Left 4 Dead Update released
Posted @ 6:58 PM, March 11 2009, By: Hectic Glenn In Left 4 Dead

Loads of changes / fixes for this update. Some good, some I'm not sure about. But we will see how they play out. You can see the full list here, but the most important ones are below
  • Tank melee attack can now hit multiple Survivors in one swing
  • Fixed Tank punch being able to hit targets behind walls
  • Fixes to 'Tank parking'. The Tank will now run back and attack the Survivors if he becomes AI due to two players expiring the frustration meter
  • Fixed a case where the Tank was moving too slowly while crouching and being shot
  • The order that the teams play as Survivors is now determined by which team has the higher overall score. The winning team will play as Survivors first
  • The Smoker tongue can now target and grab victims through common infected
  • Increased the cone in which a Smoker can grab a target
  • Boomers that explode in mid-air will now hit Survivors directly below them with Bile
  • Reduced the damage that burning Hunters do to pounced victims
  • Adjusted the time at which players take over from bots to avoid 5 seconds of the bot standing idle while the player finishes connecting.
  • The scoreboard now shows the numeric value of a player's ping
  • Games in a finale are now joinable via the Friends and Steam Group games list
Interesting changes to the tank and smoker, let us know your thoughts. Steam News.

Secondly IGN have enjoyed a hands-on play test with Valve and put down their thoughts here. Its a good read, with some great information about what to expect from Survival mode specifically. Some of the key points are as follows:
  • In all of the play testing that the Valve designers have done while creating this mode, none of them have ever survived past the 10 minute mark. The best so far was about nine minutes, with a team of elite players battling like crazy to keep one another alive. IGN's experience at Valve averaged around three or four minutes a round.
  • You'll get multiples boss zombies at a time; they often saw two or three hunters or smokers leaping around the battle while the mindless horde minions were everywhere. In one battle, there was a tank, a boomer, a couple of smokers, and a hunter hitting us at the same time. It's even possible to get two tanks at the same time
  • 12 Survival levels available, 11 of which are taken and modified from the existing four campaigns
  • There is one entirely brand-new level in the DLC called Lighthouse which the designers say may be the toughest level of them all
  • You can earn bronze, silver, and gold medals if you survive long enough. Though the medal times for each map will be tailored for each map, right now the basic idea is that you need to survive for at least four minutes to get bronze, six minutes to get silver, and eight minutes to get gold.

Left 4 Dead DLC / New Game Mode and SDK Details
Posted @ 12:36 PM, February 5 2009, By: Hectic Glenn In Left 4 Dead

We've been waiting patiently for details regarding Left 4 Dead downloadable content and the support it's going to receive from Valve in the coming year. The first release will be called the L4D Survival Pack. It is due for release this spring and introduces a new multi-player game mode, called Survival, plus two complete campaigns for Versus Mode . A Critic's Choice Edition of the game is also heading to retail stores this spring, and will include access to all the content introduced in the L4D: Survival Pack.

In addition, for PC gamers and aspiring developers, the first Left 4 Dead release for the Source Software Development Kit (Source SDK) will allow the creation of custom Left 4 Dead campaigns that will be discoverable via L4D's matchmaking system. The SDK update is also due for release this spring, and is free of charge to all owners of L4D on the PC.
Since Half-Life launched in 1998, Valve has made continuous efforts to expand the offering of its products beyond what's included on the day of launch. With Half-Life and Counter-Strike, and more recently Team Fortress 2, we've learned that we're no longer making stand-alone games but creating entertainment services. With Left 4 Dead we're extending that tradition by creating additional gameplay and releasing our internal tools to aspiring developers so they may also create and distribute new Left 4 Dead experiences.
Indeed we shall Gabe. Winter is nearing its end.
Left 4 Dead Retail: 1.8 Million Sold
Posted @ 4:52 PM, February 3 2009, By: Hectic Glenn In Left 4 Dead

Electronic Arts has revealed that the retail release of Left 4 Dead on xbox 360 and PC has reached 1.8 million copies sold up till 2008. This doesn't include any purchases through Steam (being digital distribution and not figures EA has access to).

Note this also omits any data from January and February of this year. As I'm sure you can guess, Steam sales are likely to be very high too. Shacknews. (thanks to hool10 for link)

New Left 4 Dead Patch This Week
Posted @ 6:03 PM, January 12 2009, By: DigiQ8 In Left 4 Dead

Valve's Chet Faliszek confirmed in an email to a fan, that Left 4 Dead should be patched this week. This patch should fix many glitches and bugs in the game and it may add Death Toll and Dead Air in Versus mode.
Sadly Microsoft has nothing to do with the pc patch... that delay is all us. The PC and 360 will be patched independently not sure where people picked up that exploit/bug fixing was tied together. Only the DLC will be simultaneous. The problem on the PC side was a few large bugs affected other systems that we were going to rewrite on the pc so we ended up waiting to fix a whole class of bugs instead of just individual bugs. The patch should be out this week.
