Valve’s Creative Process
Posted @ 4:19 AM, December 3 2007, By: -smash- In Team Fortress 2
An in-depth look at Valve's workflow and creation process of the Team Fortress 2 maps and its characters has been published over at CGSociety. Featured are some new concept art drawings and screenshots from earlier visions of the game. Oh yeah, and all that fandangled text to read... We tried out a variety of implementations before settling on our final one. Once we had it on paper, our artists worked closely with our engineers to invest in technology that could deliver the desired visuals. The shading techniques were designed to quickly convey geometric information using rim highlights as well as variation in luminance and hue, so that game players are consistently able to visually 'read' the scene and identify other players in a variety of lighting conditions. It would do you a lot of good to see it. It's a very fascinating read. If you want to check it out, follow your mouse!

Kotaku’s Impressions of PS3 Orange Box
Posted @ 3:59 PM, November 29 2007, By: DigiQ8 In HL2: Episode 2
Kotaku has posted their Impressions for the PS3 version of The Orange Box, it's a less harsh preview than 1Up's. It looks like the game do have some issues but it still plays quite well.
Now that all that frame rate and lighting nonsense is out of the way, how does The Orange Box play? Quite well, actually. As a big fan of the Half-Life series, I'm willing to forgive the odd quibble, but wouldn't want anything to interfere with my experience. Episode Two, so far, has been great fun, exploring a handful of new mechanics and adding interesting set pieces to the series. Using the SIXAXIS for control works quite well, even if I'm not totally in tune with the default controller mapping. Normally, I play my Valve games on the PC, as I have already done with Half-Life 2: Episode One, Portal and Team Fortress 2, but I found the console version to be just as enjoyable.
You can read the the first preview here. expect the second volume tomorrow.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun – Interview Gabe Newell
Posted @ 10:03 AM, November 21 2007, By: Evo In Steam, Steam Games
The ever brilliant Rock, Paper, Shotgun have a in-depth, detailed, high-quality interview with the one and only, Gabe Newell!
RPS: Do you think of Valve as a philanthropic company?
Gabe: I don't usually think of it that way. We think of ourselves as very much grounded in the community, and as part of the community. We've got our role; everyone has their role, whether it be the press or people who build levels, and so forth. We feel like we're in there as part of the community, rather than benevolently standing above it.
RPS: That must be deliberate though, because you could so easily position yourself in a benevolent role, over and above the community?
Gabe: Yes, but I think that's dangerous. We all got our start as fans. There's a tremendous power in bringing that perspective into game design: wanting to make something that really is worth people's time and money. It also gives you a sense of how few opportunities you have - we all know people in the industry where you can look at them and say "well you did this great thing here and then wasted the opportunity in subsequent years." They just threw something together and that's two or three years out of their career that they're not going to get back.
We're also trying to make sure that we make the most of the incredible good fortune that we've had, and that it benefits everyone who has supported us.
So go and check out the rest of this interview right here.
