I'm preloading. Steam is easier to buy from than the store and you get it the second it comes out. Its much better than installing, updating, ect like I had to do with the boxed HL2.

Boxed is that little bit more cash for a disc and folding piece of plastic that I don't really need. Preload FTW. If I really miss it I can always make and print my own, or wait until someone makes one. Considering the likely size of the game, I may as well wait until all the episodes are out and squeeze them on a single disc.

edit: also, it looks like the UK retailers are holding the game until the 2nd of June, so provided there isn't major Steam problems, there will be people who've completed the damned thing before I've even got a hold of it if I went for retail.

Today is American Today, which is in about 5 to 8 Hours (10 if we count Hawaii :P). I think Valve goes by PST which is 8 hours behind GMT.

Anyway, I see nothing cool in showing off the box - the artwork is usually very "teenage", the screenshots on the back are old and small - unless it is something like Falcon 4.0 or Microsoft Flight Simulator with 300+ page instruction manuals ;)

You can only download it. You can play it when it's released on the 1st of june. Of course if you want to play it, you'll have to pay first.

You can’t play the preload. The purpose of preloading is that you (if you buy it on Steam) don’t have to download the entire game when it’s released, on the 1st of June.

1. it's a bastardisation of the narrative
2. Games are a long term purchase for me - I'll never pay for 4 hours of gaming entertainment, I pay for hundreds if not thousands (BF2, HL2, Operation Flashpoint, Deus Ex etc.). Episode 1 doesnt deliver.

I might consider all 4 if they come in a reasonably priced box set
