Posted @ 4:53 AM, December 11 2008, By: DigiQ8 In Left 4 Dead

Over the last weeks there have been videos showing how to get access to the console in the XBox 360 version of Left 4 Dead, which gives you access to some cheats.

But fear no more 360 players Valve have released a server-side fix to deny the recently reported cheats on all dedicated Left 4 Dead Xbox 360 servers.

A title update for those playing on user-hosted servers and/or via system link will be released in the coming days.
Valve Responds on Left 4 Dead Versus Difficulty
Posted @ 10:26 AM, December 8 2008, By: DigiQ8 In Left 4 Dead

Erik Johnson has responded to the storm over Valve's decision to lock Left 4 Dead Versus difficulty at Normal. He said:
The game was built to play against other people, not fight the horde and fight other real people. Its also nearly impossible for players to know what kind of experience they are going to be getting into.
He also revealed that Valve is currently hosting around 5,000 L4D game servers that are powered by what he described as "mostly quad core CPUs in a blade setup." In other news we're still hosting one PC L4d server.
News Round Up
Posted @ 5:22 AM, December 8 2008, By: Evo In Left 4 Dead, Mods, Steam Games

It has come to my attention that a few pieces of news have managed to slip through the gaps here at halflife2.net, I am taking it upon myself to rectify that.

Mod news

There has been a massive media update for Sven Co-Op, you can find all the latest media on their web site. There are in-game shots of a whole host of new weapons, they include an electrified crowbard. I wouldn't want to get hit by that! Great to see one of the great original Half-Life mods still going strong.

Steam Games

Overgrowth is an interesting indie game I myself have been keeping my eyes on, and I was extremely pleased to read that it will be coming to Steam. This really is one of the best things about Steam, some great indie games get to be released to a wider audience. I hope these guys have some success when the game is released.

There is also a new piratey game on Steam going by the name of Buccaneer. Selling for $19.99 you can explore the Caribbean in over 50 single-player missions and compete with against up to 18 other people in the multiplayer.

In Closing

That is about it I think for now, though one last thing. If you didn't know, Mike Patton, of Faith no More and Mr Bungle fame did some voice acting in Portal and Left 4 Dead. There is a nifty interview with him right here where he touches on these topics. Also an interesting insight into the life of a video game voice actor.

Now go about your usual day-to-day business eh?
Left 4 Dead Blog Update: The Intro Movie
Posted @ 11:26 AM, December 5 2008, By: Hectic Glenn In Left 4 Dead

The Left 4 Dead blog as been updated with the process the development team went through creating the introductory opening sequence we see in the Left 4 Dead trailers and when we open the game, setting the scene on the 'No Mercy' rooftop.

They outline how it was new territory for the team since no other Valve games has a movie-like intro, and they had to go through a few drafts before getting to the well polished version which was released. Check out the blog to see the actual draft movies created and how things progressively improved.

Most notably you'll see the old character skins, no lip syncs, some awful ideas, lack of animations and a ridiculous relationship vibe between Zoey and Francis (thankfully which was cut!). Really interesting to see the changes. Left 4 Dead blog.

GamePro’s 19 Ways to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse
Posted @ 6:38 AM, December 2 2008, By: DigiQ8 In Left 4 Dead

GamePro have some tips for you survivors out there, check them out:
#19: Leading is Not Cheating

In Left 4 Dead, it doesn't matter if you're playing as or against the walking dead--leadership is essential to your survival. It's a good idea if someone takes the lead at the beginning of every round. And seeing as this is the most dangerous job in your team, you may want to leave this role to more advanced players. It's crucial for the leader to know the ins and outs of the maps in the game, including where the safehouses and checkpoints are. And most of all, leaders should act as point man and damage tank.

#18: Know Your Role

Aside from the leader, the rest of the team acts as scouts and sharpshooters. Stay close to the leader, but scout out adjacent rooms (quickly) for health, ammunition, and bombs. Don't shoot people in front of you if you are acting as the sharpshooters.

#17: Cierra la Puerta

When playing as a human, a good habit to have is closing doors behind you. Zombies can smash through them, but it will hold them off for a good amount of time.
You can find more ways to survive right here.

Left 4 Dead reviews have been overwhelmingly positive over the last week, with a score of 88% at Metacritic as of today.
G4 TV 5/5
Fast zombies? Check. Non-stop tension and intensity? Check. The quality of gameplay we expect from Valve? Check. When it comes to co-op multiplayer, Valve is consistently ahead of the curve and excellent at making games that force players to work together.
PC Gamer UK 93/100
It's got all the nail-biting high tension of a control point assault/defence of Team-Fortress 2, mixed with the tightly designed levels of Half-Life 2 and the weapons of Counter-Strike. As long as they keep introducing new missions, there's no reason why it won't be sucking on your bandwidth for years to come.
IGN UK 9.2/10
One of the finest zombie games ever made, and one of the finest co-op games ever made. The potential for everything to go so, so wrong without warning, or conversely to pull off the most spectacular escapes against all odds, means this is an online shooter you can tell your finest anecdotes about without boring everyone else to tears.
Kotaku
I'm addicted. It's rare that I enjoy a game this much from the get-go. This is a brilliant, tightly executed shooter that feels fresh and exciting.
Maximum PC 10/10
Left 4 Dead didn't just meet our high expectations for the zombie apocalypse, it exceeded them.
GamePro (Editor's Choice Award)
I can't recommend Left 4 Dead highly enough.
Valve are extremely pleased with Left 4 Dead and the positive reviews. Also Left 4 Dead's pre-order numbers surpassed those of The Orange Box, by more than 160%.

