Lombardi – PC to overtake Consoles
Posted @ 8:41 PM, March 6 2008, By: Evo In Steam, Steam Games

In a very frank interview with Gamasutra Valve's Doug Lombardi takes the time to talk about the success of AudioSurf, continued indie game support, Steamworks and on how he views the PC market as overtaking the console market.

Recalls Lombardi, "I can remember this story coming around in the mid '90s... and then 3D accelerator came out, and Carmack released that patch for GL Quake, and everybody shut up, because all of a sudden PlayStation looked like crap. There's a big shift about to come in the post-GPU space... all of a sudden PC will leapfrog what's going on on the consoles, in many other ways besides graphics."

In fact, continues Lombardi, the question mark might be floating squarely in the console's future, as their prices continue climbing and more post-purchase purchases are becoming necessary. "How much longer will that story still have credibility?" He posits.

"Somebody go back and look at next-gen console install base numbers since launch time, and compare it to PSone and PS2. I wouldn't be surprised at all if we saw these guys stuttering out at 25,000 -- nobody's going to get to 100 million, which we saw from Sony on the last 2 [console generations]. I don't think anybody's even thinking of this."
This is a very in-depth interview and it presents a fantastic insight into how Doug views the PC gaming market and the future of the console industry. Check it out here.
Audiosurf Best-Selling Game In February
Posted @ 4:15 PM, March 5 2008, By: DigiQ8 In Steam Games

Outselling The Orange Box, Counter-Strike, and hundreds of other great games available via Steam, the month of February also delivered numerous awards and top reviews to Audiosurf's solo author, Dylan Fitterer.
Audiosurf is a music-adapting puzzle racer where you use your own music to create your own experience. The shape, the speed, and the mood of each ride is determined by the song you choose. You earn points for clustering together blocks of the same color on the highway, and compete with others on the internet for the high score on your favorite songs.
Audiosurf is available now for just $9.95 via Steam, in my opinion it's a must-buy game.

Clear Sky

The prequel to S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, Clear Sky, will be released on Steam, the only digital dowload distribution platform to carry the game, simultaneously with traditional retail channels. S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky brings the players one year prior to the events of the original S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game in 2011. A group of stalkers has, for the first time, reached the very heart of the Zone-Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant-and brings about a cataclysm on the brink of a catastrophe. Through a rich narrative and gripping combat action, players uncover new challenges and insights in the Exclusion Zone. A new version of the game engine, X-Ray 1.5, powers superior graphical details and realistic and non-scripted combat AI.
Steam has introduced S.T.A.L.K.E.R. to many thousands of new fans all over the world. We chose to deliver the digital version of the game exclusively on Steam because of its proven success not only as the leading global digital distribution platform for games, but because it allows us to directly reach its integrated and active community of gamers.
Said GSC Game World's CEO Sergiy Grygorovych.

More information about the game is available on Clear Sky's Steam page.

Okay, okay, enough of me throwing some innovation into this news post, lets get down to the hard facts; these are that over the next few days any Orange Box related product is going to save you money!

Following is the information straight from Doug's keyboard

"Still Alive" just $0.89. A digital copy of The Orange Box soundtrack is available now from Amazon.com for just $7.99, a two dollar savings off the regular price. And MP3's of the individual songs, including both versions of Portal's "Still Alive", may be purchased for just $0.89 per song from Amazon.com.

If you still haven't played the games inside The Orange Box, retailers around the world -- including GameUK and Best Buy USA -- are running incredible specials on the PC, Playstation 3, and Xbox 360 versions of The Orange Box.
