Steam Cloud Coming This Week
Posted @ 1:17 PM, November 3 2008, By: DigiQ8 In News, Steam

Valve announced Steam Cloud a set of services for Steam that stores application data online and allows user experiences to be consistent from any PC, is coming out this week. This free steam extension will ship with the Left 4 Dead demo coming on Thursday for you who pre-ordered and Nov 11th for you who still having doubts for the game.
the information stored and accessible through the Steam Cloud includes keyboard, mouse, and gamepad configurations, as well as multiplayer settings such as spraypaint images.

The Steam Cloud will "just work," meaning any user changes to their game options will propagate to the Cloud by default. Upon logging into Steam from another PC, these settings will be brought down from the Cloud and automatically leveraged by the game. Any configuration changes on this second machine are then synced to the Cloud for future sessions.
Valve will add Cloud support to its back catalog of Steam games. And it will be available to all publishers and developers using Steam, free of charge.

Update:
HL2net: Could Steam Cloud store saved games online?

Doug Lombardi: "Not initially, but it is planned for a future update."

A new beta for the Steam Client is now available. The new beta has many new additions like the support of shopping cart, recommendations & purchasing directly on the web. Check below for the full list:
  • Added shopping cart, recommendations & purchasing directly on the web
  • Added backend support for Left 4 Dead matchmaking
  • Added backend support for Steam Cloud
  • Fixed steam re-applying command line parameters (like -install) across 'change user' or 'change language' restarts
  • Fixed steam refreshing the games list, refreshing the server browser if open, and reloading server brower filter settings
  • Fixed the friends list placeholder for large clans disappearing when "view online friends only" was turned on
  • Fixed games list not always refreshing after receiving license updates
  • Fixed embedded IE control not scrolling or responding to key presses correctly
  • Improved IE control perf
And here is a little more detail on the Store related changes:
We've done a pretty big overhaul to the store and our purchasing process so that you can now purchase online over the web without even using the Steam client, and when you purchase in the client the entire payment/checkout path is in the web control, instead of in a client wizard dialog.

We've also added shopping carts, online account creation, account history, and recommendations to the store.

If you were planning to buy a game, please try it with the new system and give us feedback on how the purchase path works for you.

If you'd like to checkout the new store outside of the client you can use this URL to opt into the new store while in a web browser:

http://store.steampowered.com/?webbasedpurchasing=1 Also, if you are outside the US you'll notice we haven't translated all the new strings yet and they show in English. We should be able to update with translated strings soon (before the beta is set live for everyone).
To access the Beta, go to File -> Settings, and on the Account tab will be a drop down. Select Steam Client Candidate, and then allow Steam to restart itself. Have fun testing :)

Steam Community: Official Groups
Posted @ 5:27 PM, October 17 2008, By: Hectic Glenn In Steam

With the recent update to Steam Community, we've seen a much nicer interface with a couple nice additions including the blotter and improved group management. Some of the sharp eyed individuals may have seen the addition of 'Official Groups' which up to this point have only been used for a few smaller titles. Tonight official groups have been unlocked for:
  • Episode 2
  • Counter Strike: Source
  • Portal
  • Team Fortress 2
  • Left 4 Dead
You can now join these new groups and join the chat rooms for the specific games, I'm certain they'll start getting busier in the next few days. They should be a great tool for large community discussions and organising of multiplayer games. (Or you could just enjoy the company of the Halflife2.net group). More to be added in the near future, see here for Official Groups.

Left 4 Dead Pre-Orders 60% Up on Orange Box
Posted @ 7:04 AM, October 10 2008, By: Evo In Left 4 Dead, News, Steam

According to this Edge Online report pre-orders of Valve's upcoming survival-horror-co-operative-shooter-extravaganza are 60% higher than those for the Orange Box. Valve managing director Gabe Newell has this to say regarding the pre-orders:
"People had really strong reactions to Left 4 Dead when we started showing it. Our pre-orders are running 60 percent ahead of Orange Box. This in combination with the fact that it is a new IP made us think that an extensive marketing program made a lot of sense."
Valve have launched a massive promotional campaign for the game costing $10 million and covering television, online, print and outdoor advertising. The promotional posters for the game (as seen below) feature the logo of the game, the disfigured hand that is now synonymous with the game.

These advertisements will run hand in hand with a massive television campaign with 30-second adverts appearing on a wide variety of US TV networks from November 9th to the 28th. The ads will be mixing humour and horror, and I assume with bear classic Valve stylings. The Xbox 360 and PC demo of the game is slated to be released in early November and will feature 1-4 player gameplay from the game's "No Mercy" campaign. Newell is also positive regarding the future success of the game.
"Well, Left 4 Dead has a long way to go to beat Half-Life and Counter-Strike, but our fans' excitement when they play the game has certainly infected us. It will be a top five title for the year, but beyond that we'll have to see how big it gets."
Pre-orders up 60% on the Orange Box, a $10 million advertising campaign? I am sure that Left 4 Dead will be a hugely successful game.
