Weapons

At the heart of every terrorist vs. counter-terrorist scenario, you wouldn't have a great deal of fun unless you've got a nice array of weapons for you to proverbially "frag the crap" out of each other. Counter-Strike: Source certainly a good combination of pistols, rifles and grenades for you to play with.

Melee Weapons

  Knife

You won't often get to use the knife effectively unless it's in the correct situation. That situation of course being, where you have the opportunity to stab someone in the back which makes for a near perfect and damn satisfying weapon.

Primary Attack: Slash.
Secondary Attack: Stab.

Pistols

Heckler & Koch USP .45ACP Tactical

This is the default pistol for the Counter-Terrorists and it certainly packs quite a punch. With a semi-automatic action, the weapon fires as fast as you can click. Though it packs quite a bit of power, still try to aim for the chest and head to dispose of your enemy quicker. Feeling stealthy? Attach the silencer to muffle your shots.

Primary Attack:
Shoot.
Secondary Attack: Attach/detach silencer.

  Glock 18 Select Fire

The Glock 18 is only a 9mm calibre weapon, so it's shots aren't very powerful. The gun has a good level of accuracy though, and a few well placed shots should bring down your enemy. However, the gun has a burst fire option so this can sometimes help a lot in dispatching your enemy with three shot bursts though this mode does fire slower.

Primary Attack:
Shoot.
Secondary Attack: Change fire mode. Burst/Semi-auto.

  IMI Desert Eagle .50 AE

One of the most powerful handguns in the world, everybody loves the Desert Eagle and it's certainly our favourite. It has a small magazine size so you quite often get caught short, but with the power it packs, this usually makes up for it. It fires a bit slower than the Glock and USP but, again, considering the power of this gun, you won't be complaining.

Primary Attack:
Shoot.
Secondary Attack: N/A.

  SIG Sauer P228

This little pistol isn't used very often, and to be honest, there isn't really much reason to. It's a simple little pistol just slightly more powerful than the Glock with a similar rate of fire. It's certainly accurate and if you place your shots correctly, it does the job - as would any other gun.

Primary Attack: Shoot.
Secondary Attack: N/A.

  Fabrique Nationale Fiveseven
Counter-Terrorist Only

This little gun, though a little powerless, will definitely fire as fast as you can click and is definitely the most accurate pistol available in your arsenal. This gun is probably a slightly better alternative to the USP at times, but the USP will tend to be more effective.

Primary Attack:
Shoot.
Secondary Attack: N/A.

  Dual Beretta 96G Elites
Terrorist Only

These are a lot of fun and if you learn how to use them properly they will stand you well, until of course you reload. With there being two guns, it takes twice as long to reload and this usually catches you out unless you're able to run to some cover. At $1000, you'd be better off getting a sub-machine gun for your money.

Primary Attack:
Shoot.
Secondary Attack: N/A.

Shotguns

  Benelli M3 Super90

The M3 shotgun is a fantastic weapon for close range combat, and at times, it isn't too bad at longer ranges either. One or two well placed close range shots will finish off your enemy, but at longer ranges it will probably take about five accurate shots to bring someone down, and that isn't always possible if that someone has a rifle. It also has a slow rate of fire.

Primary Attack:
Shoot.
Secondary Attack: N/A.

  Heckler & Koch / Benelli XM1014

In terms of power and range, this shotgun is almost identical to the M3. It has the added advantage however of being a fully automatic shotgun so no time is wasted pumping the shotgun. One thing that lets it down is that you'll easily empty the weapon of its seven shell capacity and the reload times, with having to load one shell at a time, can be lengthy and deadly too.

Primary Attack:
Shoot.
Secondary Attack: N/A.

Sub-Machine Guns

  Heckler & Koch MP5 Navy

The most popular sub-machine gun in the game and actually in the world. The MP5 is a great weapon due to its great accuracy, good rate of fire and easy operation. Even with good accuracy, the weapon can still sometimes run away with itself, so ensure to use smaller bursts to compensate the recoil.

Primary Attack: Shoot.
Secondary Attack: N/A.

  Steyr Tactical Machine Pistol (TMP)
Counter-Terrorist Only

The TMP has a great rate of fire and relatively good accuracy, but unfortunately it doesn't have much power about it. You normally need literally a whole magazine to bring someone down with it if they're wearing armour. This weapon is probably best avoided, unless you can't afford an MP5 and a pistol won't do the job.

