Left 4 Dead 2 To Feature Bulletproof Zombies
Posted @ 3:51 AM, July 24 2009, By: DigiQ8 In Left 4 Dead 2
It seems The Parish campaign will feature another uncommon-common infected. The riot police wearing full bulletproof vests zombies.
These kevlar wearing infected can only be killed from behind, making it especially difficult if two are bearing down on your character. A quick melee hit will stun them, even knocking them down and exposing their posteriors. But as they charge you, unloading a full clip on their fronts will essentially do nothing.

Gamespy Swamp Fever Preview
Posted @ 4:07 PM, July 20 2009, By: DigiQ8 In Left 4 Dead 2
GameSpy has the first hands-on with the new Left 4 Dead 2 Swamp Fever campaign. Swamp Fever is the only campaign in L4D2 that starts out in the night, and also features new level-specific infected, they're called the Mud Men, " they are zombies who run on all fours incredibly quickly, making them hard to detect".
It sounds like such a small thing, but the addition of a level-specific common infected, referred to as "common-uncommons" internally, completely alters the way a level like Swamp or Parish plays. In Swamp the level-specific zombies are mud men: zombies who run on all fours incredibly quickly, making them hard to detect, and especially so when they're in a couple feet of water. This resulted in our team having to be hyper-vigilant when wandering through the bayou, watching the water the way that Han Solo and company did when facing the Dianoga in the Death Star trash compactor. During the not-so-quiet moments, like when we were trying to protect a teammate who'd been covered in Boomer bile, these little zombies could come out of nowhere, providing ample distraction for other infected to close the gaps on our defensive positions. The Parish campaign also featured a level-specific zombie in the form of biohazard suit infected, whose invulnerability to fire created some tough situations when we were relying on molotovs to provide safety.
Don't miss the full preview, head to Gamespy to read more and watch the new gameplay footage.

Joystiq Left 4 Dead 2 Preview
Posted @ 7:32 AM, July 14 2009, By: DigiQ8 In Left 4 Dead 2
Joystiq had the chance to get their hands on Left 4 Dead at the recent European press event in London. Like others, they played the New Orleans campaign.
As we said during E3, the game plays identically to original. There isn't even a particularly noticeable graphics upgrade, if you ignore the dismemberment improvements. Is that a bad thing? Of course not. A bad game is a bad thing. This is just a good game, made again. With new characters, levels and some new features -- such as melee weapons and special infected.
Left 4 Dead 2 will be shown and playable in ComicCon, in a couple of weeks. In the meanwhile you can read the full Joystiq preview here.

Left 4 Dead 1/2 Cross-Play Possible?
Posted @ 6:16 AM, July 8 2009, By: Evo In Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, News
In an interview with Total Video Games Valve's Doug Lombardi has revealed that they are looking at introducing cross-play between Left 4 Dead 1 and 2. One of the things that has been floating around is the idea of cross-gameplay with the original Left 4 Dead; is this likely? That's something that we're trying to work out right now, the details of it. So nothing specific to say today, but we understand that it's a very valid thing to be working on and looking at. With the MOD stuff, if you're making stuff for Left 4 Dead it will work in Left 4 Dead 2 with very minor amounts of work to bring it over. So we feel we've made good steps on that side and now we're looking at how we manage that for folks who buy the first game and sequel. You can read the whole thing here.

IGN and bit-tech Left 4 Dead 2 Hands-on
Posted @ 10:58 AM, July 7 2009, By: DigiQ8 In Left 4 Dead 2
Both IGN and bit-tech got their hands on Left 4 Dead 2 and choosing to describe their experiences, rather than rehashing the same old rants.
All in all, Left 4 Dead is looking incredibly promising. Yes, it's very much more of the same, but – from what we've seen, at least - it's been refined and revised to really ramp up the tension and exploit the formula's greatest strengths. It's still hugely engaging as a co-operative experience and, as an added bonus, Valve has pushed things a little from a visual perspective.
Read more on IGN. Chet: All we’ve shown is the Charger special infected. There are three to four new special infected, they are all playable in Versus Mode. We’ve only shown a couple of the melee weapons too, we have new things like incendiary ammo, more items besides pipe bombs and molotovs. We’re just giving a little sample out for now. Chet's interview with bit-tech can be found here.

