I've never played the first to, but I've only heard favourable things about them so I guess I should track them down.
Besides, if they're made by Bethesda, they must be good.

That's the best promotional piece of art I've ever seen.
Interesting, Bethesda seems to be handling this project :)

Semi-treacherous. It reminds me of these:

But - all is forgiven and forgotten once I control a soldier that dons a gas-mask. You can't have fallout without gas-masks can you?

I agree (ok not the best) .. it's really effective: idealic poster from yesteryear promoting the future as an exciting safe fantasy while the burnt edges suggest a reality that isnt mirroed in the poster
kudos to the marketing team, makes me want more

But Fallout did it way before that. Look at art for the original game and the videos they had in it.

We'll probably be seeing a 360/PC release. And that's going to anger the hell out of Fallout fanboys :P

which is a copy of Vargas' style from the 40's and 50's (his advertising illustration) ..but it's meant to look like that

I woonder what engine they'll be using...think they'll make the leap to have FO3 be first person like Oblivion?(or generally be using that engine)

I hope they use the engine, but I doubt they'll do FPS. Fallout fanboys will uproar if this game isn't an isometric, turn-based RPG.
Though, I personally would love to see it in first person.

If they do that I will become very violent for delfiling such a wonderful series!

To Stern: Yeah, I got a book of Vargas' art for Christmas one year, and it's good. And to let me clarify, I meant not THE best promo art, but pretty freaking good. I am given to hyperbole.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Bethesda using an updated version of their Oblivion engine. And if not that, then UE3. But it's most definitely going to stay true to the original's isometric turn-based style. I can't imagine how frustrating it would feel to play a turn-based RPG in first person.
[edit] Really excited about this. I still haven't finished Fallout 1, and I haven't even started the second... I guess I've got some catching up to do.

I sure hope that it isn't an FPS...
Fallout with next-gen graphics would be nice though.

While, admittedly, I've never actually owned a Fallout game, I've spent many a great night at friends' houses, playing through them... so freaking good :D

I'll never have my post-apocalyptic FPS nonlinear game :(
I really hope they do use the oblivion engine for fallout3.
By coincidence, while playing oblivion I found myself wondering what a post-apocalyptic setting would look like using the same engine, you have to admit it would look the business.
It would make financial sense to the company as well, they would be able to concentrate on the art assets and plot/scenarios rather than worry about building a whole new nextgen engine.
Time will tell I suppose.

Apparently a similar poster was at E3 last year...
Still cool though :)
If they use the saem crappy engine they used for oblivion(gamebyro) I will kill someone.
Crappy thing renders everything. I stick a wall infront of a half-billion complex NPC's, it should not render the half-billion complex NPC's. But since with gamebyro the wall has to be an imported model....it will render the wall and the half-billion NPC's. Gamebyro is an all around engine not particuarly made for any certain type of game. You could get a lot more performance out of an engine.....say UE3?

I've just realised that this will be the first Fallout game that actually looks good (if what Bethesda did with Oblivion is anything to go on). If there was a surefire way to kind of PLUS the good looks with the writing of the first 2 games then we'd be looking at best game evar material, but I suppose as it is we can only live in hope.
Someone mentioned Bethesda having made the first 2 games - not the case, it was that lovely Black Isle/Interplay combo responsible for a bunch of other awesome isometric RPGs. I think that's why a few people are cautiously reserving judgement and keeping a hold on their hype, because a part of what made the previous 2 games great was the writing for them, which no amount of clever developing and technology can cover. Fingers crossed though.

i don't care whether its 1st person, isometric, or whatever. as long as it has the same setting, the same sense of humor, and still features blowing out the midsections out of my enemies, i will get it

Fallout 2 was a classic :D I don't think any game can top that moment when you redecorate the entire town brown

I think Fallout 3 should go the route of something like KOTOR with third person view, turn-based/real time combat. I really, really, cannot stand isometric view.

Why's everyone working themselves up into a frenzy about one piece of art? It doesn't tell us anything about the game itself, other than that they've realised Fallout's 50's style. Or they've just copied the concept art of the original games. One of the two. The atmosphere of the original game was tied in heavily with the perspective. You just can't generate the same atmosphere with a third-person or first-person view. I'm not saying an atmosphere can't be generated with those views, but I am saying it won't be Fallout. If Fallout 3 isn't an isometric turn-based game it'll prove to me that Bethesda bought the license, not out of love for the series, but because they think it's a cash cow. The view and the gameplay style were heavy contributors to what made Fallout great, without them Bethesda may as well have created their own Post-Apocalyptic I.P. and left Fallout open for a developer who actually wanted to make a sequel in the mold of the original games. Needless to say, if that does happen I wouldn't be best pleased.
