New information regarding Sony's PlayStation 3 plans, which could include the pricing, launch date and initial software line-up of the console, is set to be announced in Tokyo tomorrow at a specially convened Sony conference.

Sony today confirmed that the conference, which has been widely rumoured to be the venue for new PS3 announcements since last week, will take place at 3pm local time (6am GMT) in Tokyo tomorrow, and will be open to media and analysts as well as to Sony's publishing partners.

finally and it better be damn good sony.

if you're going to make a post about how this wasn't what you wanted to say, i'll give you a warning that i'm going to reply to you with a comment which goes something like this: you're a loser and you don't matter. :P

Yeah, between this and the GDC next week, we should have lots of great gaming info on the PS3 and the Rev. What a time to be a gamer! The competition is really going to push everyone to work a lot harder on making high-quality titles for their respective machines because this generation seems to be wide open right now!

I really just want a date/price so I can rush over to EBGames and plunk down my 20% or whatever to guarantee myself a system from the get-go.:)

I would really like to see some actual games for either system too of course. :E

Its Official : PS3 launching worldwide November 2006
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6145972.html

IGN :
- Sony will unleash one million units per month with a total of six million units in 2006 alone.

- Sony today announced that not only is the PlayStation 3 to be 100% backwards compatible, but all legacy titles played on the system will be displayed at high-definition resolutions. The Xbox 360 currently does the same thing and the result on that end is much sharper image quality for older games.

- PS3 to use Blu-ray exclusively - no games DVD. Of course, it'll still play PS2 and movies on DVD, but all PS3 releases will be on Blu-ray.

- PlayStation 3 will require the hard drive peripheral. In total, it will be 60GB big, be completely upgradeable, and support Linux OS. Additionally, the peripheral will act as a home server and allow users to store various forms of media to be pulled up elsewhere.

- Final PS3 Dev Kits in June.

- the system will feature community tools including lobby matching and voice chat, commerce features that includes bootable software via the hard drive. Best of all, the "basic" service will be free of charge.

6 million units in 2006? Yeah, sure.

Also, interestingly enough, Sony seem to have finally realised they're playing catchup to MS with the hard drive and online service. Should be interesting to see how a company with no experience at all with online services as big as something live XBL will handle it.

I don't like the whole forcing BR on developers though. Sounds like an expensive waste to me considering devs won't need the extra capacity to get the games on one disc for about half the lifespan of the console. Nice to see the developers are going to get plenty of time with the finished developer kits though, should let us see whether Sony were right or not about how capable their console is.

Yea, i dont like that they forcing Blue-Ray

Update :
- At the PlayStation Business Briefing 2006, Ken Kutaragi has just added another infamous quote to his belt, this time stating that PS3 games are "live" and that the PS3 concept is "4D".

Are they really forcing all PS3 games to be blu-ray?
Couldn't a dev just release their PS3 game on DVD and the system would still play it fine?

If they've learnt anything from the PS2 security (it loads anything on a pressed disk, which is why Swap Magic and HDLoader exist) it will require xbox/360 style signing.

Everything has to go through them or it won't run.

Aye, I was also hoping to see some indication on price. My premium 360 and 2games set me back 364 sheets, but the rumour was that the PS3 was going to cost a pretty penny.

Hopefully it doesn't exceed £400, but only time will tell.

November? pretty good. Not sure if i'll get it straight away, depending on price and launch games etc, also the price of the next gen console games is crazy over here, a ps2 game is 50-60euros, an xbox360 game is 75EUROS! ffs:x

[SIZE="5"][b]60GB big, be completely upgradeable, and support Linux OS.

Thats nothing new mate. I currently have a PS2 running Linux sitting next to me. Complete with hard drive. Only difference is that the PS3 will come with a hard drive rather than having to buy a Linux kit.

You'll still have to use a specific version of Linux (Like the PS2) and you'll probably have to pay for it too. (Like the PS2.)

All of these details sound terrific to me, but I really want to see games!!!

I am thinking that they'll show an actual game or two running on PS3 hardware at the GDC to show off what the devs have been doing with it, but who knows? Here's hoping they do...May is too far away right now! :)

The price will most likely be revealed near the launch of the console. I would estimate it'll land on $399 at best, any lesser than I doubt. We'll see though.

E32006 will be the bomb. :)

Lets see... :dork:

November, December. OK thats 2 months.

If its releasing in November and they plan on unleashing one million units per month with a total of SIX million units in 2006 alone.

Using this really neat thing called mathmatics, I was able to uncover the fact that there is no way to ship more than 2 million units in 2006.

Does Sony use a special "Sony Callender" granting 4 extra months in 2006?

possible delays

"Toshiaki Nishimura, analyst for Yasuda Asset Management Co., said the delay is likely to hurt game revenue for Sony, but the announcement wasn't a big surprise for the market, which had anticipated a delay. Speculation about a possible delay had been growing in the last few months.

But further delays that could force Sony to miss Christmas entirely would be detrimental, he said.

In a research note, Merrill Lynch analyst Hitoshi Kuriyama said Sony "still has a number of obstacles to surmount before it can achieve a simultaneous global launch of PS3 in November. We will need to keep close tabs on whether any further delays emerge because postponing the launch will worsen the company's competitive position."

Can you link me to a site or sites that state the dev cost of different consoles over the years. Also what percentage or amount in royalties do the different companies take per game. It would be cool to know if that changed how it was and how it will be.
And the thirs question is about the intergration of the eyetoy, any word on that.

Yeah but if you want to actually make a game for the PS2 your going to have to buy a PS2 Dev Kit. A Linux Kit wont have any examples or give all the functions and etc.. gameing wise for the PS2. Thats what Console Dev Kits are, they are tools and examples, tutorials, and etc.. geared completely toward the creation of games. A Linux Dev Kit would be geared toward applications.

Really that suprises me..the Linux Dev Kits are just as documented as the Dev Kit for making games. Did Sony make the Linux Dev Kit and are the costs near the same?
I'd be certain the API's would be EXTREMELY different.
