Weapons

US Army

M1 Garand

The M1 Garand is the standard weapon of US Army Riflemen. It is a Semi-Automatic weapon; it has 8 rounds per clip with the US Rifleman carrying 11 clips total. Due to the characteristics of the Garand reloading mid-clip is not recommended during action. A new clip is only to be inserted once the current clip runs dry and is ‘pinged’ out of the breach. Being a Semi-Automatic the rate of fire is higher than would be expected of a rifle and with the use of Iron Sights it can be very accurate

M1918 Trench Knife

The venerable Trench Knife. A nice little weapon if used in the right circumstances, ideally a sneak attack from behind your opponent. When attacking like this, a one hit kill if often the result. When attacking normally the brass knuckles on the knife are used to strike the opponent. The Trench Knife is issue to all Allied Riflemen, Support, MG’s, Snipers and Rocketeers and provides a speed boost when carried.

M1A1 Thompson

The M1A1 Thompson is the standard Sub-Machine Gun for the US Assault soldier. It has average performance across the board (recoil, damage, accuracy, rate of fire.) This makes it a very useful weapon for many aspects of Day of Defeat gameplay. Careful use of the trigger can allow single shots to be fired, bursts or when the need arises depressing the trigger and unleashing the full power of the weapon. It comes with 7 clips at 30 rounds each. The secondary fire with the Thompson is a punch with the right fist dealing similar damage to the Knife.

Colt M1911A1

The Colt M1911A1 is the basic pistol in use with the US Army in Day of Defeat firing .45 rounds. It is in use with the US Assault, Sniper and MG classes as a back up hand-gun. Due to the small calibre bullet fired by this weapon little damage is inflicted, however with a decent rate of fire and low recoil, an experienced user can inflict a good deal of damage to their opponent. The downsides of this weapon are that it has a short range with very poor accuracy. It also lacks a secondary fire mode.

Mk11A1 Fragmentation Grenade

The Mk11A1 Fragmentation Grenade is the standard frag’ grenade issue to the US Army in Day of Defeat. Assault Infantry receive one of these while Support Infantry receive two as standard. It operates on the standard method of pulling out the pin and throwing in the direction of the enemy. The Mk11A1 operates on a variable time fuse, so upon landing near an enemy they may have time to flee the proximity of the hazardous fragments released upon detonation. A very useful weapon for displacing entrenched enemy positions.

M18 Smoke Grenade

With the M18 Smoke Grenade the Assault Infantry class for the US Army has a highly efficient and effective tool to provide a wide range of benefits. The Smoke Grenade is a tool for providing a wall of smoke that is very difficult to see through, this has the advantage of providing cover for unit movement; be it an advance or a retreat. It can also be used as a diversion drawing enemy fire towards it and away from the real threat. Smoke is only released from the grenade once it has come to a complete stop.

M1918A2 Browning Automatic Rifle

The M1918A2 Browning Automatic Rifle is a lighter; cut down version of the original Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) used in World War One and is now issued to all members of the Support Infantry of the US Army. It comes with 12 clips of 20 rounds each and is fired in fully-automatic mode. It packs a strong punch at a long range. However it has high levels of recoil and, when in a standing position accuracy is very poor, though these issues are nullified by going prone. There is no secondary fire for this weapon.

Springfield M1903A4

The Springfield M1903A4 is the main weapon for the US Army Sniper. It is a standard Springfield M1903 with a Sniper Scope attached. This addition of the Sniper Scope makes this rifle extremely accurate and gives it a very long range when the Scope is used. The Springfield Sniper inflicts massive amounts of damage when a shot is placed correctly; a head-shot is an instant death. It is a magazine fed bolt-action rifle with 5 rounds per clip, each Sniper carries 11 clips.

Browning M1919A6

The Browning M1919A6 is the US Armies .30 cal Machine Gun used by MG Infantry. While it does not require deployment, it is recommended as control of the weapon is minimal when not deployed. When the .30 cal is deployed on the bipod it has a limited field of fire, however due to the high rate of fire and damage inflicted on an effective flanking manoeuvre or use of grenades can kill the gunner. The US .30 cal does not overheat; this is because of a lower rate of fire than its German counterpart. It comes with two boxes of .30 cal rounds with 150 in each box.

M9A1 Bazooka

The US Bazooka is available to Rocket Infantry. It fires a high-explosive rocket at considerable force over a very long range making it useful for taking out distant targets such as Machine Gunners. With the high-explosive rocket it will immediately kill anyone it comes into direct contact with, and due to the blast radius inflicts massive damage on nearby units. This makes it highly effective against enemy Snipers hiding inside buildings. However the Bazooka can only be fired when in a deployed mode making the Rocketeer vulnerable when firing. Each Bazooka comes with 6 Rockets.

