View Full Version : Tomb Raider taking a lesson from Prince of Persia

To be frank, I never understood how breasts were supposed to make a video game better, but hey, that's besides the point.

So here I'm writing an all important paper for one of my classes and I'm browsing IGN as I come across a couple new Tomb Raider movies. I was never a big fan of that series, but hey, breasts are breasts.

So I watch the New Moves movie (bottom right: http://media.pc.ign.com/media/739/739585/vids_1.html. And I need some conformation. All her moves seem to be a direct ripoff from Prince of Persia, which I've played to death (all three parts). I don't mean only the concept of the moves and jump puzzles, but even the animation is so close its scary. Even the icicle puzzle is a direct ripoff from Sands of Time. And if you have been playing the Price of Persia series to death, you'll notice other jump puzzles that are exactly the same.

I'm writing this for no other reason than I don't want to write my assignment, but it still strikes me funny when people rip off ideas without even trying to add a little bit of their own tweaks.

I've tried a few demos for Tomb Raider and never liked it myself . . . but I watched that video . . .

Wow, that had Prince of Persia written all over it! All we're missing is wall-running (or are we?). The way the ledges are done - then the iceicles, and then pules & jumping off the walls. There are other ways you could implement acrobatic gameplay than Prince of Persia style. The acrobatic stuf would probably be qutie appealing, if they did it in a new unique way. This just just a direct rip-off, it's sad.

even if it ripped off from every single good game out there, Tomb raider would never be a good game...that series needed to die after the 3rd one.

Tomb Raider were great games, except Angel Of Darkness which was quite dull.

how does it rip off? All the stuff in the new Tombraider game is the same as the old ones (with tweaks) which came before Prince of Persia...

Tomb Raider was actually a good game compared to what else was on the Playstation. The rest were just rehashes while the rest of the industry had already moved on...

The Tomb Raider series is older than the Sands trilogy

If anything, the majority of the ps games were actually something new and different then what came before.

I know that Tomb Raiderseries came before, and I've played them, and I know that the it was nowhere near the style of Prince of Persia.

Tombraider was a great game....for its time. Back then, it was one of the best PC games ive played...but i dont understand why they keep on adding games to the series..cant they just let go? Its a great game...but the time has come and gone, just let it go! Its not really "fun" gameplay in it anymore...

Tombraider is still on top of my shelves as one of the best games ive played in my life.

I've got really nostalgic memories of 2 'cause it was one of the first PC games I ever played properly. I quite liked them to be honest.
And I really want this game to be good, I honestly do. But I'm not holding my breath.

No you are not.

But I reckon that all supposed "grown-up" platformers are going to be like this. Otherwise the gameplay is going to be no better than a game of a Pixar film.

yeah couple moves are very close... I don't think PoP has a diving roll though... nor the diving into water moves Tomb Raider had from the start

PoP does have a diving roll - you hit the jump jey while moving forward. What's striking isn't nessecarly the animation, but the animation combines with the level-design features - such as the way the ledges are designed.

The original 2D Prince on Persia was *wicked hard* (to use an expression), I remember just to jump from one ledge to another proved quite a chore, at least it did when I was quite young.

Sands of Time was quite good, but they screwed up the series when they attempted to make the game more "adult" orientated and turned the main character into a badass. Sands of Time had a nice art style and was quirky, the sequels ruined that.

Tomb Raider 1 & 2 were pretty good also, gamers wince when you even mention the Tomb Raider franchise now, but I think people forget how good the first game was given how many times the license has been whored since.