Valve Interviews Commence Joystiq Gets Some Left 4 Dead 2 Details
Posted @ 7:52 PM, July 4 2009, By: BlueWolf72 In Left 4 Dead 2, Mods, News
There's an Interview with Doug Lombardi on Joystiq talking about a variety of topics, including PS3 support and quite a bit on Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2. The top interview questions that caught my eye were:
So first thing's first. Where's Half Life 2 Episode 3?
Doug: "Laughs. Stay tuned! No news on that today."
Onto Left 4 Dead 2 specific stuff. Will you be offering Left 4 Dead 1 levels as DLC or installable from the disc for Left 4 Dead 2?
Doug: "That's something that we're looking at right now. How to marry those communities and how to piece those things together. We've made it so that with the mod tools, if you're making stuff for Left 4 Dead right now, with very little work you'll be able to get it up and running in Left 4 Dead 2 and it's a matter of how all that interfaces and there are a lot of details that we still need to work out. But it's definitely a goal of ours to have cross-operability for those who own both games."

Left 4 Dead 2: Hands On
Posted @ 2:04 PM, July 3 2009, By: Chris_D In Left 4 Dead 2
My favourite gaming site, Eurogamer.net has posted a two page hands-on preview of Left 4 Dead 2. The article goes into the detail of their play experience, including several comments from the Valve team: Project lead Chet Faliszek tells me the axe can be used to one-hit kill a Witch, if you can successfully sneak up behind her. And it's likely there'll be a dedicated Achievement for that. "If you did that with a frying pan, you're going to have a bad experience," he adds, grinning. Head on over to Eurogamer for the full article.

Eurogamer Left 4 Dead 2 Interview
Posted @ 7:27 AM, July 2 2009, By: Evo In Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, News
There is a new interview with Doug Lombardi over on Eurogamer concerning Left 4 Dead 2. You can read the whole thing here but in the meant time this is a nice little taste of what you can expect to read: Eurogamer: So at the moment, you have separate teams working on Left 4 Dead 2 and supporting the original game?
Doug Lombardi: There's a couple of different teams, actually. There's guys working on Left 4 Dead 2, guys working on Left 4 Dead 1 stuff, and then guys working on the authoring tools for Left 4 Dead - the mod-making stuff. Regarding the Left 4 Dead 1 content, we'll be announcing stuff in the coming weeks, but there's nothing I can say about it today. Go read!

Gabe Newell’s Interview with G4
Posted @ 8:13 PM, June 10 2009, By: DigiQ8 In HL2: Episode 3, Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, Steam
G4 had an interview with Gabe Newell to get the latest on everything Valve, Newell discusses Left 4 Dead 2, Left 4 Dead 1 DLC and Episode Three.
G4: So, I guess the big surprise or not so surprising - because it got leaked - is Left 4 Dead 2. Why did you guys decide to go back and fire off a sequel right away?
Gabe Newell: Well, there are a couple reasons for that. One was when we were shipping the game, a bunch of the people who were working on it had all the stuff that they wanted to do right away. It really grew out of the fact that we all played Left 4 Dead pretty religiously and so people said, “You know, we don’t really want to stop. There’s too much fun stuff to go and do here.”
And then there was this other issue was from a project management perspective, we were looking at different ways of thinking about scheduling. So Robin’s [ed: Robin Walker, Software Developer/Designer] been working on Team Fortress 2, and he’s become really good at turning two month long projects, and having everybody have a lot of fun and being able to do really good work. So, like the Spy update that just came out was on schedule and everybody knew exactly what they were going to get done and felt very productive.
G4: So, is it safe to say that you have like four different projects in development right now? So, you have Left 4 Dead 2, you have Team Fortress 2, I’m going to go out on a limb and say Portal 2 and then…Episode 3?
Newell: [laughs] Uh, I’m not going to talk about things that we…we’re talking about Left 4 Dead 2 and Episode 3. As far as I know, that’s all that we’re talking about publicly.
Doug Lombardi: We’re not talking about Episode 3 publicly. (smiles)
Newell: Oh well, I guess I’m not talking about Episode 3 publicly either. (laughs) So..what’s your question? Yes, we have a lot of stuff that’s going on. We have Steam. Steam’s a lot of work. We have these movie things that we make, they take a lot of work.
Newell also mentions that they have good reasons behind Episode Three's disappearance in E3 that he will not talk about..yet. Read the full interview here.