M1 Carbine

The M1 Carbine is the back-up weapon for US Rocket Infantry. It is a semi-automatic rifle that fires reduced-power .30 calibre bullets. It is a light-weight weapon that does not inflict as much damage as the M1 Garand used by Riflemen, though this is off-set in its role as a secondary weapon. It has low recoil and average accuracy but these positives are offset by the relatively small damage inflicted compared to other rifles.

German Army

Mauser Karabiner 98 Kurz

The Mauser Karabiner 98 Kurz or K98 is the standard issue weapon for the German Rifleman. It is highly powerful firing 7.92 x 57 mm ammunition from clips of 5 rounds, each soldier carries 13 clips. It also has a very good range normally, and when the Iron Sights are used this is further increased, as is accuracy which is very high on this weapon. However the major drawback is that it is as bolt-action rifle. This makes it very difficult to fire off several rounds at once and necessitates moving back to cover between shots.

Entrenchment Spade

The German Entrenchment Spade is the melee weapon of choice in the German Army which is used by all Riflemen, Support, MG, Sniper and Rocketeer units. This is a nice little weapon if used in the right circumstances, a sneak attack from behind your opponent will result in an immediate kill. If attacking from a different direction the Spade is swung heavily downwards onto the enemy.

Maschinenpistole 40

The Maschinenpistole 40 or MP40 is the standard Sub-Machine gun issued to all members of the German Assault Infantry. It fires 9mm bullets from a 30 round clip, each soldier carries 7 clips. Performance levels are considered average putting it on a par with the US Thompson as such making it useful in many situations while rarely excelling in any specific one. However it is best suited to close-mid range combat. The secondary fire with the MP40 Thompson is a punch with the right fist dealing similar damage to the Entrenchment Spade.

Walther P38

The Walther P38 is the pistol issued to German Assault, Sniper and MG units. As it is intended as a back-up weapon it has a poor performance inflicting little damage compared to the main weapons available. It fires a 9mm Parabellum round with 8 rounds per clip. Despite being relatively weak, with a decent rate of fire and low recoil levels an experienced user can inflict serious damage to their opponent. However it only has a short range with poor accuracy and lacks a secondary fire.

Stielhandgranate 24

The Stielhandgranate 24, commonly known as the Potato-Masher is the standard high explosive grenade issued to German Assault and Support units. Unlike the grenade used by the US Army this is a concussion rather than fragmentation grenade. This means it is considered more of an attacking weapon as it relies on blast-effect rather than the fragmentation effect to damage the enemy. A useful weapon for clearing out enclosed areas.

Stielhandgranate 24 Smoke

The Smoke version of the Germany Potato-Masher does the same role as its US cousin by expelling a cloud of smoke. This can be used for a variety of tactical situations namely as cover or a distraction to the enemy.

Sturmgewehr 44

The Sturmgewehr 44 or MP44 is the main weapon of the German Support infantry unit. Firing a 7.92 x 33 mm round this is considered on the first Assault Rifles to grace the battlefield. It is very useful at a variety of distances with a maximum range of 800 metres; it is equally useful in close-combat situations. It inflicts comparable damage to the K98 at a rate slightly slower than that of the MP40. The MP44 comes with 30 round clips and each unit is issued with 7 clips. It can be used for covering fire or during an assault and has the semi-automatic mode is the secondary fire.

Mauser Karabiner 98 Kurz Scoped

The K98 Scoped is the Sniper version of the traditional Germany K98 rifle. It is issued to all Sniper units, and apart from the Scope performs exactly the same as the standard K98. With the Scope attached it is a much more accurate weapon. Each unit is issued with 13 clips of 5 rounds each.

MG42 Machine Gun

The MG42 Machine Gun or MG42 is the main weapon issued to all Machine Gun units in the German Army. This is a weapon the needs to be deployed to be fully effective, when it is not deployed it is impossible to control. When it is deployed the MG42 has an extremely high rate of fire, however prolonged use can lead to overheating. Firing a 7.92 x 57 mm Mauser shell this is an extremely powerful weapon. However as it must be deployed for best effect it can be easily flanked. Each MG unit has 2 boxes of 250 rounds.

Panzerscreck Rocket Launcher

The Panzerscreck Rocket Launcher is the main weapon of the German armies Rocket Infantry. It fires a high-explosive rocket at a high velocity over a long range. With a high-explosive warhead it will kill anyone it comes into immediate contact with and will inflict considerable damage to anyone in the surrounding area. It is very useful against entrenched MG units or Snipers hiding inside buildings. The Panzerscreck can only be fired in a deployed mode making the user vulnerable to attack. Each Panzerscreck comes with 6 rockets.

Mauser C96

The Mauser C96 is the back up weapon issued to all German Rocket units. It is an automatic pistol rate of fire much higher than found in the Walther P38. However it is very short ranged weapon and inflicts minimal damage, however the high rate of fire makes up for these short comings. It fires a 9mm round, and is a weapon that cannot be dropped by the user.
