Chet Faliszek on Valve and Left 4 Dead
Posted @ 3:21 PM, August 19 2009, By: Evo In HL2: Episode 2, Half-Life 2, Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, Portal, Steam, Team Fortress 2
Valve's Chet Faliszek has opened up about Valve and Left 4 Dead and more to Jim Rossignol in Jim's Ragdoll Metaphysics column on Offworld. Before you start asking, no Chet doesn't have any Episode 3 news. However he does have some other interesting things to say: The Orange Box was weird. It reminded me of 8-bit era game packs. Three Games In One! That seems really unusual in the contemporary market. Did it seem unusual now? Did it seem totally logical to create a three-game pack like that? It still seems weird, now that I think about it.
Faliszek: Well, at the start Portal wasn't mature enough for us to be sure that we should do it like that, and Team Fortress 2 has had plenty of false starts. It kind of formed as we developed the games. There was no "this is how we do it" from the get-go, instead we're a company that can experiment and yeah, it's a throw-back to earlier eras, those ways of doing things. We experiment, and it pays off. You can find this in-depth interview here.

Portal on the iPhone?
Posted @ 8:00 AM, July 16 2009, By: DigiQ8 In Portal
Some guy from the internet has built an iPhone version of Valve's Portal using Unity. Now we don't know if this is real or not, though it does have all the symptoms of an iPhone game (clunky controls, low fps etc..).
Why don't you check the video here, and tell us what you think?

Portal Gun IRL
Posted @ 8:31 PM, January 21 2009, By: -smash- In Portal
You know, I've often wondered why we haven't seen a legitimate replica of the ASHPD up until this point. Over at Flickr a user posted some images of, get this, a portal gun that her boyfriend made as part of her AS Test Subject costume.
My boyfriend made this ASHPD for me for my upcoming Aperture Science Test Subject costume. It lights up both blue and orange along the tube and in the barrel, and the prongs light up red as long as the gun is on.
It looks like it could be an actual, functioning Portal Gun. This is definitely one of the best Half-Life saga replicas created in a long time!

Portal: Prelude Released
Posted @ 6:03 AM, October 9 2008, By: DigiQ8 In Portal
It's finally here, one of the most hyped mods is now released exclusively on Fileplanet (soon to be released everywhere). Planet Half-Life have the first review for the mod, you can read it here.
The bottom line of it all is that Portal: Prelude isn’t just a map pack, and in my eyes it can’t even be called a straight off mod. It’s a game, and it’s free. Hours upon hours of rich, challenging gameplay, beautifully crafted maps, custom content with professional-sounding dialog can all be found if you scroll down the page to the download link. I’ve played Portal map packs and I’ve played single-player Source mods, but Portal: Prelude takes the cake. Yeah, I threw in the pun, but stop wasting time, you’ll need all the time you can get to beat the game!
You can find another preview by ModDB, right here.
Download the mod now from Fileplanet. (more mirrors coming soon)

Portal Prelude Interview
Posted @ 10:02 AM, September 20 2008, By: Evo In Mods, Portal
You want to see a meaty interview with Nicholas from Portal Prelude? Well look no further than here on halflife2.net where I talked to Nicholas about the making of Prelude and a little bit about the story behind it. Here is a little taste of what to expect: Chris - How do you feel fans of Portal are going to react to seeing other NPCs in the game?
Our testers were not that annoyed. Because there's no GlaDOS, and because it's in the past. We needed to find something a bit more "realistic" and "familiar" to talk with the player. The former human employees of Aperture Science were a really good idea, because basically, we never really see them during the test. You hear them, and you know they're watching you, just like if it was GlaDOS. Check out the whole thing right here.

