No Portal This Year – Lombardi
Posted @ 4:49 AM, April 26 2008, By: Evo In Portal

Portal was released last year and received great critical reviews and many gamers fell in love with the game, the Weighted Companion Cube became an overnight success, as did the game. Earlier this year it was let slip that Portal 2 was a certainty. Now Doug Lombardi has informed Eurogamer that we shouldn't expect to see any more Portal this year.

"In typical Valve tradition, it won't be Portal with different colours," said Lombardi, dressed as a companion cube. "I think that when you hit something like that, you have two choices: you can quickly replicate it and stick it out there - do the opportunistic thing and cash in on it; or you can do the crazy thing like we did after Half-Life was so successful and go off and try and say, 'Okay, that was revolutionary, so its successor has to be equally as revolutionary.'

"That's the spirit I think we're approaching it in," he added. "You won't see a new Portal at retail this Christmas because of that. That's the trade off. People want more, but we don't want to give them more of the same right away because that would just be boring."

Gamasutra Interviews Kim Swift and Erik Wolpaw
Posted @ 3:32 PM, March 25 2008, By: DigiQ8 In Portal

Gamasutra had a chance to speak to Kim Swift and Erik Wolpaw, the lead designers behind Valve's award-winning Portal and now they have a massive 8 pages interview on their website.
It is very strange to say, but it had more emotional impact than some other things that really try to be epic and sweeping, and narratives that are all about revenge and you have to kill someone because they killed your father.

EW: Yeah. It's always more satisfying for me, personally, when I feel like I can sort of understand the villain in a book or movie and empathize with them a bit. It makes their villainy a lot more tragic.
This is a must read interview, don't miss it!.

Games From The Orange Box Flying Solo
Posted @ 12:30 PM, March 13 2008, By: Hectic Glenn In HL2: Episode 2, Portal, Team Fortress 2

As already reported, from the 9th-11th April we will be seeing the games which made the Orange Box the success it was, released as individual retail games. The pricing scheme will be as follows
  • Portal - $19.99 USD
  • Team Fortress 2 - $29.99 USD
  • Half-life 2 Episode Pack (inc both episodes plus HL2 Deathmatch) - $29.99 USD
It's also important to point out the last in the list there still supports the 'gift' features, so if you already own one of those episodes or deathmatch you may gift it to a friend. Also all three packages include support for Steamworks achievements, automatic updates and more, and do not require Half-Life 2 to play. Also a reminder, to buy the Orange Box with all these titles together the current price on Steam is $49.95 USD (so a good saving if you want more than 1 of the above packages). Doug Lombardi says...
With the flexibility of having different pricing and packaging options via Steam, we were able to test the market viability of the individual products. The results show an overwhelming demand for these stand-alone offerings as well as The Orange Box. This gives us tremendous confidence as we bring gamers more ways to get these titles at retail

GDC 08: A Portal Post-Mortem
Posted @ 4:13 AM, February 25 2008, By: -smash- In Portal

GDC 2008 has wrapped up on it's final day today, giving developers more time to polish up their new products for this years E3Expo. From Valve, nothing much was said or heard from them, other than Kim Swift's supposed "slip up" (we know how Valve thinks) on a future sequel to Portal. Packed wall to wall, one of GDC's ballrooms held the highest attended panel discussions hosted by Valve's very own Kim Swift and Erik Wolpaw. A discussion topic behind the design and writing aspects of the game were the focus of, what gamers call a "fresh title," their carefully crafted game, Portal.
Through the carefully measured use of GLaDOS's dialog, the team was able to guide players into becoming attached to the Weighted Companion Cube. Of course, this attachment only really existed so that it could be exploited when GLaDOS demands that the player "euthanize" the cube by throwing it into an incinerator, but it also helped players solve the puzzle while preserving and even bolstering the story.
Gamespy was just one of many attendees joining the panel. You can read their impressions and summary of the topic over at their website here. More cake, please.

Lombardi Interview – Portal and Orange Box 2?
Posted @ 7:01 AM, February 8 2008, By: Munro In HL2: Episode 3, Left 4 Dead, News, Portal

Eurogamer have sat down with Valve marketing director Doug Lombardi to talk about things. Things like Portal, and whether we'll see an Orange Box 2. Things that you can read in the interview here.
Eurogamer: You obviously can't do The Orange Box 2...

Doug Lombardi: [Laughs]

Eurogamer: Presumably you'll just release Episode Three as a single standalone product this time?

Doug Lombardi: We'll see, we'll see. The idea of doing The Orange Box 2 seems kind of contrived. It happened the first time because the three [games] were on a collision course and a bunch of us were sitting around going "this could be a nightmare", and somebody kicked around the idea of putting them together.
Orange Box – Separated
Posted @ 4:07 PM, February 1 2008, By: Evo In HL2: Episode 2, Portal, Team Fortress 2

In a recent conference call to investors, EA announced plans to bring the three parts of the Orange Box to retail separately on the PC before the end of March. This means that any of you who don't own Portal already have no more excuses not to! Although no prices have been set, expect them to follow Steam rates. Portal $19.95, TF2 $29.95 and HL2 Ep2 $29.95.

Doug also informs us that new information regarding Gordon's adventures are months away.
