How Valve is revitalising PC gaming?
Posted @ 7:25 AM, March 27 2008, By: DigiQ8 In Steam

CVG have posted a great article about Valve, Steam and the PC Gaming, and how Valve becoming the platform holder and guardian of the PC as a gaming system.
Developers wanting to use the service only need to contact Valve to get access to the secret sauce. Valve will provide the application process interface (API) to anyone who wants to hook it into the code of their game. The sheer number of tools available is mind-boggling, but there's one clear benefit outweighing all the others: Steam has killed Valve's day zero piracy problem.

New Team Fortress 2 Content Scheduled for Mid-April
Posted @ 5:38 PM, March 26 2008, By: DigiQ8 In Team Fortress 2

Looks like the massive team fortress 2 update is slated to arrive on April 20th, Valve has informed Shacknews. Including the new Goldrush map, unlockable weapons, and Meet the Scout video and other tweaks for the game.
Goldrush will mark the first map in a new game mode called "Payload," which will task the Blue team with herding a mine cart full of explosives toward the Red base. The more players near the cart, the faster it will move, the Red team winning if it prevents Blue from reaching its goal. The map will also be the first to utilize the cinematic physics technology from Half-Life 2: Episode Two.
Folks, mark your calendars.
New Team Fortress 2 Interview on IGN
Posted @ 5:14 AM, March 26 2008, By: DigiQ8 In Team Fortress 2

IGN had the opportunity to to ask Robin Walker some questions about what to expect in Team Fortress 2's future. In this interview Walker reveals new medigun and how to unlock this weapon. I'm just going to point out the most important highlights in this interview.
  • The unlockable medigun will switches out the 10 second invulnerability effect for 10 seconds of 100% chance of critical hits.
  • You unlock the first Medic unlockable when you complete 12 of the 36 Medic achievements, the second at 24, and the third at 36.
  • Goldrush is coming along with the Medic achievements and unlockable weaponry.
  • The cart in Goldrush moves faster the more Blu players are near it, and contains a handy dispenser to heal and resupply them as they escort it. The Red team wins if they can keep the cart from reaching their base.
  • Goldrush is the first map to use the cinematic physics technology from Half-Life 2: Episode 2 in a multiplayer environment

PCGamer Preview of The New TF2 updates
Posted @ 4:34 PM, March 25 2008, By: DigiQ8 In Team Fortress 2

In this month issue, PCGamer pinned down Robin Walker to talk about the upcoming Team Fortress 2 massive update which includes; new modes, tweaks and 36 new achievements. Mr.Walker had a few examples for the upcoming Medic achievements such as:
  • Placebo Effect: kill five enemies in a single life while having your uber-charge ready, but undeployed.
  • Preventive Medicine: block the enemy from capturing a control point with an uber-charged teammate.
  • Triage: deploy an uber-charge on a teammate less than a second before they're hit by a critical explosive.
  • Autopsy Report: provide an enemy with a freeze-cam shot of you taunting above their ragdoll.
"We design achievements in much the same way we design TF2 classes", Walker said "Once we understand who the "customer" for an achievement is, it's fairly straightforward to design and test it."

On the new tweaks, Valve got a few tweaks for the Pyro in mind, which requires a significant new addition to the Pyro. And for the Medic they try to give him tools that "increase the difference between a highly skilled Medic and a beginner", and the first step towards that is the unlockable weaponry (such as the Overhealer, an upgrade that permanently doubles a target's health, but disables uber-charging)

That's some of what coming to Team Fortress 2 in the upcoming months, in the mean-time you can read a new interview with Robin Walker on the radical new changes to TF2 on CVG.com.
Gamasutra Interviews Kim Swift and Erik Wolpaw
Posted @ 3:32 PM, March 25 2008, By: DigiQ8 In Portal

Gamasutra had a chance to speak to Kim Swift and Erik Wolpaw, the lead designers behind Valve's award-winning Portal and now they have a massive 8 pages interview on their website.
It is very strange to say, but it had more emotional impact than some other things that really try to be epic and sweeping, and narratives that are all about revenge and you have to kill someone because they killed your father.

EW: Yeah. It's always more satisfying for me, personally, when I feel like I can sort of understand the villain in a book or movie and empathize with them a bit. It makes their villainy a lot more tragic.
This is a must read interview, don't miss it!.
Dystopia March Update
Posted @ 7:00 AM, March 25 2008, By: DigiQ8 In Mods

Team Dystopia are back with a new update, including new screenshots of redone maps Silo and Undermine.

The newest addition to Undermine is the ability to use the deep chasms to your advantage. This particular area serves as an escape hatch for excess dust in the cavern, although, the Punks don't know that. When the infiltration has begun, the Corporate defenders cycle harmful gasses and open up the hatch. Down goes the scum!
