Doug Lombardi Responds to Left 4 Dead 2 Ban
Posted @ 8:54 AM, September 18 2009, By: DigiQ8 In Left 4 Dead 2

Two days ago Australia's Office of Film and Literature Classification refused to classify Left 4 Dead 2 because it failed to meet MA15+ classification in order for it to be released in Australia. The news came as a surprise to the folks at Valve, Doug Lombardi said..
We were surprised to hear of this news yesterday," the executive told us. "Obviously, everyone at Valve is pretty bummed.
It would be a shame if folks in Australia, or anywhere else, are unable to purchase Left 4 Dead 2 because of a ratings issue
I'm pretty sure Valve are still working through the submission process with OFLC.
Left 4 Dead 2 Possibly Banned in Australia
Posted @ 7:56 PM, September 16 2009, By: Hectic Glenn In Left 4 Dead 2

Kotaku are reporting that Left 4 Dead 2 has recently failed to meet MA15+ classification in order for it to be released in Australia. The OFLC website which shows the current classification status is showing L4D2 to have been refused classification. You can see this for yourself here - OFLC site.

There is no doubt EA and Valve will reapply, but what content changes would need to be done? Follow this as it unfolds at Kotaku who have just reported this update:
An EA spokesperson has told us they 'are still working through the submission process with OFLC and want to explore all opportunities before making any comment.'
Valve Want L4D2 PC Mods on Xbox Live
Posted @ 10:53 AM, September 14 2009, By: Evo In Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, Maps, Mods

Valve have revealed to OXM that they want to see user created content for the upcoming Left 4 Dead 2 appear on Xbox Live. However, because Live isn't set up to allow this kind of free content delivery Valve are thinking about charging for user campaigns and giving the money back to the makers. Valve's Yasser Mailaka told OXM:

"One of the things I'm thinking about is how we work within that [Xbox Live] system," "and one of the things I'd like to do is to allow these modules that are being released on PC to somehow integrate with Microsoft's system...perhaps we can shepherd the really popular campaigns onto 360. And you know, if they are a paid system, perhaps that could go back to the authors. I think that would be a great story."

It’s a Plane

So, the story starts off when the boycott started and many gamers joined the cause. Valve aka Gabe Newell decided to fly out the two lead members of the boycott. Side note many are upset that they got a chance to be flown and got the chance to see the DLC Crash Course, along with the other DLC they are working on (secretly) for Left 4 Dead and got to check out some Left 4 Dead 2. Another gamer L4D modder Joe took it upon himself to email Gabe that he deserves to be also flown out to get a tour.

Gabe replied to his email (jokingly) "We are boycotting your mod/campaign". Joe, decided to reply back with "Does...does that mean I have fly you here?". To make this interesting Gabe replied back with "Me and Erik". Joe has now begun a fund-raising blog to raise the money needed to fly Gabe and Erik out to Brisbane, Australia. Joystiq spoke to someone at Valve who suggests that Gabe will honor his agreement. Joe needed to make roughly $2400 to achieve this. Rather incredibly he’s just broken the $3000 barrier. Gabe is asking that the money be donated to Penny Arcade’s Child’s Play charity. Child’s Play raises money for providing toys and games for kids in hospitals around the world.

To some all this seems a tad silly but in the end it has made Valve look to have a sense of humor and ended up getting the community to help Joe which helps Child's Play charity. In the end, Left 4 Dead will be supported and rumor is Crash Course will be released on September 23rd.
Shacknews Interviews Chet Faliszek
Posted @ 12:57 AM, September 10 2009, By: DigiQ8 In Left 4 Dead 2

Shacknews had the opportunity to sit with Chet Faliszek and have a little chat about Left 4 Dead 2 and the Dark Carnival campaign.
Shack: Well, thanks! But seriously, what was the inspiration behind this campaign?

