Tuesday Trine Giveaway
Posted @ 6:00 PM, August 31 2009, By: BlueWolf72 In Competitions

A huge thanks to the Frozenbyte team for sending over a few copies of Trine on Steam, for us to give away to Halflife2.net. If you live under a rock, you may not played this amazingly fun and beautiful game. The gist of it is that three characters - a Thief, a Wizard, and a Knight - all touch a fabled artefact known as the Trine, which binds them together. The only way to free themselves, it seems, is to track down the other artefacts related to it, and so begins their quest, in a world that's been rather suddenly blighted by the undead.
To win a copy of Trine, we think you should dress up, as a wizard in fact! Throw together your best costume from what you can put together, and hold a sign saying " I'm a wizard, Halflife2.net". This competition is open for only 1 day, so hurry! We will award prizes to the best costumes submitted. Good luck.

Novint Falcon Design a Grip Contest!
Posted @ 12:36 PM, August 28 2009, By: Pi Mu Rho In Competitions
With the Falcon giveaways now over, we're happy to announce that Novint are providing two more Falcons for us to give away in this contest. You're going to have to work for these ones, though. What we want you to do is come up with the best design for a new Falcon grip. For those of you not knowing all that much about the Falcon controller, these are the standard grip and the pistol grip, respectively:
So basically, the bit that you hold. Now, it doesn't have to be a realistic, or even feasible design (although those are obviously just as welcome) - you can go as crazy as you like. Just keep it clean - we don't want anything R-rated. Artistic ability is not a requirement for this - we're looking for the idea. However, a well-drawn, photoshopped, modelled or sculpted entry is obviously going to catch the judge's eyes. So get to work, Halflife2.net - show us what you can do!
Rules
- All entrants must be registered forum members.
- To enter, email your design to competitions@halflife2.net with your username in the subject of the email.
- One entry per person.
- Competition closing date is September 25th, 2009
If you have any questions, feel free to comment below.
Good luck!

Third and Final Novint Falcon Giveaway!
Posted @ 3:08 AM, August 27 2009, By: Pi Mu Rho In Competitions

Surprise! Novint have provided us with one last Falcon to give away. Continuing the Left 4 Dead theme, this giveaway will be somewhat similar to the previous one. I played another game of Left 4 Dead recently, using my Falcon. This time, I played the Blood Harvest campaign on Expert, just myself and the AI bots. What you have to guess is:
How long in seconds did I last before dying?
For the sake of clarity, this is the time between me starting the demo recording at the start of playing, and stopping it when I died. The time for each demo, as listed in the console, added together is the figure we're using here.
Rules
- One guess per person.
- No duplicate guesses - if your guess is the same as one already posted, then yours won't count.
- Only members who joined prior to Thursday, August 20th may enter.
- The guess that is closest to the actual time without going over will win the Falcon.
- The contest will run for 24 hours from the time of this post.
As a reminder for those of you who may be unsure what the Falcon is and what it can do, take a look at my review here. Also remember that you can buy a Novint Falcon with a 20% discount. All you have to do is use the referral code "HL2NET" when you buy. You can find Novint's promotional Left 4 Dead page here.

Dark Carnival Campaign Due 4th to 6th Sept
Posted @ 3:39 PM, August 26 2009, By: Chris_D In Left 4 Dead 2
Steam is reporting that the third of five campaigns for Left for Dead 2 will be shown at the Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) in early September. The third campaign we'll see, after seeing "The Parish" at E3 and "Swamp Fever" at Comic Con, will be "Dark Carnival". It will be shown off in the Valve booth and the Microsoft Xbox 360 booth. Excitingly we'll see different areas of the game in each location which means: more new media for us! In addition to the new campaign, Valve is also planning to unveil a few more of the 20-plus new items coming this November when the title launches worldwide on the Xbox 360 and PC. For more information, please visit www.l4d.com For the original news post head here.

Novint Contest – Falcon vs Mouse Revisited
Posted @ 10:27 AM, August 26 2009, By: Pi Mu Rho In Competitions
Hey All, this is tomnovint, Novint's CEO.
With the official release of Falcon support in Left 4 Dead (Novint put a lot of effort integrating Falcon support into L4D specifically), we wanted to have another community event - another contest - this time involving both the Left 4 Dead community and the Team Fortress 2 community. Left 4 Dead has been one of our most anticipated games to support the Falcon, and has easily been one of our beta testers favorites. Team Fortress 2 is a blast with the Falcon. I've been playing a lot recently myself.
We had quickly thrown together a contest a month ago for Team Fortress 2, in which we gave away a bunch of Falcons, and there was a lot of interest. It was a lot of fun. I've gotten many emails and PM's since then asking about when we would do another contest, but we were waiting for the L4D release.
This time, we're going to take a little more time, and make it a little more formal. We're also going to be giving away a lot more free Falcons for this contest, so it's going to be a bigger event this time around!!
You can find more information about the Falcon here (including a video). There's a two week special going on given the Left 4 Dead release, which you might check out in the link. You can get a Falcon bundle (including pistol grip and software) for as low as $139 ($174 plus a 20% discount if you use the Halflife2.net referral code, HL2NET. This is definitely one of the best Falcon deals we've done yet this year for the Steam community, so it's worth checking out.
The point of this post is to get feedback on the contest, and listen to what people think about how we should do it. Here is some of what we were initially thinking on the contest... [Read More...]

