Lost, help me

I have always wanted to play half-life 2 but when I finally get it I don't have a clue what to do. I've installed the game and tried to register to be able to use it. But when I go to the site it directs to it stops loading 2/3 of the way through and doesn't do a thing. I'm at a loss. Sorry if this is a dafft question but I really need to play. Thanks.

You Register through Steam.

Thanks for telling me that. But now when I try to create a steam account it says "This operation cannot be completed when in steam is in offline mode". How do I change it to online mode?

You should look in your options somewhere, because I think you've accidentally set Steam to always start in Offline Mode.
