Left 4 Dead matchmaking details
Posted @ 2:02 AM, November 6 2008, By: AciD In News
Eric Smith posted on HLDS(Half-Life Dedicated Server) mailing list very interesting informations about Left 4 Dead matchmaking.
Left 4 Dead will use the new matchmaking system we've been working on.
The new matchmaking system replaces the traditional server browser. By running a public dedicated server your server will be added to a list of servers available for clients to use when playing. Games are started from a Game Lobby by clients, who are then connected to a dedicated server when they start the game. When they're done, your server is added back to the list of available servers. Clients will be able to "Quick Match", "Play Online", and "Play With Friends" when they want to play a game.
You will still have access to the traditional Message of the Day for your server. For Left 4 Dead, we've added a banner ad you can create that will be displayed to clients when they're playing on your server. There is also a ranking system to show the popularity of your server.
This is the first version of what we've been working on, and we're going to want feedback from all of you once things start turning up tomorrow.
It appears that VALVe took different approach to servers, and I personally like it.

RPS Left 4 Dead versus mode impressions
Posted @ 11:58 AM, November 5 2008, By: AciD In News
Rock, Paper, Shotgun have posted their impressions on Left 4 Dead versus mode.
This is how multiplayer should be, people! One side deliberately over-powerful, the other side constantly respawning and aiming to grief as much as they can. And even when being trounced, that experience was a lot of fun. It might feel like running with a bungee cord tied around your waist, but it’s still entertaining when you fall flat on your face and get flung backward.
Pure cinema. Very funny. Very brutal.

Posted @ 11:10 AM, November 5 2008, By: Hectic Glenn In Mods
We brought you news on this mod back in August, a modification with 3 planned episodes which will be linked via a twisted plot. The first of which is called Paradigm Decay, however the team have released a gameplay video of another episode called Human Error. Alongside this update they have a new website and forums which you can find here. See below for the video introducing some old friends, including the alien grunts and controllers.

New Left 4 Dead Preview on L4D411 Includes Expert Footage
Posted @ 4:27 AM, November 5 2008, By: DigiQ8 In Left 4 Dead
Left 4 Dead 411 have traveled to Valve's HQ to play some Left 4 Dead on expert level and they got some footage to prove it!
First, a word on difficulty: Expert mode plays differently than the other modes. It's much more defensive than the other modes. You'll never find yourself surrounded by zombies and still alive like you see happen in many previous videos. When each individual Infected does 20 damage per melee hit, it only takes a second to get knocked down to zero health. What this means in terms of gameplay and strategy, and what you'll certainly see in the videos, is that as a team we're constantly shooting Infected from far distances. The higher the difficulty mode, the more paranoid you need to be about zombies getting anywhere near you. We apologize if this makes watching the videos a little less exciting than the lower difficulty modes, but that's the only way to survive. Onto the videos!
It's a good preview with some good footage, check it out here.
Don't forget to pre-order Left 4 Dead on Steam or Gamestop to enjoy the demo tomorrow.

RPS Killed Over 11,000 Zombies
Posted @ 4:53 PM, November 4 2008, By: DigiQ8 In Left 4 Dead
Rock, Paper, Shotgun have the first-impressions of each of the four RPS editors about Left 4 Dead.
Creepy Singing Ladies - Witches, who remain motionless until disturbed by light, noise or an errant gunshot. Their eerie song and simultaneous sobbing are by far the most terrifying thing in the game. Upon waking up, they’re a whirling dervish of destruction. Fight every instinct to shoot the apparently frail things and sneak around them.

Good news! Ubisoft just expanded their games catalog into South and Central America. Is this the first step to release their games worldwide? I hope so. This includes hits such as Far Cry 2, Assassin's Creed, Brothers in Arms: Hells Highway, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2, Silent Hunter III, Beyond Good & Evil, and dozens more.

Steam Cloud Coming This Week
Posted @ 1:17 PM, November 3 2008, By: DigiQ8 In News, Steam
Valve announced Steam Cloud a set of services for Steam that stores application data online and allows user experiences to be consistent from any PC, is coming out this week. This free steam extension will ship with the Left 4 Dead demo coming on Thursday for you who pre-ordered and Nov 11th for you who still having doubts for the game.
the information stored and accessible through the Steam Cloud includes keyboard, mouse, and gamepad configurations, as well as multiplayer settings such as spraypaint images.
The Steam Cloud will "just work," meaning any user changes to their game options will propagate to the Cloud by default. Upon logging into Steam from another PC, these settings will be brought down from the Cloud and automatically leveraged by the game. Any configuration changes on this second machine are then synced to the Cloud for future sessions.
Valve will add Cloud support to its back catalog of Steam games. And it will be available to all publishers and developers using Steam, free of charge.
Update:
HL2net: Could Steam Cloud store saved games online?
Doug Lombardi: "Not initially, but it is planned for a future update."