Primary Attack:
Shoot
Secondary Attack: N/A.

  IMI MAC-10
Terrorist Only

This is the terrorist equivalent of the TMP and is good as more of a budget weapon. The MAC-10 tends to be a lot more effective than the TMP due to it being a .45 calibre but it does have less accuracy and a lower rate of fire. Again, buy an MP5 if you can afford it.

Primary Attack:
Shoot.
Secondary Attack: N/A.

  Heckler & Koch UMP .45

With good accuracy, and a nice little .45 calibre kick, the UMP can be an effective weapon. Some things that let it down are the smaller capacity 25-round magazine and a slow rate of fire. Pitting yourself up against an opponent with an MP5, it's hard to tell who will perish first as they probably balance each other out.

Primary Attack:
Shoot.
Secondary Attack: N/A.

  Fabrique Nationale FN-P90

One of the oddest looking weapons in the game, the P90 is a very effective weapon in the right hands. It has a large magazine clip of 50 rounds, and it packs a punch. Unfortunately, you'll have a hard time being accurate with this one if you're the spray and pray type but whether or not you'll use this gun is down to your own personal preferences.

Primary Attack:
Shoot.
Secondary Attack: N/A.

Assault Rifles

  FAMAS
Counter-Terrorist Only

For the Counter-Terrorist, a much cheaper alternative to the much preferred Colt M4A1. With a similar rate of fire, it is a bit under-powered compared to the M4A1 and it isn't quite as accurate. The gun also has a smaller 25-round magazine so be sure not to get caught short when reloading. The gun also has a burst fire mode.

Primary Attack:
Shoot.
Secondary Attack: Change fire mode. Burst/Semi-auto.

  IMI Galil
Terrorist Only

Though the AK-47 is usually preferred over the Galil, you'd usually choose this one for its slightly cheaper price tag. It has some plus points over the AK-47 as it has a higher rate of fire, an extra five rounds in the clip and it's a bit more accurate. However, it's not as powerful as the AK-47 and not as accurate at long ranges.

Primary Attack:
Shoot
Secondary Attack: N/A.

  Colt M4A1 Carbine
Counter-Terrorist Only

When you've got the money and you're not a sniper, you're likely to buy this. The M4A1 has a superb rate of fire, reasonable accuracy and is likely to do a lot of damage. Also, to nicely accompany your USP, it has a silencer on it for those stealthier approaches.

Primary Attack:
Shoot.
Secondary Attack: Attach/Detach silencer.

  AK-47
Terrorist Only

The AK-47 is the favourite weapon of most terrorists. It has decent power but you'll have to compensate for the fact that it can be quite inaccurate at times. However, the AK-47 is almost surgical for single shot bursts at long distance and is often to be thanked for a nice headshot. You'll find it's one of the noisier weapons in the game.

Primary Attack:
Shoot.
Secondary Attack: N/A.

  Steyr Aug
Counter-Terrorist only

The Aug is a rifle that probably packs a little bit more power than the M4A1 and also a little bit more accuracy, making it more of a longer distance weapon than the M4A1 which is more of a close combat rifle. The Aug also comes equipped with a scope which will aid you in getting those all important shots to the head.

Primary Attack:
Shoot.
Secondary Attack: Zoom in/zoom out.

  SIG SG-552 Commando
Terrorist Only

The SG-552 is always a great choice if you have the money. With a higher rate of fire, better accuracy and a scope, you'd be silly not to want to use this over the AK-47. The only downside is its pretty hefty price tag which would mean you'll usually go for the AK-47.

Primary Attack:
Shoot.
Secondary Attack: Zoome in/zoom out.

  Steyr Scout

The Steyr Scout used to be a bit of a joke to people who played Counter-Strike. To some it still is, but it has become a rather effective weapon. It has just the right balance of power now to make sure it's not too difficult to kill someone and not too easy. While not as strong as the AWM, it certainly does a good job within three well placed shots.

Primary Attack:
Shoot
Secondary Attack: Zoom in/zoom out.

