what race will you play first?
here's a guide

I havent decided yet, there's just so many things to facor in as each have their strengths ..then there's class...

imperial - then i might either be somekind of "good" knight or copy Garret and be a thief.

I am gonna go for a dark elf assasin first off. Never really did that in morrowind because fighters kicked too much arse. Hopefully this time around it will be more than worth it.

Dark Elves appeal to me. It would just be cool being some kind of mysterious ranger. The only problem is that Dark Elves are pretty much outcasts.

imperial class .

08-03-2006, 05:43 AM
The idea of rangers, northern barbarians, lone woodsmen, and the "noble savage" have always appealed to me. For that reason the Nords are going to be my race of choice for my primary character. Second after them would come the wood elves.
My favored class I will probably have to decide later once I know more about the game mechanics, but will probably be a combination warrior wearing light/medium armor and utilizing ranged weapons and some stealth. I will name the custom class "ranger".

Does your race affect which class you can choose?
I like the idea of being an inept Breton. After reading the IGN handson I was intrigued that luck was a stat in Oblivion. I'd like my guy to be born to a magic background, but pretty rubbish at it, and extremely lucky. His magic failings will be compensated for a little by small small weapons/armour training. Any stats that improve the chance of hiding, running away, bluffing/charming, would be good. A stumbling fool with a dagger - think Presto from Dungeons and Dragons :)

Dark Elf.
THE Dark Elf? ;)
I'm going to start as my morrowind character - The Archer/thief Wood-Elf.
Don't like close range combat, and prefer to pick my foes off at range where I can calculate the best possible approach to winning. I just loved seeing loads of daedric enemies coming towards me with battleaxes, and I'd jump up to a high ledge and just take my time shooting arrows into their faces.
EDIT: Probably going to go for something unique to me and be Orc next, then Imperial.

Nope! It doesn't affect what class you can choose! Elder scrolls games are great in the sense you can be any class, with any skills. You can be a battle mage with heavy armor... you just might not be able to do both at the same time. You can do exactly what you want to... and I applaud you on creating a character with preplanned 'flaws'.

Race does not effect the class no, but doesn't it affect the stats however?
Also, sure you can be a battle mage with heavy armor, however, the heavy armor adds a large penalty to your spells,
So I'd rather be a NAKED battle mage with ultra powerful spells that kill enemies with one hit <3

It affects the states I think. Certain classes have better predispositions, at least in morrowind.

That's what I asked on the previous page, Malfunction :)
It seems that you can pick any class you want, regardless of race (although some races will be superior in certain areas). According to some previews you can also create your own custom classes from scratch. Oblivion looks to offer us all we want when it comes to character customisation.

I believe it's possible to play as a Daedra , unless this is no longer true? I remember hearing that a year ago when they came out with the Daedra race "oblivion" mod for Morrowind.
Personally, I always play a customized Redguard paladin/ranger type of character at the start of every new Elder Scrolls... and I've been doing that since Arena was released.

In morrowind, the Nord looked pretty cool with the tattoos, and the argonian looked pretty sick, but I tried them all and the Redguard's racial trait "adrenaline" put them in a category by themselves.
It was MUCH more useful than the other traits. You basically become a nasty quick killing machine for 60 seconds if I remember correctly, and after you use it, and annihalate everyone, you can just command your character to sleep to reset the 24 hour timer for that ability, there-by giving you an always on-tap mega ass-kicking session for ill situations.
I had no trouble maxing out all the Redguards stats by training in many things. Very well balanced and well rounded.
The orc was really good for melee as well they didn't miss very much. 9/10 hits at 100 damage per hit is a hell of a lot more damage per second or DPS than 6/10 hits at 95 damage. So ya, the orcs were great, but their racial trait - although it was awesome, it had a penalty that could accidentaly kill yourself with if i remember correctly.

Yea you can do quests in the mages guild even if you are a fighter, but I think after a few quests, you need to be a certain skill with magic to proceed any further with the mages guild quests.
Best thing to do is take all the quests you can get from all the guild masters, once you find them.

There are the Oblivion racestats guys.
Each race (male or female) has a total of 320 attribute points.
Thanks goes out to FatonMontana on the GameSpot forums for translating a german article on hte game into a nice Exel document for the race stats.

Oblivion, but I won't trust anything 100% til the game is out..
I mean, according to that list Orcs are weaker in strenght than Nords and Redguards, wtf is up with that?
Was it that way in Morrowind? I can't remember..
If that list is the accurate one, I hope someone can make a realism mod..

Why should orcs be really strong? Most of them are scronny. Your thinking of Ogres...

True, I must be thinking of Ogres.
By the way, guys, I have new info on where the info is from, apparently the Prima Strategy guide has been released early in Germany, and that's where the stats are from.
So these ARE final.