Valve Responds to L4D 2 Criticism
Posted @ 1:57 PM, June 9 2009, By: DigiQ8 In Left 4 Dead 2
Steam ' L4D2 Boycott' group claiming that "The announced content of Left 4 Dead 2 does not warrant a stand-alone, full-priced sequel and should instead become updates (free or otherwise) for Left 4 Dead," and more than 20,000 individuals (and growing at a fast rate) have signed a boycott against the game.
The negative response was expected by Valve so they decided to text prominent map makers minutes after its reveal to let them know that their work would not be affected negatively by the sequel.
"Looking back, was the Orange Box a ripoff?" He said, on initial complaints at having to "buy" Half-Life 2 again in the compilation. "Give us a fair shake on this, read more about it, find out about it, we've already let people play it [at E3]... After that, if you want to vent, post to the forums. We do read them, we read all the forums."
We have yet to see more of the sequel, Valve claims that the new content are simply too huge to put in an update.

Lombardi Explains Need for L4D2 and more…
Posted @ 5:49 AM, June 4 2009, By: Evo In Left 4 Dead 2, News
Doug Lombardi took some time out of his busy E3 schedule to talk to Rock, Paper, Shotgun about L4D2. This is just a small bit of what he says: ...we didn’t sit down and say, “We need to ship a sequel next for next Christmas, what features do we need?” That wasn’t the way it happened, that’s not the way Valve works. What did happen was, the team sat down and said, “We’ve got a bunch of ideas of stuff we want to do.”...So we put a lot of those things on the board and said, “What can we do quickly? What’s going to take more time? What’s the best way to get stuff out to customers?” And part of that plan ended up with L4D2, with things like changing the way the finales worked, introducing some new Survivors, giving new dialogue, telling more about the story, introducing new Specials. We said, “Wow, that makes for a nice sequel.” You can read the whole thing here.Eurogamer have gone hands on with L4D2, you can read their impressions here.

“Freeman’s not done” – Lombardi
Posted @ 5:14 AM, June 3 2009, By: Evo In HL2: Episode 3, Half-Life 2, Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, News
Doug Lombardi and Chet Faliszek have talked at length with Shacknews about Left 4 Dead, but Lombardi did drop a hint about the Half-Life series: Shack: Most of us were not expecting Left 4 Dead 2 to show up at E3. You guys had teased more information on Half-Life 2: Episode 3 earlier in the year. Should we expect more on that soon?
Doug Lombardi: [laughs] Don't have a new date. Since we missed the last time, I'm not gonna put out another one. I've said this before, but Freeman's not done with his adventure. Stay tuned for more. There is also a whole load of information regarding Left 4 Dead 1 and Left 4 Dead 2, perhaps the best bit of info is that 4 v 4 matchmaking will be coming to Left 4 Dead 1 sometime this month. Doug also commented on the sequel nature of Left 4 Dead 2: Shack: What price-point should we expect?
Doug Lombardi: This is a full sequel.
Shack: So full price?
Doug Lombardi: Yeah. At the end of the day, this is going to be a bigger game than Left 4 Dead. It's five campaigns versus four, all five are playable in Versus mode, Survival mode out of the box, the new multiplayer game mode. Plus over 20 new weapons and items. It's a full sequel. This is a really detailed interview, you can check it out here.