Chet Faliszek: So, we mainly kind of designed the whole set of campaigns as, it was really first New Orleans, Savannah, swamp, then we started looking at Georgia. We were like, well, we could either do some rural city things, or let's just kind of do a little... goofy one. And what you're playing here doesn't have the games you get to play, you haven't gotten to ride any of the rides yet, you haven't seen the finale yet, which is an odd finale. In a way, it's kind of like, you know how in the X-Files they have those one-off episodes?

Shack: Yeah.

Chet Faliszek: We went a little goofy on this one.

Another Interview with Chet Faliszek
Posted @ 8:20 PM, September 5 2009, By: DigiQ8 In Left 4 Dead 2

NoMoreGameBlog had a great interview with Valve's Chet Faliszek revealing some good stuff about Valve's Left 4 Dead 2.

He unveiled the magnum, more information about The Jockey, the ability to play as infected in the new game mode which will be revealed this October and cameos.
NMGB: Do the players have any control over their character when the Jockey’s on them, or is it a half and half thing?

CF: So how it works is, the survivor has some control, the Jockey has more control. I don’t remember the exact split at the top of my head now, but it’s about 70-30. So if you’re trying to go forward as a Jockey, and the survivor’s going to go backwards, well you’ve got 40 percent more going forwards, so you’re going to win. But now if the survivor decides to make you go off one way or the other that’s harder to fight because it’s off the tangent of your motion. A lot of times with the Jockey the first thing he wants to do is get you behind something so he can’t get shot off. But if you try to stop him by getting in the door frame or not getting out of that room, that’s how you can play it there. It takes a bit of getting used to, honestly, most new players when it first happens to them kinda do the, "I want to do the exact opposite of what you’re doing" and that doesn’t work, but if you play with it a little bit, you start to learn, and it’s funny as we get new Jockeys against people that are experienced with Jockeys, the newer people jumping on you are like “Wait a minute, I thought I had total control!” and they find out they don’t and the really experienced people can do it a bit more, so it’s a little skill based game that happens between two players or the AI.

Faliszek: Left 4 Dead 2 Works As ‘Cohesive Single Statement’
Posted @ 6:21 PM, September 4 2009, By: DigiQ8 In Left 4 Dead 2

Gamasutra sat down with Valve's project lead Chet Faliszek to talk about Left 4 Dead 2. Chet explained how a standalone sequel works better as a "single statement" than individual content packs.
"Balance is really important," Faliszek said. "Trying to do piecemeal stuff in DLC, you have a real balance issue there where you're going to have to go back and keep nerfing or expanding elements as you go on. That was one of our original thoughts when we were looking at Left 4 Dead 2, this want to have a cohesive single statement.

"The Jockey's not nearly as cool as he would be when he has the Spitter, because they work together really well" he explained, "and the Spitter's not nearly as cool without the new director AI and the Charger."
Also Valve has added scripting capability for the AI director -- functionality that will be available to modders.
Talking with them and with our own level designers, it's what they wanted to have for that experience happen. It all ties in together with the AI

Dark Carnival Unveiled

Today is the first day of PAX so expect a flood of media and hands-on previews for Valve's Left 4 Dead 2.

Starting with Eurogamer and their trip to the funland to come back with new information and screenshots of deadly clowns.

Dark Carnival (You must be this tall...to DIE) is the third of five campaigns for Left 4 Dead 2. It begins on a highway and take you across a variety of locations, from slippery hillside to a two-storey motel and ends in the carnival itself which is full of infected-packed tents and stalls.

Following a few close shaves and a descent down a slippery hillside (which the AI director saw fit to spice up with a tank - thanks for that), the survivors work through a two-storey motel complex, with roomed-up infected bashing chunks out of every door they pass to try and get at them, and then make their way into the carnival itself, full of infected-packed tents and stalls.
There are also new uncommon-common zombie clowns who call other infected over to them. There's also a new t-shirt for Ellis, an electric guitar to use as a melee weapon and of course the new special infected: The Jockey which we revealed some info about him earlier.

You can read the full preview by heading to Eurogamer.net.

