Day of Defeat: Source maps recreate famous battlegrounds of World War 2. Below are
the official maps released with the game.
The US Army has launched an attack on the Italian city of Anzio in a Territorial Control battle. This battle takes place in the bombed out city of Anzio which provides many areas perfect for a skilled sniper to take up residence in. It also favours tough close-combat battles with twisty streets leaving little room for manoeuvre. Another key aspect are the sewers, a skilled soldier can use them to their advantage in out flanking and positioning the enemy. The US Army starts the fight from the beach with the German Army starting inside the city itself. There are a total of five checkpoints to be controlled.
The battle for the town of Argentan is led by US forces under General Patton’s command with the aim of cutting off German troops in the Cotentin Peninsula. This map contains two main routes with several others available by travelling through the buildings of Argentan. The two main routes offer contrasting styles; one is more accessible for close-combat troops with the other favouring long rang combat from snipers and machine-gunners. The figure point of the map is a Train Yard at the top of a hill. The accessibility of the five checkpoints vary, the final American point is on easy terrain while the last German point is a higher ground and overall more complex to get to.
Taking place during Operation Avalanche this map is based on the US invasion of Italy at the port city of Salerno. The battle is fought on a hill with checkpoints scattered around the city. The key flash point in this battle takes place in the open square in the middle of map. This can be a difficult position to defend, but many multi-level buildings around the area can be used to great advantage. The German Army starts at the top of the town with a run down towards the American flags. However the Americans have the tough battle of climbing up through the town to take the flags. A tough battle lies ahead.
The wintry town of Colmar is a fitting setting for this Detonation map. The mission is simple, the American and German armies must locate the explosives located in the middle of the map. Once they have secured these they must proceed to the enemy base and blow it to hell. However both sides must be on guard to protect their assets. With darkness reigning supreme a careful soldier can turn the tide of the battle if they use cover well.
The town of Donner represents a key point in the Allied push towards Belgium. The town is crucial with several key road links present; if the US Army can win this battle then they can push their Armour north. Donner is an urban town that has suffered heavy war damage combining many wide streets with narrow alleys. This however means there are at least two routes to an objective for both sides, this makes flanking manoeuvres very effective when successful. The main street in Donner is the focus point of the map with a wrecked tank and one of the five checkpoints on the map.
The US Army has advanced in Northern France and have come across the small French town of Flashville. Several platoons are sent into the town to assess the situation. What awaits them is a strong group of German troops who will battle valiantly for this town. Based around a single main through road and a key central flag this is a tough battle. Several tall buildings offer high quality sniper positions while fallen rubble and sandbag walls offer perfect positioning for machine gunners. Each side must always be aware of two checkpoints based in the fields just outside the town which can offer great flanking positions.
The German Army has launched a counter-attack in the Italian town of Jagd. This is a must win fight for the German Army so as to reclaim their foothold in Italy. For the Germans to win this crucial battle they will have to destroy three Allied targets. The targets are the Anti-Air gun, a Half-Track and an M4 Sherman tank. Each target requires two pieces of explosive to destroy it. The America Army must defend these targets until the time limit for this map ends to be victorious. However when a target is destroyed the limit is increased. This promotes attacking play from the German Army and the Americans to keep up the pressure where they can.
The frozen town of Kalt bears witness to one of the bloodiest fights during the Battle of the Bulge. The frozen landscape has resulted in the river running through the town to become iced over allowing movement across it. The key point in the battle at Kalt is the bridge over the river, home to a key checkpoint. This is an exposed position which is often subjected to heavy grenade barrages when being taken. The open streets favour close combat though several buildings give snipers good cover. Critically the sewers allow speedy access to the rear positions and checkpoints.
