Winners Announced for Halflife2.net Poem Competition
Posted @ 7:47 PM, November 19 2009, By: Hectic Glenn In Competitions, News
Many thanks to everyone who entered our competition to write a love poem to the Spitter. We had a massive response and I needed the help of our 3 poetic overlords to judge this contest. I passed on all entries (without names) to Sulkdodds, Ennui & KineticAesthetic and this is what they had to say: You ‘orrible lot. There’s not a poet among you. We have judged you, and we have judged you harshly. Perhaps it would be going too far to say that these stupendously fortunate winners are merely the best of a bad bunch. But we cannot lie: there wasn’t a single entry that didn’t at some point make the judges groan in genuine abdominal pain. Still, we suffered through it, as you did for your art – or perhaps more accurately for a copy of Left 4 Dead 2.
Therefore, without further ado: WE, the sublime triumvirate, all-seeing, all-sensing guardians of the literary canon, harbingers of the critical eschaton, eaters of the sacred flesh of the English corpus, judges of all space and all time, and according to the powers invested in us by a non-absolutist metaphysics, HEREBY ORDAIN that the winners of the halflife2.net poetry competition, to be feted throughout the halls of eternity for...um...eternity, and to dwell forever in Elysium atop of Mount Parnassus, SHALL BE:- Kilobyte
- The-One-Free-Man
- themoo
- Matthew Dryden
- Toaster leigh
Big props to all the winners and thanks to everyone who entered! You can read the 5 winning poems right here - Winning Poem Entries.PS: To the guy whose poem came with definitions: many thanks, but actually we know what words mean. We have heads the size of Volkswagens.

Thanks to our pals at 8monkey Labs the creators of the fun game Darkest of Days. We bring you again 5 chances to win a version of the game on Steam. As for the contest you must tell us what war you would of wanted to travel back to along with what weapons you would of used to win the war and why. Use your imagination to explain, and you just might win. I will hand out the 5 keys on September 19th randomly. Again I will be awarding them to you via our forums with a private message. Can you manipulate the flow of time – Braid
Posted @ 12:59 PM, September 10 2009, By: BlueWolf72 In Competitions, Steam Games

Number None's popular puzzle-platformer, Braid, is on sale at 66% off ($4.99) this weekend on Steam. To help get the word out we are giving some keys away to this fun game on Steam. I will make the contest very simple. Tell us what you would do if you could time travel. I will send you a private message so you can enjoy this awesome game. I will randomly select 5 lucky winners. Good luck to all!
Braid is a puzzle-platformer, drawn in a painterly style, where you can manipulate the flow of time in strange and unusual ways. From a house in the city, journey to a series of worlds and solve puzzles to rescue an abducted princess. In each world, you have a different power to affect the way time behaves, and it is time's strangeness that creates the puzzles. The time behaviors include: the ability to rewind, objects that are immune to being rewound, time that is tied to space, parallel realities, time dilation, and perhaps more.

Tuesday Trine Giveaway
Posted @ 6:00 PM, August 31 2009, By: BlueWolf72 In Competitions

A huge thanks to the Frozenbyte team for sending over a few copies of Trine on Steam, for us to give away to Halflife2.net. If you live under a rock, you may not played this amazingly fun and beautiful game. The gist of it is that three characters - a Thief, a Wizard, and a Knight - all touch a fabled artefact known as the Trine, which binds them together. The only way to free themselves, it seems, is to track down the other artefacts related to it, and so begins their quest, in a world that's been rather suddenly blighted by the undead.
To win a copy of Trine, we think you should dress up, as a wizard in fact! Throw together your best costume from what you can put together, and hold a sign saying " I'm a wizard, Halflife2.net". This competition is open for only 1 day, so hurry! We will award prizes to the best costumes submitted. Good luck.

Novint Falcon Design a Grip Contest!
Posted @ 12:36 PM, August 28 2009, By: Pi Mu Rho In Competitions
With the Falcon giveaways now over, we're happy to announce that Novint are providing two more Falcons for us to give away in this contest. You're going to have to work for these ones, though. What we want you to do is come up with the best design for a new Falcon grip. For those of you not knowing all that much about the Falcon controller, these are the standard grip and the pistol grip, respectively:
So basically, the bit that you hold. Now, it doesn't have to be a realistic, or even feasible design (although those are obviously just as welcome) - you can go as crazy as you like. Just keep it clean - we don't want anything R-rated. Artistic ability is not a requirement for this - we're looking for the idea. However, a well-drawn, photoshopped, modelled or sculpted entry is obviously going to catch the judge's eyes. So get to work, Halflife2.net - show us what you can do!
Rules
- All entrants must be registered forum members.
- To enter, email your design to competitions@halflife2.net with your username in the subject of the email.
- One entry per person.
- Competition closing date is September 25th, 2009
If you have any questions, feel free to comment below.
Good luck!

Third and Final Novint Falcon Giveaway!
Posted @ 3:08 AM, August 27 2009, By: Pi Mu Rho In Competitions

Surprise! Novint have provided us with one last Falcon to give away. Continuing the Left 4 Dead theme, this giveaway will be somewhat similar to the previous one. I played another game of Left 4 Dead recently, using my Falcon. This time, I played the Blood Harvest campaign on Expert, just myself and the AI bots. What you have to guess is:
How long in seconds did I last before dying?
For the sake of clarity, this is the time between me starting the demo recording at the start of playing, and stopping it when I died. The time for each demo, as listed in the console, added together is the figure we're using here.
Rules
- One guess per person.
- No duplicate guesses - if your guess is the same as one already posted, then yours won't count.
- Only members who joined prior to Thursday, August 20th may enter.
- The guess that is closest to the actual time without going over will win the Falcon.
- The contest will run for 24 hours from the time of this post.
As a reminder for those of you who may be unsure what the Falcon is and what it can do, take a look at my review here. Also remember that you can buy a Novint Falcon with a 20% discount. All you have to do is use the referral code "HL2NET" when you buy. You can find Novint's promotional Left 4 Dead page here.

Novint Contest – Falcon vs Mouse Revisited
Posted @ 10:27 AM, August 26 2009, By: Pi Mu Rho In Competitions
Hey All, this is tomnovint, Novint's CEO.
With the official release of Falcon support in Left 4 Dead (Novint put a lot of effort integrating Falcon support into L4D specifically), we wanted to have another community event - another contest - this time involving both the Left 4 Dead community and the Team Fortress 2 community. Left 4 Dead has been one of our most anticipated games to support the Falcon, and has easily been one of our beta testers favorites. Team Fortress 2 is a blast with the Falcon. I've been playing a lot recently myself.
We had quickly thrown together a contest a month ago for Team Fortress 2, in which we gave away a bunch of Falcons, and there was a lot of interest. It was a lot of fun. I've gotten many emails and PM's since then asking about when we would do another contest, but we were waiting for the L4D release.
This time, we're going to take a little more time, and make it a little more formal. We're also going to be giving away a lot more free Falcons for this contest, so it's going to be a bigger event this time around!!
You can find more information about the Falcon here (including a video). There's a two week special going on given the Left 4 Dead release, which you might check out in the link. You can get a Falcon bundle (including pistol grip and software) for as low as $139 ($174 plus a 20% discount if you use the Halflife2.net referral code, HL2NET. This is definitely one of the best Falcon deals we've done yet this year for the Steam community, so it's worth checking out.
The point of this post is to get feedback on the contest, and listen to what people think about how we should do it. Here is some of what we were initially thinking on the contest... [Read More...]