There is also a new gameplay video on youtube that shows some footage of the new campaign which I think reveal a new melee weapon a weapon that we all love, The Mighty Crowbar. You can find it here.

In other news, Chet Faliszek has told Eurogamer that upcoming L4D1 DLC Crash Course costs money on Xbox Live because Microsoft insisted upon it.
"We own our platform, Steam. Microsoft owns their platform. They wanted to make sure there's an economy of value there," Faliszek told Eurogamer today when asked about the 560 Microsoft Points (£4.76 / €6.72) price tag for Crash Course. When pressed about whether Microsoft effectively enforced the pricing, Faliszek added: "Well, they helped us get the first one out for free. We had the one DLC out for free. And I think... they have to look and say, wow, we're kind of being unfair to everybody else if these guys can do that.
He also confirmed that it's still down for release in September.

Long post is over.
The Jockey is the Third Left 4 Dead 2 Special Infected
Posted @ 5:53 PM, September 2 2009, By: DigiQ8 In Left 4 Dead 2

Destructoid is reporting that the third Left 4 Dead 2 Special Infected is The Jockey.

The Jockey has the ability to control the movement of the Survivors by jumping on their back and tearing them apart - fascinating.
The Jockey is a smaller zombie who jumps on the backs of Survivors and tears them apart from behind. Not only that, but he gets to control the movements of the Survivor while he's doing it, meaning that Versus Mode just got a whole lot crazier. Sounds like a helpful little guy who'll help guide the Survivors into ambushes and other desirable locations.
How awesome is that? We'll get to see The Jockey tearing Survivors apart at PAX.

Update: We've just received a confirmation from Doug Lombardi.
Dark Carnival Campaign Due 4th to 6th Sept
Posted @ 3:39 PM, August 26 2009, By: Chris_D In Left 4 Dead 2

Steam is reporting that the third of five campaigns for Left for Dead 2 will be shown at the Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) in early September.

The third campaign we'll see, after seeing "The Parish" at E3 and "Swamp Fever" at Comic Con, will be "Dark Carnival". It will be shown off in the Valve booth and the Microsoft Xbox 360 booth. Excitingly we'll see different areas of the game in each location which means: more new media for us!
In addition to the new campaign, Valve is also planning to unveil a few more of the 20-plus new items coming this November when the title launches worldwide on the Xbox 360 and PC. For more information, please visit www.l4d.com

Chet Faliszek on Valve and Left 4 Dead
Posted @ 3:21 PM, August 19 2009, By: Evo In HL2: Episode 2, Half-Life 2, Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, Portal, Steam, Team Fortress 2

Valve's Chet Faliszek has opened up about Valve and Left 4 Dead and more to Jim Rossignol in Jim's Ragdoll Metaphysics column on Offworld. Before you start asking, no Chet doesn't have any Episode 3 news. However he does have some other interesting things to say:

The Orange Box was weird. It reminded me of 8-bit era game packs. Three Games In One! That seems really unusual in the contemporary market. Did it seem unusual now? Did it seem totally logical to create a three-game pack like that? It still seems weird, now that I think about it.

Faliszek: Well, at the start Portal wasn't mature enough for us to be sure that we should do it like that, and Team Fortress 2 has had plenty of false starts. It kind of formed as we developed the games. There was no "this is how we do it" from the get-go, instead we're a company that can experiment and yeah, it's a throw-back to earlier eras, those ways of doing things. We experiment, and it pays off.

Valve Confirm Work on Episode 3 Continues and More!
Posted @ 7:46 AM, August 14 2009, By: Evo In HL2: Episode 3, Left 4 Dead 2

In last nights Game Trailers TV Episode Valve chief Gabe Newell confirmed that Episode 3 is being worked on. Well it isn't really that shocking, but at least we know they haven't forgotten about it. Gabe also reiterated the fact that Valve aren't working on any PS3 games. You can also find some footage of the fairground level from Left 4 Dead 2.

Thanks to VG24/7 for all the info!