Posted @ 9:09 PM, November 21 2008, By: Hectic Glenn In Left 4 Dead, Steam Games

Tonight I can see many people from the Halflife2.net Steam community group getting their teeth into Left 4 Dead, after the official release of the retail versions. Left 4 Dead's pre-order numbers surpassed those of Valve's 2007 blockbuster, The Orange Box, by more than 160%. That is pretty incredible. Steam has also released an update for L4D tonight
  • Fixed certain files for some users from being re-downloaded when launching Left 4 Dead
Also, you can now buy Tomb Raider: Underworld on Steam, and also pre-purchase the upcoming Prince of Persia title (Getting Sands of Time for free). Lastly, as we reported a few days ago, with Grand Theft Auto IV on it's way to Steam, this is now available for pre-purchase, with GTA Vice City thrown in for free. PoP available - December 10th, GTAIV - December 3rd.
Left 4 Dead Reviews
Posted @ 9:48 PM, November 17 2008, By: AciD In Left 4 Dead

We got two new reviews up!

One review is from TeamXbox:
Gameplay 9.5
It’s so immersive and satisfying to sling lead at an infinite number of creepy, crawly zombies! It’s not particularly deep, but there are far more moments that’ll make you grin goofily and move tensely to the edge of your seat.

Grapics 8.6
Some of the visuals are fantastic, such as the zombie movement and death animations, but there’s also a lot of sloppy terrain clipping and glitchiness that hinders the overall experience a tad.

Audio 9.1
It gets repetitive (as most games like this do), but there’s fun variety in the spoken lines and the sound cues of various boss zombies are great for determining proximity and direction.

Longevity 9.3
No, it’s not a deep journey, such as Fallout 3, but what’s there will probably have players battling for quite a while in the game’s competitive multiplayer settings.

Innovation 9.4 Valve takes what could have been a run-of-the-mill shooter and injects enough freshness into it that it should stand well away from the pack. It’s a great blend of survival/horror and FPS action.

Overall 9.1
Overall Score NOT an average

Second one was made by GameSpy:
Pros:
Intense, nerve-wracking experience; co-op gets even better as you add players; innovative, entertaining multiplayer mode.

Cons:
No real narrative in place; single-player offerings pale in comparion to co-op play; no searching for dedicated servers.

Score: 4.5/5

IGN Reviews Left 4 Dead
Posted @ 2:45 PM, November 17 2008, By: DigiQ8 In Left 4 Dead

The IGN review of Left 4 Dead is now online they gave it 9.0.
There's absolutely no doubt that Left 4 Dead is one of the most social and exciting multiplayer games that we've ever played. It's almost pitch perfect in how it captures the tension and the action of a Hollywood zombie movie. This is an incredible and highly replayable multiplayer experience that's definitely worth checking out, especially if you're looking to prepare yourself for the inevitable zombie apocalypse. Just make sure you bring your friends.

Another Left 4 Dead Review
Posted @ 11:48 AM, November 17 2008, By: DigiQ8 In Left 4 Dead

Poland.us has the first online review for Left 4 Dead and they loved the game.
Valve is part of an exclusive group of developers that is able to roll out crticial and commercial hits almost without interruption. Left 4 Dead continues that legacy, offering one of the best cooperative experiences of this generation and laying the groundwork for what could be a VERY profitable franchise.
Score Breakdown:

Gameplay: 9.5 – Surprisingly frantic survival gameplay. You'll have to work as a team to get through each level, the AI Director is an omnipresent menace that ensures you'll never get tired of playing on the same maps over and over again. Versus mode is strong, exhibiting only a few flaws that make it harder to play as the Infected.

Presentation: 10 – Spectacular visual variety and use of environments. The game really exudes a sense of desperation and need to survive.

Graphics: 9.5 – Not technically mind-blowing, but artistically strong and well-optimized, as we've come to expect from Valve!

Sound: 9.5 – Awesome weapons sounds, great character sayings, great use of music.

Value: 10 – We might be playing in the same environments over and over, but we haven't realized it yet...

Final Score: 9.7 – A fine example of Survivor-horror and co-operative gameplay. Pick this up if you're a fan of shooters, zombies... or, games in general!

Left 4 Dead will be released in 12 hours on Steam.
