Community Pays to Fly Gabe to Australia
Posted @ 11:30 AM, October 1 2009, By: Hectic Glenn In Left 4 Dead
Gabe will soon be on his way down under after an entertaining email exchange with mod maker Joe W-A. The fund-raising began after Joe heard that Newell had recently flown the leaders of a gaming community group boycotting Valve's upcoming Left 4 Dead 2 to Valve's Seattle, WA headquarters. Joe emailed to ask if Newell would fly him to Seattle so Joe could show him his mod. Gabe playfully replied that he wouldn't fly Joe to Seattle because he was "boycotting" Joe's mod. The Australian-based game designer appealed to the game community for $3,000-the funds necessary to fly Newell halfway around the world-and raised the money in less than 48 hours. "The power of the gaming community and their ability to rally around a cause - be it serious or fun in nature - is amazing. In 2003, the community helped the FBI and European law enforcement officials find the people who stole the Half-Life 2 source code. This year, the community is putting me on a plane to the other side of the world to meet Joe W-A and see his MOD. It's going to be a fun trip." Erik Johnson will be accompanying Gabe to stop him getting eaten by spiders during their trip next week. All news on the trip will be posted on the L4D blog. Check out the blog site used to raise the funds for this project!

Counter Strike 2 ‘Never Really Got off the Ground’
Posted @ 5:46 PM, September 28 2009, By: Evo In Counter-Strike
Counter Strike creator Minh Le has revealed to IGN that when he joined Valve he worked on several Counter Strike titles, including Counter Strike 2. However development "never really got off the ground, the project ended up being put on the shelf."Minh is now working on a game called Tactical Intervention which looks to be the type of game Minh wanted Counter Strike to eventually become. He told IGN: "I enjoyed Counter-Strike, but I wanted to have my own game. I was never able to put in all the cool features I wanted because the people who played Counter-Strike would [complain] about all the changes. They liked the game as it is." To find out more about Tactical Intervention and what Minh Le thinks about the classic game head over here.

Hey, Do You Wanna Kill Teletubbies?
Posted @ 11:43 PM, September 23 2009, By: DigiQ8 In Left 4 Dead
Ever sat down with your nephew while he's watching this show about big, round, brightly colored, annoying creatures known as The Teletubbies? Don't you wanna kill them? and empty your M16 rifle on their heads? and throw 10 Molotovs and watch them burn slowly to their painful yet satisfying death?
Well, it's your chance to do so thanks to this mod made by flameknight7 that changes all the common infected to Teletubbies. The complete package comes with a sound mod and you hear the zombies saying "Eh oh" and at the end of a round, listen to the music. You can watch them die here or start killing them yourself here.
Let the Teletubby slaughtering begin.

Team Fortress 2 Blog Update: Guard Dog
Posted @ 8:20 PM, September 21 2009, By: Hectic Glenn In Team Fortress 2
It all started yesterday on the Steampowered forums where a member created a fake TF2 update introducing the 10th class, a guard dog. This hilarious fake update page shows a BLU & RED dog with a mobile sentry gun on it's back, as well as abilities such as being a jarate dispenser. Check it out here, woof woof. Team Fortress fans have fell in love with the guard dog idea and now Valve have commended the idea on the TF2 blog with a thumbs up from Saxton Hale himself. G'Day, Inventor; Thank you for your submission of #1308 - "Guard Dog". First off, let me commend you for your ingenuity with regards to the item you invented. Your application is pending. Watch your mailbox because we will evaluate your invention and get back to you. I look forward to working with you in the future. Sincerely, Saxton Hale.

Gordon Freeman Needs You!
Posted @ 11:42 AM, September 21 2009, By: Ennui In Half-Life 2, News
When Gamespot's current Greatest Video Game Hero contest was first mentioned on our community forums, I ignored it. Gordon Freeman was matched against Snake of the Metal Gear Solid series and trailing by tens of thousands of votes, a slump that at the time seemed overwhelming to me. No way could the illustrious Gordon Freeman compete against Snake and his console fanboy hordes, especially not when already lost in his dust as the unfortunate mouth of Pac-Man in the vote's pie chart.
I was wrong. Today I stumbled across the competition again after checking an email in the news inbox about it, and was stunned by what I found. Despite being down by a huge amount, right now Gordon Freeman has 49.9% of the vote, trailing his adversary Snake by only a touch over 100 votes, with nearly 80,000 votes total. I couldn't let it lie - while a news post on Halflife2.net isn't close to sufficient to make up a 10,000 vote deficit, a couple hundred is nothing, and as we here on the staff are honor bound to serve the One Free Man, I had no choice but to post it.
So head on over to the Gordon vs Snake voting page, and let's help our hero get to the next round of competition.

Korsakovia Mod Released
Posted @ 6:57 PM, September 20 2009, By: Hectic Glenn In Mods
Korsakovia is a mod by The Chinese Room team, who were also responsible for the well acclaimed mod Dear Esther. Just like DE, Korsakovia is a frightening survival horror mod and is about delusion, paranoia and the end of the world. It is based around the simple question - what happens if you turn off the visual representation of agents, the normal cues players use to predict behaviour and motive? Around this experiment, Korsakovia mixes the abstract story-driven experience of Dear Esther with more traditional gameplay. The result is a survival horror FPS that will trap you in the splintering fragments of a destroyed mind. Resolution Magazine has published their thoughts after an early playtest, but you can download the mod here.
