Robin Walker Talks About TF2 Unlock System And Future Updates
Posted @ 8:39 PM, July 21 2009, By: DigiQ8 In News
TF2 fan site Community Fortress had an interview with Team Fortress 2 Lead Designer, Robin Walker. And they got some interesting answers about the unlock system and future updates.
At the very least, future packs will allow you to use achievements to get the new items, but we might move to a mode where we just give them to you," he added. "As part of our goal of supporting tournaments more, I think we'll probably add better tools for them to control exactly what players can and can't use within matches.
Walker also mention some plans about a couple of large updates that aren't tied to a specific class.
We don't really know yet, to be honest. We've still got lots of ideas for what we could do with TF2, but in the short term we'll continue to do what we've done up until now: not plan too far ahead, so we can remain fluid and reactive to the feedback we get from players. We already have a couple of large updates in the works that aren't tied to a specific class, so we'll see what you think of those.
I strongly suggest you read this interview, head to Community Fortress for more.

Halflife2.net Review the Novint Falcon
Posted @ 1:52 PM, July 21 2009, By: Hectic Glenn In HL2: Episode 2, Halflife2.net, Left 4 Dead
In the not too distant past, Valve added a sneaky update for most of their Source games: Adding support for the Novint Falcon. The falcon is a haptic controller replacing your mouse of joystick to give you a real hands on feel for games. Our very own Pi Mu Rho managed to get hold of one and has written a full in depth review of his experience. ...then I used the Gravity Gun. This, to me, was the most impressive feature. With every object you pick up, you can actually feel the weight of it. Light objects have barely any effect, but if you pick up something heavy - a large rock, for example - and the Falcon pushes constantly down, requiring actual physical effort on your part to hold it steady. Be sure to read the review and check out 2 videos of Pi playing Episode 2 and Left 4 Dead with the Falcon. Novint Falcon Review.

Novint Falcon Review
Posted @ 7:59 AM, July 21 2009, By: Pi Mu Rho In Reviews
I seem to recall that I had heard of the Novint Falcon previously, when it was being shown off as a haptic controller aimed primarily at 3d modelling, but it didn't really come to my attention again until recently, with the announcement of native support for Valve's most recent games, along with the pistol grip controller. Research and Development
Posted @ 4:39 PM, July 20 2009, By: Evo In HL2: Episode 2, Mods
Research and Development is a recent mod developed by mbortolino which is described as being a puzzle-centric mod for Half-Life 2: Episode Two featuring an unarmed player but plenty of violent mayhem. It seems to be pretty popular as I have spotted a few of my Steam friends playing it already. It is also getting some good reactions from people on ModDB with a 9.4 average rating. There is also a piece about the mod on Rock, Paper, Shotgun. If you want to check it out head here and see what it is all about. You will need Episode 2 installed to play it.

Gamespy Swamp Fever Preview
Posted @ 4:07 PM, July 20 2009, By: DigiQ8 In Left 4 Dead 2
GameSpy has the first hands-on with the new Left 4 Dead 2 Swamp Fever campaign. Swamp Fever is the only campaign in L4D2 that starts out in the night, and also features new level-specific infected, they're called the Mud Men, " they are zombies who run on all fours incredibly quickly, making them hard to detect".
It sounds like such a small thing, but the addition of a level-specific common infected, referred to as "common-uncommons" internally, completely alters the way a level like Swamp or Parish plays. In Swamp the level-specific zombies are mud men: zombies who run on all fours incredibly quickly, making them hard to detect, and especially so when they're in a couple feet of water. This resulted in our team having to be hyper-vigilant when wandering through the bayou, watching the water the way that Han Solo and company did when facing the Dianoga in the Death Star trash compactor. During the not-so-quiet moments, like when we were trying to protect a teammate who'd been covered in Boomer bile, these little zombies could come out of nowhere, providing ample distraction for other infected to close the gaps on our defensive positions. The Parish campaign also featured a level-specific zombie in the form of biohazard suit infected, whose invulnerability to fire created some tough situations when we were relying on molotovs to provide safety.
Don't miss the full preview, head to Gamespy to read more and watch the new gameplay footage.

You Steam The Future?
Posted @ 5:37 AM, July 20 2009, By: BlueWolf72 In Mods, Steam, Steam Games, Team Fortress 2
In a recent interview ABC TV’s Good Game, Valve boss Gabe Newell says Valve wants to let the Steam community fund future game development.
Valve shocked the world with Steam and Gabe is considering a way for you to pay upfront as a community for the game you would play. Imagine paying $30.00 dollars for for another Half-Life, or maybe Opposing Force 2 would you do it?
“One of the areas that I am super interested in right now is how we can do financing from the community. So right now, what typically happens is you have this budget - it needs to be huge, it has to be $10m - $30m, and it has to be all available at the beginning of the project. There’s a huge amount of risk associated with those dollars and decisions have to be incredibly conservative.
What I think would be much better would be if the community could finance the games. In other words, ‘Hey, I really like this idea you have. I’ll be an early investor in that and, as a result, at a later point I may make a return on that product, but I’ll also get a copy of that game.’
So move financing from something that occurs between a publisher and a developer… Instead have it be something where funding is coming out of community for games and game concepts they really like.”

Left 4 Dead Update – Lobby Browser Added
Posted @ 6:30 PM, July 16 2009, By: Hectic Glenn In Left 4 Dead
A new update has been released for Left 4 Dead tonight, the main addition being a new lobby browser. The lobby browser (under Play Online) will show you a list of optimal games available for you to join. The browser pares down the thousands of lobbies and games currently being played to show you the best list of games available to you. This list includes official and add-on campaigns, including add-on campaigns you have not yet installed, making it a great way to discover them. You can filter by difficulty, official and/or add-on campaigns and by lobbies and/or games in progress. Alongside this update there are several other small server and add-on campaign fixes as well as SDK changes. Full change log can be found here.

Sniper Elite has sniped itself onto Steam today. If you purchase it you also get the 10% discount. I honestly had fun playing this and I hope you do to. Pros: Realistic bullet physics make long-range shooting challenging and satisfying. Cons: Missions can take a long time to complete. If you need a video showing off the game play click here.
World War II draws to a close, the first covert battles of the Cold War begin. Caught in the life and death struggle between Soviets and Germans in war-torn Berlin, you control the fate of a lone American OSS Sniper. Disguised as a German and working deep behind enemy lines you must stop Stalin's forces from gaining control of Germany's nuclear secrets. Prepare to alter the course of history.