  A.I. Arctic Warfare Magnum

In the hands of a good sniper, you have next to no chance of getting away alive from this weapon. It's just like any other sniper rifle, but, unless you're lucky enough to be shot in the foot, one shot from this bad boy will kill you. The weapon is incredibly inaccurate while moving and has a slow rate of fire. With this one you need to get your tent out and set the fire burning.

Primary Attack:
Shoot.
Secondary Attack: Zoom in/zoom out.

  SIG SG-550 Sniper Rifle
Counter-Terrorist only

In Counter-Strike: Source, the SG-550 and the G3-SG-1 have both become a lot more effective. With their semi-automatic/automatic action you'll easily knock down opponents with a few well placed shots. Like any other weapon, try to aim for the head to secure the quicker kills.

Primary Attack: Shoot.
Secondary Attack: Zoom in/zoom out.

  Heckler & Koch G3/SG-1
Terrorist Only

Almost identical to the SG-550, the G3/SG-1 is another great weapon. It differs to the SG-550 only because it is slightly better power but less magazine capacity. It all balances out quite nicely and certainly a good equivalent to the Counter-Terrorist's SG-550.

Primary Attack:
Shoot.
Secondary Attack: Zoom in/zoom out

Machine Guns

  Fabrique Nationale M249 PARA

Since the upgrade to the Source engine, the M249 has been blessed with a much increased rate of fire. The gun is now a lot more effective but still doesn't give you an unfair advantage when using it. Well, no more unfair than you'd expect when using a machine gun that holds 100 rounds to a magazine box, is probably the fastest weapon in the game and packs some power, that is.

Primary Attack:
Shoot.
Secondary Attack: N/A.

Equipment

  C4 Plastic Explosive
Terrorist Only

This is one of the most important items in the game on some maps. On the de maps, it is the main objective to plant this at predefined points in the level. It takes approximately five seconds to plant and once it's done, guard it with your life - but still try to get out before the timer runs out. As fun as the ragdoll physics are, you'll want to stay alive for the next round.

Primary Attack:
Plant the bomb
Secondary Attack: N/A.

  Kevlar Vest

The Kevlar Vest is usually something you'd buy on the first round or if you can't quite afford the vest and helmet combination. It provides cover to your torso and a little bit of damage resistance but bare in mind, if you were to get a shot to the head it's likely to be an instant death, so be careful! Buying one of these on the first round usually rules out buying a better pistol, but is sometimes the right choice to make.

  Kevlar Vest & Helmet

This is certainly a true life-line and it is strongly recommended that you buy this every round as it will give you some resistance against damage to the chest and to the head. Though it doesn't make you invincible, it certainly does delay the inevitable.

  High Explosive Frag Grenade

While probably not as powerful as it should be, the HE grenade can certainly still be an effective tool to kill that out of reach opponent or group of opponents. Unfortunately you can only carry one at a time, but precision will compensate for that. Make sure you're not in the way when it goes off or your own carcass is liable to be flying across the level.

Primary Attack:
Pull pin. Release to throw.
Secondary Attack: N/A.

  Flashbang Grenade

You'll see this grenade used quite a lot and the reason is it's a very effective tactical tool. In a lot of maps you'll find that simply running into a corridor or around a corner will get you quickly killed, but a well placed flashbang will give you the advantage for a few seconds while the enemy are blinded. Be careful not to flash your team mates! You can carry two of these at a time.

Primary Attack:
Pull pin. Release to throw.
Secondary Attack: N/A.

  Smoke Grenade

Used for reasons similar to the flashbang, the smoke grenade should give you some much needed cover. Although you can only carry one at a time, a good tactic is to throw a smoke grenade where there's already one going off. It will double the effectiveness of it and ensure that no one on the other side of the smoke can see you. Obviously it works both ways, you can't see them either!

Primary Attack:
Pull pin. Release to throw.
Secondary Attack: N/A.

  Defuse Kit
Counter-Terrorist Only

With one of these little kits, it makes it possible for a Counter-Terrorist to defuse the bomb in approximately 10 seconds as opposed to the normal 20. You must buy it yourself each round, or you can pick it up from one of your dead team mates, of course.

  Night-vision Goggles

When your mother used to say eating carrots make you see in the dark, well, she was a liar. What you really need is a pair of these goggles. They'll light up the surrounding area in a glow of green, while also keeping you concealed to anyone not fortunate enough to be wearing any. Truly enlightening stuff eh?
