Last 2 Unknown Left 4 Dead 2 Campaign Posters Leaked?
Posted @ 3:29 PM, October 10 2009, By: Hectic Glenn In Left 4 Dead 2

From the news we've heard on Left 4 Dead 2 since it was announced, Valve have told us that it will ship with 5 campaigns (all of which will support versus). We saw Parish to begin with, then Swamp Fever and most recently Dark Carnival. The remaining 2 have been unknown (including the opening campaign) but it seems today the last 2 posters have been leaked on a Taiwan website. They are:
  • Dead Center - A mall campaign with the tagline - Prices aren't the Only things getting Slashed
  • Hard Rain - Industrial setting around a refinery with the tagline - Come Hell and High Water
Hard Rain is likely to utilise the new AI director's ability to control weather, whereas Dead Center is set to fill that much anticipated mall setting players have demanded.
The campaigns are linked with a more developed storyline this time round, so can we work out the order in which they will play in? See the posters below.

CSS SCI FI 3: Hardwired Released
Posted @ 5:16 AM, October 9 2009, By: Hectic Glenn In Mods

This huge and impressive mod will be on general release from 11th October, however you can get it on early from PlanetPhillip.com today!
CSS SCI FI 3: Hardwired is a single-player modification for Half-Life 2. Waking up to find himself an augmented clone of Gordon Freeman, the player must fight time-travelling Combine forces and other enemies across 42 unique and replayable missions.

Missions are set in 18 retail and 24 custom Counter-Strike: Source maps, which are installed intact to the player's CS:S game folder. The mod edits the entity data for each map as it is loaded, adding and modifying entities to create a seamless single-player experience. The maps remain unchanged and are fully playable in Counter-Strike: Source. Maps have been contributed by established designers, including Bluestrike, Schuzak and d00ds.com. Combat locations range from a snow-covered country church to a dense pine forest to a sun-baked tropical island.

Players enter each map through the mission hub and can choose to play each one at a time or all in 3 linked campaigns. Each mission features a series of goals, such as to rescue hostages or destroy targets, which must be completed to move on to the next map or return to the hub. There are multiple approaches to each goal, and in each map the behaviour and armament of enemies and the distribution of resources are randomly determined within defined parameters. Thus, no two plays are the same, making CSS SCI FI a truly replayable single-player experience.
Download mirrors can be found on PlanetPhillip, who have rated this a must play. Check out some media below.

Left 4 Dead 2 Classified Down Under
Posted @ 1:19 AM, October 8 2009, By: DigiQ8 In Left 4 Dead 2

Capture2

Left 4 Dead 2 has been given an MA 15+ rating after it was refused classification last month.

according to the classification board report, the modified version removes amounts of gore from gameplay, it no longer contains depictions of decapitations, dismemberment, wound detail, or piles of bodies lying about the environment. And is now able to be accommodated within the MA15+ classification.

Valve are also appealing the original classification decision and still hope to release Left 4 Dead 2 in Australia in its original. The appeal ruling is expected to be made on October 22.
Left 4 Dead 2 New Mode Revealed – Scavenge
Posted @ 12:29 AM, October 8 2009, By: DigiQ8 In Left 4 Dead 2

Last night Valve revealed the new Left 4 Dead 2 mode at a press event in San Francisco.
Screenshot1 Screenshot

Scavenge - essentially combines Left 4 Dead's Versus and Survival modes. It has four survivors fighting to find 16 gas cans across the game map to use them to fill up a generator. While the opposing team (The Infected) will try their best to stop them.
This new mode (designed to be shorter than the traditional competitive) has four survivors fighting to find 16 gas cans across the game map. Using the cans, the goal is to fill up a generator to win the match. Split up over six rounds (three per team), each starts with 120 seconds; each gas can will add an additional 20 seconds to the overall time. If time runs out, yet one survivor is still holding a gas can, the game will go into overtime until the generator is up and running or an infected knocks it from their hands.

On the opposing team will be the Infected, who are doing everything they can to feast on human flesh and (of course) stop the survivors from restarting the generator. Not only can infected knock the gas cans from the hands of the survivors, but special infected like the "The Spitter" can light the cans on fire with its phlegm. Survivors must also watch their fire -- one stray bullet can set the can on fire as well.
Valve are planning to ship the "Scavenge" with 6 maps each, reconfigured maps from the game's campaign.

Update: G4TV have the first hands on preview of the new mode and they liked it!
My take? The mode is really fun, emphasis on really, and very different from anything we've seen so far. Each game last 3 rounds of each side taking turns at survivor and infected. Good communication is key and the fast game play will sate appetites that don't have the attention span for proper versus matches.

Valve’s Jason Holtman on Steam
Posted @ 3:17 PM, October 7 2009, By: Evo In News

Valve's business development boss Jason Holtman has talked with MCV about Steam and digital distribution in general. He explains why we don't see sales figures for Steam games and much more. For those of you who read what Randy Pitchford said about Steam this is an interesting quote:

What is your view on the competition? Digital is growing more than ever, and now publishers like Electronic Arts are opening things like the EA Store for downloads. Doesn’t that create a level of conflict?

They should open their own stores. The way we approach digital distribution is this: We think that the people making PC games should go to as many channels as they can. And reach as many people as they can. If a publisher or developer wants to build something and reach people Steam cannot, then they should – it’s good for digital. Everyone in the games industry wants to get their game out to as many possible people as they can – and if they want to reach 20 million people, then they also come to Steam as well as working with everybody else.

Why not read the whole thing here.
Gearbox’s Randy Pitchford on Valve and Steam
Posted @ 3:12 PM, October 7 2009, By: Evo In Steam

Gearbox's Randy Pitchford has talked at length with Maximum PC about Borderlands, piracy and Steam. His comments about Steam, well they make for very interesting reading. Here is what he has to say about it:

MPC: The download services, like Steam, are helping make it easier to buy games though, right?

RP: I’ll tell you what. Steam helps. As a guy in this industry though, I don’t trust Valve.

MPC: Because they’re competitors?

RP: Right.

MPC: You guys have worked with them a lot!

RP: I know. And I, personally, trust Valve. But I’m just saying, honestly, I think a lot of the industry doesn’t.

MPC: So you think Valve should spin off Steam?

RP: They should! It would be much better if Steam was its own business. There’s so much conflict of interest there that it’s horrid. It’s actually really, really dangerous for the rest of the industry to allow Valve to win.

I love Valve games, and I do business with the company. But, I’m just saying, Steam isn’t the answer. Steam helps us as customers, but it’s also a money grab, and Valve is exploiting a lot of people in a way that’s not totally fair. Valve is taking a larger share than it should for the service its providing. It’s exploiting a lot of small guys. For us big guys, we’re going to sell the units and it will be fine.

The Classification Review Board (formally the OFLC) have published a media release outlining a second bite at the cherry by Valve, to classify Left 4 Dead 2 in Australia. Originally the game was classified RC (Refused Classification) by the Classification Board on 15th September.

The Classification Review Board will meet on 22nd October 2009 to consider the application. The decision and reasons will later be published on www.classification.gov.au.
No word on any changes which may have been made to L4D2 in order for it to receive classification this time round. It seems likely there will have been a few. Thanks to Wonko for the news, see the media release here.