Portal: Prelude
Posted @ 6:03 PM, September 15 2008, By: DigiQ8 In Portal
When I saw the title Portal: Prelude, I thought this going to be another mappack for Portal...but it isn't, as its name states it, it's an unofficial prequel to the game Portal. It's not just a mappack, it's a whole new story.
Portal: Prelude, the upcoming unofficial prequel to the game Portal. Its story revolves around the pre-GlaDOS epoch, even before she was plugged in. At this time, test subjects were monitored by real Aperture Science employees, whose work was tedious, lengthy and repetitive. This is why they decided to build a great artificial intelligence that could both replace them in these difficult tasks, and also take responsibility for many other tasks within the complex and compete with Black Mesa's superiority.
All employees of the Aperture Science complex are now eagerly awaiting GlaDOS. Maybe even a little too eagerly, as the upcoming events will tell...
This game is totally free and set to be released somewhere around the end of September. It offers a bit more gameplay hours than the original Portal, with 8 chapters, 48 challenges, 6 advanced maps, a brand new storyline and more than 400 lines of speech with english and french subtitles.
Watch the game trailer here (highly recommended). And click here for more info.

No Portal: Still Alive on PSN
Posted @ 6:17 AM, July 31 2008, By: DigiQ8 In Portal
Valve's Doug Lombardi has confirmed that the new downloadable content Portal: Still Alive will not be available on the PlayStation Network, and it's exclusive to Xbox Live Arcade.
"I'd call that today's rumor," a Valve spokesperson told CVG when quizzed on the subject. Today's rumour, but tomorrow's news, we said. "You're smart to ask. But no," Valve told us.
Portal: Still Alive is coming later this year on XBLA.

Mike Patton on Valve Voice Acting
Posted @ 5:57 AM, July 25 2008, By: Evo In Left 4 Dead, Portal
Most of you will know Mike Patton as being a great singer for Faith No More, however did you know he was also involved in Portal and will be again involved in Left 4 Dead? Well you do now. In this interview with The A.V. Club Patton reveals some interesting stuff about his work with games in general as well as the Valve connection. AVC: You also had a brief appearance in Portal, the Valve game, and there's talk about you perhaps appearing in their game Left 4 Dead.
MP: I think what they did is they took some material that I'd already recorded for Portal—maybe it was vice versa. Basically that came out of the same session of work. Check out the interview here.

More Portal 2 Details
Posted @ 9:26 PM, June 10 2008, By: DigiQ8 In Portal
Kotaku are back again with more details on Portal 2, they got even more info from the rumored casting call reported yesterday. Prequel? Based on the dialogue below it's not. Beware SPOILERS BELOW:
The script samples we saw for the Cave Johnson role indicate that the Aperture CEO and "eccentric dead billionaire" is, well, already dead, living on in simulated computer form. He tells an unnamed rookie test subject via loudspeaker that "As of this mornin' yer old buddy Cave has been resurrected inside of a computer. And I never felt better!" acting as this entry's GlaDOS—possibly that prototypical GlaDOS, as theorized earlier—encouraging the player to continue the testing while waxing philosophical about the afterlife.
"I been thinkin," the script reads, "Heck, suspended as I am in this inky purgatorium, I got nothin' to do but think. What if them engineers didn't do me no favors pourin' me into a computer? What if they denied me my final reward?"
No telling if this internal conflict is the catalyst for Johnson "[losing] his grip on humanity as the story progresses" but if things go wonderfully wrong as they did in the first, it would certainly make for a compelling narrative.
I have to say WOW!. Remember though this is still a rumor.

Casting Call Reveals Portal 2 Details?
Posted @ 12:23 AM, June 10 2008, By: DigiQ8 In Portal
Kotaku got their hands on what may be the first info about Portal 2, supposedly the site "Breakdown Express" a private site for the industry have a casting call from Valve for an actor to play " Cave Johnson" " a self-made billionaire who's learned to trust his gut and doesn't sweat the details, is a big picture thinker." The casting call continues on to describe him.". You can read the casting call below:
This casting call suggest that Portal 2 may be a prequel (kinda make sense from story-telling point of view).

Portal 2 – “Won’t be more of the same”
Posted @ 2:29 AM, May 1 2008, By: DigiQ8 In Portal
Valve declared in an interview with CVG that Portal 2 " will definitely not just be Portal with different coloured textures" and it will be as innovative as the original and not just a quick cash in.
"People gave it a lot of kudos for being so innovative so, in Valve's tradition, when we hit something, we're not just going to pump out more and cash in on the success of the first one."
Look out for the full interview later this week on CVG.com
