Valve on the Graphics/Processor Debate
Posted @ 12:49 PM, September 30 2008, By: Evo In News
In a sneak preview of an interview to appear later this week CVG have recieved word from Doug Lombardi concerning Valve's thoughts on the debate between putting the graphics card ahead of the CPU as the most important piece of the PC. "For a long time the GPU side has been leading the charge towards brighter, shinier games, and it usually ends up that whoever has the best looking game at shows like E3 usually gets game of the show. We've always looked at that shaking our heads thinking it's not always about the graphics. We've all seen games that looked really pretty and got all these awards but then it comes out and there's not much of a game there." Check it out here.

Left 4 Dead – PC Gamer Showdown Impressions
Posted @ 2:51 PM, September 29 2008, By: Evo In Left 4 Dead, News
The PC Gamer Showdown has come and gone, and as far as I am aware nobody here went to it. However my good friend SteveTheBlack did go and of the games on show he spent most of his time with Left 4 Dead. Steve thought the game was so good he queued up three different times to get to play it. He talks about his experiences right here.It was a witch that gave me the biggest fright during one play through. One of my buddies set her off and got floored. It was a dark room, lit by flashlights at the occasional crackle of a damaged light. In the distance, where my buddy had been moments before, were two glowing eyes staring at me. The lights flickered and I saw her, just for an instant. She was ripping into a figure on the ground, but her eyes were looking at me. I was her next target, she had already decided that, all she was doing now was deciding which part of me to eat first. Luckily, a clip of hunting rifle bullets was sufficient to put her down just as she got close enough to nom on my fleshy goodness, albeit with some help from the other survivors. Read his impressions of Left 4 Dead here.

Firearms: Source Update
Posted @ 11:21 AM, September 24 2008, By: Hectic Glenn In Mods
Firearms: Source comes to us with a mighty update showcasing a couple of brand new weapons, and in game screenshots. FA:S now has 36 guns ready to roll out, and they are working on even more. The most recent 5 include a M16A2, G3, Beretta 92FS, OTs-33 automatic pistol and the well known Vollmer from the original Firearms. (See media below for it in action). Also for those of you curious on way the FA weapon system operates, this update has provided further information on this gameplay system. When joining a server, each player is given 30 credits to spend on whatever combination of fire-power, body armour and items they want. With over 36 guns , 3 vest types, 3 kinds of armour addons, and numerous misc items, there's an unfathomable amount of options available. With no restrictions other than the 30 credits, players can choose all kinds of set-ups from traditional primary/secondary/knife/grenade and "medium" amounts of body armour, to carrying five pistols and six grenades, two assault rifles and a helmet, a sniper rifle and a submachine gun, three submachine guns and a pistol, or just go full heavy armour and a shotgun.
The team has also taken a lot of new talent on recently, freeing up more time for the developers. However they are always looking for highly skilled mappers, animators and sound artists if you want to be involved in a very high quality mod. See the full update for Firearms: Source, on their website, including some nice renders.

Portal Prelude Interview
Posted @ 10:02 AM, September 20 2008, By: Evo In Mods, Portal
You want to see a meaty interview with Nicholas from Portal Prelude? Well look no further than here on halflife2.net where I talked to Nicholas about the making of Prelude and a little bit about the story behind it. Here is a little taste of what to expect: Chris - How do you feel fans of Portal are going to react to seeing other NPCs in the game?
Our testers were not that annoyed. Because there's no GlaDOS, and because it's in the past. We needed to find something a bit more "realistic" and "familiar" to talk with the player. The former human employees of Aperture Science were a really good idea, because basically, we never really see them during the test. You hear them, and you know they're watching you, just like if it was GlaDOS. Check out the whole thing right here.

Portal: Prelude
Posted @ 6:03 PM, September 15 2008, By: DigiQ8 In Portal
When I saw the title Portal: Prelude, I thought this going to be another mappack for Portal...but it isn't, as its name states it, it's an unofficial prequel to the game Portal. It's not just a mappack, it's a whole new story.
Portal: Prelude, the upcoming unofficial prequel to the game Portal. Its story revolves around the pre-GlaDOS epoch, even before she was plugged in. At this time, test subjects were monitored by real Aperture Science employees, whose work was tedious, lengthy and repetitive. This is why they decided to build a great artificial intelligence that could both replace them in these difficult tasks, and also take responsibility for many other tasks within the complex and compete with Black Mesa's superiority.
All employees of the Aperture Science complex are now eagerly awaiting GlaDOS. Maybe even a little too eagerly, as the upcoming events will tell...
This game is totally free and set to be released somewhere around the end of September. It offers a bit more gameplay hours than the original Portal, with 8 chapters, 48 challenges, 6 advanced maps, a brand new storyline and more than 400 lines of speech with english and french subtitles.
Watch the game trailer here (highly recommended). And click here for more info.

Crytek and Valve today announced that Crysis Warhead and Crysis are coming to Steam, Both games will be available for pre-purchase via Steam starting this weekend, and expected to be released in mid September.
"The millions of gamers logging into Steam every week to play today's best PC games are going to love Crysis Warhead," said Avni Yerli, Managing Director at Crytek. "Crytek Hungary has done a terrific job creating this new experience while optimizing CryEngine 2, and we're looking forward to delivering it and the original Crysis as our first offerings on Steam."
"Crytek is one of the industry's great success stories, emerging new technology and talent," said Gabe Newell, president and co-founder of Valve. "Crysis is one of today's leading PC franchises and delivering the original and Crysis Warhead via Steam is landmark for the platform."
The follow up to Crysis, one of the highest rated PC games of last year, Crysis Warhead will take players through the parallel story of Sergeant Michael 'Psycho' Sykes as he embarks on an intense, explosive adventure on the other side of the island. With waves of more challenging human and alien enemies to navigate through, players will once again be outfitted with the revolutionary Nanosuit and an arsenal of new weapons and vehicles to help Psycho complete his critical mission.Crysis Warhead will also come with Crysis Wars®, a tailor-made experience for multiplayer gamers, featuring three diverse match types and 21 maps.
This deal is more between Crytek and Valve than EA and Valve, so don't expect EA games on Steam anytime soon. UPDATE: This is now available
