Valve Update Midnight Riders Site
Posted @ 3:26 PM, November 20 2009, By: Hectic Glenn In Left 4 Dead 2
The mysterious website owned by Valve based around the fictitious band the Midnight Riders has been updated with a great deal of new content. We mentioned a few days back this site had players intrigued and the belief is that the Midnight Riders are likely candidates for Left 4 Dead 2 DLC. References to the band are seen and heard throughout the Dark Carnival chapter. The site now includes an extensive blog of the band's activities, album art and 2 youtube videos of songs by the band. Valve seem to be adding some depth around the story of the Midnight Riders making it likely we will see them in L4D2 as future downloadable content.

Winners Announced for Halflife2.net Poem Competition
Posted @ 7:47 PM, November 19 2009, By: Hectic Glenn In Competitions, News
Many thanks to everyone who entered our competition to write a love poem to the Spitter. We had a massive response and I needed the help of our 3 poetic overlords to judge this contest. I passed on all entries (without names) to Sulkdodds, Ennui & KineticAesthetic and this is what they had to say: You ‘orrible lot. There’s not a poet among you. We have judged you, and we have judged you harshly. Perhaps it would be going too far to say that these stupendously fortunate winners are merely the best of a bad bunch. But we cannot lie: there wasn’t a single entry that didn’t at some point make the judges groan in genuine abdominal pain. Still, we suffered through it, as you did for your art – or perhaps more accurately for a copy of Left 4 Dead 2.
Therefore, without further ado: WE, the sublime triumvirate, all-seeing, all-sensing guardians of the literary canon, harbingers of the critical eschaton, eaters of the sacred flesh of the English corpus, judges of all space and all time, and according to the powers invested in us by a non-absolutist metaphysics, HEREBY ORDAIN that the winners of the halflife2.net poetry competition, to be feted throughout the halls of eternity for...um...eternity, and to dwell forever in Elysium atop of Mount Parnassus, SHALL BE:- Kilobyte
- The-One-Free-Man
- themoo
- Matthew Dryden
- Toaster leigh
Big props to all the winners and thanks to everyone who entered! You can read the 5 winning poems right here - Winning Poem Entries.PS: To the guy whose poem came with definitions: many thanks, but actually we know what words mean. We have heads the size of Volkswagens.

Digital Price Drops Don’t Hurt – Valve
Posted @ 6:56 PM, November 18 2009, By: Hectic Glenn In Steam
Speaking today at the Montreal International Game Summit, Jason Holtman of Valve (Director of Business Development) talked about how Valve are able make dropping prices of large titles on Steam effective, increasing sales over a period of time and stop the title feeling like a bargain bin product. Fundamentally people thought that with pricing if you ever decreased the price of a product it hurt your future sales and it hurt your product as a whole. Don't ever take a top-end product and go to USD 5-10 because everybody's going to remember and they'll never buy it at the high price again, they'll think it's in the bargain bin.
But in a connected market prices can be moved up and down without penalty. You can have sales that are dramatically low and bring the price back up and people don't care. They don't care at all. You can do them instantaneously and you can experiment with them Such practice was evident during Halloween when Valve released new content and dropped TF2 to $2.50 several times. When we took the game up back to its full price after we gave away all that free content and gave away lots of copies – tens of thousands of copies – we actually increased the user base and more people came back the following weekend and bought it at full price than we were selling the week before Jason also mentioned when Left 4 Dead was sold at 50% last Christmas and Valve moved more units of Left 4 Dead on that weekend than at launch. Left 4 Dead 2 Review Roundup
Posted @ 11:49 PM, November 17 2009, By: DigiQ8 In Left 4 Dead 2
It's finally here. Left 4 Dead 2 has been released (after an hour and a half delay) on Steam yesterday, and it's amazing.
Both the PC and 360 versions have received very positive feedback from gaming websites and magazines. According to IGN "If you’re still interested in the gameplay, then you’re going to enjoy every aspect of the sequel since it’s improved in all areas" and it got it an outstanding rating (9.0/10)
1UP say there's more than enough to call this a sequel and it "earned the 2 at the end of its name". (A).
Game Informer also have a positive review..
The newest chapter in the undead uprising now oozes with even more of the proven developer’s trademark personality and polish. If you are among those who think the sequel is coming too soon, prepare to eat your words like so many brains. Left 4 Dead 2 is everything a sequel should be: perfected, expanded, and an absolute riot - 9.5/10

Enough reading, go play the game.

It's been a busy week for Steam, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Dragon Age: Origins and of course Left 4 Dead 2 later next week.
First, I'd like to talk about the Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 release which now sits on the top sellers list for this week, the game has sold over 4.7 million copies in just 24 hours making it the most successful launch in entertainment history. With over 73,834 players currently playing the multiplayer mode it's the only game that compete with Counter-Strike on the Top 75 games list. If you want to discuss more about the game you can check this thread in our forums.
From EA, Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars and Command and Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath have been just released today on Steam. And they're offering Crysis and Crysis Warhead for 50% off until Monday.
There is another weekend deal but this time from Codemasters, they are offering the entire Overlord franchise, Overlord, Overlord 2, and Overlord: Raising Hell 75% off until Monday, that's $8.75 USD for the complete pack.
Finally - There's a new Beta to participate in, Zero Gear.
Zero Gear is a multiplayer kart combat game by independent developers NimbleBit. Our game is completely centered around physics, player customization, and supporting community created custom items, custom maps and custom game modes.
To join the beta, sign up here. And for more info about the game, click here.
So what's next? Left 4 Dead 2 is coming next Tuesday - November 17th. Have you pre-ordered your copy yet?
