New Medic Feature Being Worked On
Posted @ 9:52 AM, January 1 2008, By: DigiQ8 In Team Fortress 2

It looks like that Valve are working on more than just new achievements for Team Fortress 2. a member from Steam's Official Forums, received a reply from Robin Walker saying that Valve are working on a new feature for medics, "that'll add a set of interesting choices".
We're working on a large new feature that'll add a set of interesting choices for Medics to make about their tactics, so in the future we expect the Medic role to broaden over time.

Team Fortress 2 Update
Posted @ 10:50 PM, December 31 2007, By: DigiQ8 In Team Fortress 2

Valve just released a new Team Fortress 2 update, fixing the sniper quick-switch exploit and the obscure rendering setting that would allow players to make cloaked spies appear fully black. Now for the change list:
  • Fixed "CUtlLinkedList overflow!" crash
  • Added player position data to server logging of events (player_death, player_builtobject, teamplay_flag_event, object_destroyed, teamplay_point_captured, teamplay_capture_blocked)
  • Improved mapcycle handling to ensure it always loads new mapcycles when the mapcyclefile convar is changed
  • Fixed sniper quick-switch exploit allowing them to avoid zoom/unzoom times
  • Fixed an exploit allowing players to spawn into the enemy territory at the start of a round
  • Fixed syringegun projectiles sometimes pushing players high up into the air, allowing them to reach bad map locations
  • Removed an obscure rendering setting that would allow players to make cloaked spies appear fully black
Restart Steam to get the new update. Oh and Happy New Year!

NEXT-GEN’S Best 30 Games of 2007
Posted @ 11:32 AM, December 18 2007, By: DigiQ8 In HL2: Episode 1, HL2: Episode 2, Half-Life 2, Portal, Team Fortress 2

The Orange Box got the fourth place in Next-gen's best 30 games of 2007, says that it's one of the best deals in gaming history.
We’re kind of glad that Valve and EA decided to put all of these great games in one package, not only because it’s likely the best deal in gaming right now, but also so we have an excuse to wedge all of these top-tier games into one slot. Everyone knows that 2004’s Half-Life 2 is one of the best examples of the FPS genre, and 2006’s Episode One was icing on the cake. New, though, is the raucous Team Fortress 2, with its comically gory style and gameplay that expertly adheres to the playing style of virtually anyone. And then there’s Portal, a mind-bending game that took the portal mechanics used in 2006’s Prey to entirely new levels. And Half-Life 2: Episode Two is the best entry into the saga yet. We’re not sure how this package could possibly be any better outside of including a free functional Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device with every purchase.
You can find the whole list on next-gen.biz.
Team Fortress 2 – New Maps, 360 Patch and more
Posted @ 8:30 AM, December 12 2007, By: Evo In Team Fortress 2

Various sources, these sources being CVG and Shacknews are reporting that there are new Team Fortress 2 maps, a 360 patch and video creating tools all in the works!

Confirmation regarding maps and the patch came from Valve's Kerry Davis via forum user Shamrock. Valve submitted an Xbox 360 patch--addressing exploits and bugs, bandwidth usage, and stats reporting--to Microsoft certification today, and expects the certification process to take 10-14 days, completing before Christmas.

As far as new in-production maps, Davis gave no time frame. They will be released individually on PC, and in a single pack on Xbox 360. It is unknown whether that pack will be free; Microsoft has been reported as being discouraging towards developers releasing free game content through Xbox Live.

In a separate email sent to Shacker Trips, Valve's Robin Walker noted that the company plans to add to its official SDK the proprietary tools it uses to create the videos highlighting TF2 classes such as the Heavy, Engineer, Soldier, and Demoman. He said the company uses Softimage XSI and Autodesk Maya as well as its own tools.

All very interesting news I must say. Though the lack of mention of anything appearing for the recently released PS3 version is intriguing!

Valve’s Creative Process
Posted @ 4:19 AM, December 3 2007, By: -smash- In Team Fortress 2

An in-depth look at Valve's workflow and creation process of the Team Fortress 2 maps and its characters has been published over at CGSociety. Featured are some new concept art drawings and screenshots from earlier visions of the game. Oh yeah, and all that fandangled text to read...
We tried out a variety of implementations before settling on our final one. Once we had it on paper, our artists worked closely with our engineers to invest in technology that could deliver the desired visuals. The shading techniques were designed to quickly convey geometric information using rim highlights as well as variation in luminance and hue, so that game players are consistently able to visually 'read' the scene and identify other players in a variety of lighting conditions.
It would do you a lot of good to see it. It's a very fascinating read. If you want to check it out, follow your mouse!
