Valve and the PC
Posted @ 6:07 PM, June 27 2008, By: Evo In News

I happened across a very interesting article on Eurogamer earlier which can be viewed as a followup to the mini-conference Valve had with a select group of journalists last month.

While there is a lack of any news regarding upcoming games from Valve, this is a very interesting article which looks at the role Steam is playing in keeping the PC as a leading games platform as well as the expansion of PC gaming in non-English speaking countries. It is well worth a read right here.
No Episode 3 at E3
Posted @ 5:59 PM, June 27 2008, By: Evo In HL2: Episode 3, News

Kotaku has squashed a rumour regarding Episode 3 and E3. An unofficial E3 site, E3.net has been advertising Half-Life 2:Episode 3 as appearing at the yearly gaming mecca. Kotaku has word from Doug Lombardi that Episode 3 won't be appearing at E3. However with Left 4 Dead only an ever shrinking handful of months away expect a big blowout of L4D news.

Left 4 Dead Release Date, Previews and Gameplay Videos
Posted @ 4:30 AM, June 24 2008, By: DigiQ8 In Left 4 Dead

Gametrailers.com has an interview with Mike Booth and revealed that November 4th is the release date for Valve's Zombie game Left 4 Dead. You can watch the interview here.

Also Gametrailers has 5 gameplay videos which shows enhanced HUD and better visual effects such as film grain, shifts in color palette, and blood spatter In other news, both 1UP and Kotaku posted their impressions:
1UP:

The new feature we saw this time around is the overall art polish. The HUD seems the same, but notifications (such as friendly fire warnings and revivals) are now more prominent. Visual effects such as film grain, shifts in color palette, and blood spatter have been added to give more of that "relentless zombie movie" vibe to the game. The combination of blur filters plus the black-and-white tint when you're knocked down (your health has been drained, and you're down on the ground, pistols blazing, until another player rescues you) adds a nice measure of visceral impact.
Kotaku:

There are some nice touches scattered throughout that make Left 4 Dead stand out and these pop-up warnings come into play elsewhere. For example, in one area, you are warned that zombies don't like car alarms. In fact, they become enraged when they hear them. Unfortunately, it's sometimes hard to avoid hitting an alarmed car and rage sets in. You'll also see pop-ups that essentially say "Pull this level and expect mass hysteria." It's funnier when Valve does it.
You can read 1UP preview here or Kotaku's here. Remember mark you calenders Left 4 Dead is coming November 4th on both PC and XBox 360.

Pyro Update Details
Posted @ 5:50 AM, June 18 2008, By: DigiQ8 In Team Fortress 2

So tomorrow is a big day for all Pyros around the world, the next major update for Team Fortress 2 will include new achievements and unlockable weapons for the pyro as well as some significant changes to the class. Now for the details:

The Maps:

CP_fastlane (created by Arttu "skdr" Mäki): A control point map with five points, in the style of Badlands. Its symmetrical layout provides for high-speed and well balanced gameplay, while the multiple indoor routes, connected to larger outdoor arenas, provide a wide set of interesting and varied combat spaces. The arena-style control points require solid teamwork to capture and hold.

CTF_turbine (created by Bill Johnston): A CTF map inside a large industrial compound. It's clean and straightforward, making it easy to learn, but its well balanced layout ensures there are still a wide variety of strategic choices for teams to make, and for individual classes to shine. Competitive teams and players have already popularized this one.

The Weapons:

1. The Flare Gun: The first Pyro unlockable is The Flare Gun, which replaces the shotgun. It allows the Pyro to ignite an enemy at long range, but does require careful aim on their part. It’s particularly useful for causing havoc on Snipers and Engineers who want to keep their distance.

2. The Backburner: The second Pyro unlockable is The Backburner. This flamethrower is built for the Pyro who likes to ambush their opponents. It removes the compression blast capability, instead guaranteeing critical hits whenever it’s used on an opponent from behind. To aid in survivability, it grants the Pyro an extra fifty health.

3. The Axtinguisher: The third Pyro unlockable is The Axtinguisher. This mighty axe guarantees critical hits on any enemy that’s currently on fire, although it’s significantly weaker against enemies who aren’t. A great combination with the The Flare Gun, or with another Pyro buddy riding alongside doing the igniting.

In addition to the three unlockable Pyro weapons, there is significant addition to the base Pyro flamethrower. By hitting the alt-fire key, the Pyro is able to produce a blast of compressed air that knocks enemies away, and redirects enemy projectiles. It’s a highly versatile tool, allowing Pyros to get away from nearby enemies after igniting them, to kill enemy soldiers with their own rockets, or to separate enemy Medics from their healing targets. In particular, it allows a skilled Pyro to contain an enemy invulnerability push, and even to separate the Medic completely if the surrounding terrain supports it.

I'm so hyped right now, too bad i have exams this weekend :( , can't wait to burn you online.

More Portal 2 Details
Posted @ 9:26 PM, June 10 2008, By: DigiQ8 In Portal

Kotaku are back again with more details on Portal 2, they got even more info from the rumored casting call reported yesterday. Prequel? Based on the dialogue below it's not. Beware SPOILERS BELOW:
The script samples we saw for the Cave Johnson role indicate that the Aperture CEO and "eccentric dead billionaire" is, well, already dead, living on in simulated computer form. He tells an unnamed rookie test subject via loudspeaker that "As of this mornin' yer old buddy Cave has been resurrected inside of a computer. And I never felt better!" acting as this entry's GlaDOS—possibly that prototypical GlaDOS, as theorized earlier—encouraging the player to continue the testing while waxing philosophical about the afterlife.

"I been thinkin," the script reads, "Heck, suspended as I am in this inky purgatorium, I got nothin' to do but think. What if them engineers didn't do me no favors pourin' me into a computer? What if they denied me my final reward?"

No telling if this internal conflict is the catalyst for Johnson "[losing] his grip on humanity as the story progresses" but if things go wonderfully wrong as they did in the first, it would certainly make for a compelling narrative.
I have to say WOW!. Remember though this is still a rumor.
Casting Call Reveals Portal 2 Details?
Posted @ 12:23 AM, June 10 2008, By: DigiQ8 In Portal

Kotaku got their hands on what may be the first info about Portal 2, supposedly the site "Breakdown Express" a private site for the industry have a casting call from Valve for an actor to play "Cave Johnson" "a self-made billionaire who's learned to trust his gut and doesn't sweat the details, is a big picture thinker." The casting call continues on to describe him.". You can read the casting call below:

This casting call suggest that Portal 2 may be a prequel (kinda make sense from story-telling point of view).

The Axtinguisher is Coming
Posted @ 7:51 PM, June 6 2008, By: DigiQ8 In Team Fortress 2

Last month Valve updated it's highly successful multiplayer game Team Fortress 2 with new achievements and unlockables for the Medic class, and since the new system worked so well Valve confirmed last week to PCGamer UK that The Pyro will be the next class to get updated. Today Valve revealed one of the new unlockables for The Pyro and it called The Axtinguisher.

Although The Axtinguisher does about half of normal damage to standard run-of-the-mill non-burning enemies, once you light someone on fire the Axtinguisher will guarantee a critical hit. Sounds good...very good.

Along with all of the new content The Pyro will receive significant changes regardless of whether you have unlocked any new items.