Another Novint Falcon Giveaway!
Posted @ 5:10 AM, August 24 2009, By: Pi Mu Rho In News

After the popularity of our previous giveaway, we're happy to announce that, courtesy of the generosity of Novint we have another Falcon to give away to a lucky forum member! This time, there's a little bit more to it than just posting in the thread. To commemorate Novint and Valve's support for Left 4 Dead, this giveaway has a decidely more undead theme to it.
Here's what you have to do - recently, I played a game of Left 4 Dead using my Falcon. I played the No Mercy campaign, on Advanced difficulty with two other people and one AI bot. All you have to do is guess the score. For the purposes of this giveaway, "score" means the following: The total number of Common Infected killed during the campaign multiplied by the total amount of Friendly Fire incidents I caused during the campaign, with my accuracy percentage applied. As an example, if we killed 394 zombies in total, I managed to shoot my teammates 5 times, and my accuracy was 12%, then you would come up with 394 x 5 x 0.12 = 236.4 Of course, if that's too difficult then you can just guess a number - this is just to show how the score was worked out. It could be amusing to see some of the figures you come up with, though...
Rules
- One guess per person.
- No duplicate guesses - if your guess is the same as one already posted, then yours won't count.
- Only members who joined prior to Thursday, August 20th may enter. The last giveaway was open to anyone, this one is for the established members.
- The guess that is closest to the actual score without going over will win the Falcon.

HL2.net Interview with Insurgency
Posted @ 8:31 PM, August 23 2009, By: BlueWolf72 In Mods, Steam
Insurgency: Modern Infantry Combat (now available on Steam) has received the Player's Choice 2007 Mod of the Year award from ModDB, as well as the "Best Source Mod of 2007" Gold Award from Steamfriends. With all the success they have had the team is hard at work on Beta 2 and Beta 3. Spielmann, leader of the mod needed a break from all the work to spend some time promoting the popular mod. We even got a quick interview along with some exclusive screen shots for you to take a look at. Beta 2 expected in August has some awesome improvements including: bug fixes, visual updates, map updates, audio updates & new features We at Insurgency Team believe that the community has every reason to be excited about this update. This is a major milestone in the development of the mod that will address an extensive list of long-overdue bugs and that takes into account valuable suggestions from our community. This is not a small patch or a minor content upgrade like the ones we have released through Steam in the past. We really wanted to make sure Insurgency 2.x will be updated to a point where it can be fully enjoyed by everybody without the need of much intervention from our side so that we can concentrate all efforts in the development of the next major version. Because of the outstanding expansion of INS as a competitive multiplayer game in the past year, we were able to gather outstanding feedback that has helped us add extra functionality and improve its gameplay, making it a better game in every respect.
The Insurgency team have already started work on porting their mod over to the Orange Box engine with countless new features. You can read about this development in our interview and see the new media below.
For the time being, see the end of our interview article for a full changelist of the upcoming August Upgrade for the current verison of Insurgency on Steam. Below are a few videos showcasing some of the new features & updates:

Novint Falcon Left 4 Dead Support and Giveaway
Posted @ 1:18 AM, August 22 2009, By: Pi Mu Rho In News
Novint, creators of the highly-acclaimed Falcon gaming controller have announced, in conjunction with Valve, full support for the Falcon in Left 4 Dead. If you're unsure about the Falcon and what it does, then take a look at my review (with videos!) here.
After having used mine for several weeks now, I can highly recommend it for the extra dimension it gives to games. Left 4 Dead in particular becomes a far more intense experience, and it just tends to feel a bit flat without it. Novint are constantly adding support for more games, and are soon to release their "F-gen" drivers, allowing the Falcon to act as a mouse and therefore to be used in practically any game.
To celebrate the full support of Left 4 Dead, we've teamed up with Novint to allow you to purchase a Novint Falcon with a 20% discount. All you have to do is use the referral code "HL2NET" when you buy. You can find Novint's promotional Left 4 Dead page here.
In addition to that, and thanks to Novint's generosity, we've given away a Falcon bundle to forum user Dekstar!

Chet Faliszek on Valve and Left 4 Dead
Posted @ 3:21 PM, August 19 2009, By: Evo In HL2: Episode 2, Half-Life 2, Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, Portal, Steam, Team Fortress 2
Valve's Chet Faliszek has opened up about Valve and Left 4 Dead and more to Jim Rossignol in Jim's Ragdoll Metaphysics column on Offworld. Before you start asking, no Chet doesn't have any Episode 3 news. However he does have some other interesting things to say: The Orange Box was weird. It reminded me of 8-bit era game packs. Three Games In One! That seems really unusual in the contemporary market. Did it seem unusual now? Did it seem totally logical to create a three-game pack like that? It still seems weird, now that I think about it.
Faliszek: Well, at the start Portal wasn't mature enough for us to be sure that we should do it like that, and Team Fortress 2 has had plenty of false starts. It kind of formed as we developed the games. There was no "this is how we do it" from the get-go, instead we're a company that can experiment and yeah, it's a throw-back to earlier eras, those ways of doing things. We experiment, and it pays off. You can find this in-depth interview here.
