all, it felt especially amateurish compared to the intro of metal gear solid. That intro was carried by the smart dialog compared to other games.

I disagree, Cam Clark deliverd some fantasticly credible and passionate voicework, and the other characters do not fall that much below him, you could almost taste the betray and arrogance in Ocelot's voice, the fear in Otacon's voice, the shear and utter indifferance in Gray Fox's voice, the dialog in Deus Ex was a lot more flat and cold then it needed to be, it went beyond setting the grimmy mood, it gave the characters less emotion then was good for it's own sake.

I completely agree, the voice work in MGS was superb. Deus ex's dialogue was indeed, at times, flat. Not everywhere though. MGS dialogue is not that great, and Kojima really needs to work on it - because it is one of the only things that pulls MGS down. It's not terrible, not by a long shot, but it is far, far from fantastic.

That said, I really want to make a drinking game where you do a shot every time Snake repeats something in the form of a question.

I'd say a better drinking game is to play MGS2 and whoever loses track of what the hell is going on has to chug. That may not yield any better results, however.

DoW's CG intro is great, and so it's HL's tram sequence.

Me too!
I was expecting an odd citizen or two to jump over walls, whilst being chased by civil protection, along-side your train

Pretty much the whole sequence without a gun was an intro sequence. I rather enjoyed it.

The only thing with the dialogue is they don't really talk like normal people. They speak in monologues.

I love psychonauts, it's with mgs my favorite game of all time. Now the intro is nice, but nothing that special IIRC. I mean it's just Raz falling in to the meeting at the campfire and acting overly exited. All executed nice, with nice visuals, dialogue and acting. But not something that really stands out, nothing that sends chills trough my spine. It's sets the mood very good though.

For me it's have to stand as DoW, BF 'Narm and any of the C+Cs for a CGI intro.
But any of the Half Life's are awesome for an in-game intro...
I'm trying to find a computer version of Freedom Fighters, loved that game when i was playing it on a mate's PS2 when he rented it. But i can't find it anywhere - anyone want to mail it to me?

WC3 definently had some good ones.
Starcraft just friggen amazing. Every single one. Diablo 2's....wow. The start to Diablo 1....very nice. Blizzard is so damn amazing.

Dungeon keeper 2. It sets the scene for the rest of the game perfectly, its not entirely serious and the good guys get thier arses kicked but a big red deamon and his mates.
Jagged Alliance 2: Urban Chaos. Sets the stroy perfectly, AIM lies broken, its members scattered across the world, but there is hope, maybe liberationg Danubia will revive AIM to its former glory. And it has an exeptionally cool end line - "My destination: Danubia. My mission: Urban Chaos..."
Brood War - the best intro to any Blizzard game. Ever. (Or until Starcraft 2 [remains quietly hopeful that it will come, one day...])
MIA - Flying into the 'Nam and the closing line "Freinds in low places had told me Vietnam was like going to hell, sure looks beutiful though..."

Half-Life 1 and 2(including episode one): Well, you guys already know why.
Deus Ex: The conversation in the beggining was pretty cool and made you wonder what they were talking about.
Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3: Just plain amazing how they're shown.
Operation Flashpoint Resistance: The intro level and cutscene that shows the Soviet troops moving in and killing citizens in their path really shows how ruthless they are.

FFVIII had a great intro. The cutscenes of the game were also probably the only good part of it..
