PAX 2010: Portal 2 Coop Coverage

Valve has released new images from the Portal 2 PAX demo. The PAX demo is the first public showing of Portal 2's multiplayer coop mode, which features its own set of characters, test chambers, and storyline.

Previews:

  • The first, most important, and most head slapping "I can't believe we don't see this in more games" addition is the "ping" system. Each player can set markers around the levels to indicate where they'd like their partner to fire a portal. Valve explained that this is something complementary to voice chat, since even when your partner can hear you, it's hard to really accurately describe where "over there" is.
  • TeamXbox
The levels inherently look more complicated (even when they aren't) due to the fact that there are many more moving pieces. The gameplay shown was spot on in its tightness, so creating portals for your buddies turns into a pretty easy task. With no more light shed on the single player campaign, the cooperative mode shows enough promise to get excited about all on its own.

Valve Have ‘3 Big Surprises’
11:29 AM September 1, 2010 By: Hectic Glenn | In: Valve | 100 Comments

From the recent PC Gamer interview with Valve, Gabe Newell has said there are at least 3 big surprises in store from Valve in the next 12 months. Gabe said
"I can guarantee you people are going to be surprised at stuff we do. That isn't going to stop any time soon. I'm just laughing because... people will be shocked again.

We have three pretty big surprises in the next 12 months at least."
Valve has grown a lot in size over the past couple of years enabling them to work on several fronts at the same time. It is very possible Valve will have further PS3 titles to announce but I think we all hope for news on another title they should be working on. We hope.

Minecraft Creator in Talks with Valve
11:27 PM August 29, 2010 By: DigiQ8 | In: News, Valve | 36 Comments

It's no secret that Valve has succumbed to Minecraft addiction, a sandbox game from the creator of Left4KDead Markus 'Notch' Persson, who's flying to Bellevue tomorrow to have a meeting with Valve for an undisclosed purpose.

Persson mentioned on his blog a while ago that while he would welcome an injection of venture capital, he intends to retain his independence over his game.
I would love to hire some people and set up a small development studio in Stockholm. This would include additional programmers, and someone in charge of the website and community features. And an artist that can make a nicer glass texture.
I am not interested in changing the openness of how minecraft is developed, nor do I have any intention of selling the product to anyone else; I want to be the one developing it.

My development speed has gone down lately because of all this crazy cool but scary stuff happening, but I promise you it will go up again soon, regardless of what happens.

Valve Cut Portal 2 Competitive Multiplayer
11:09 AM August 27, 2010 By: DigiQ8 | In: Portal 2 | 15 Comments

It turns out that the Co-op mode wasn't the only multiplayer mode planned for Portal 2. In an interview with 1Up, writer Erik Wolpaw revealed that a competitive multiplayer mode was in development, but was cut because it was a "pure chaos."

The multiplayer was kind of like Speedball with portals and, basically, didn't work.
We went down that path, actually, for a little while and had something up and running -- the best way to describe it is sort of speedball meets Portal," Wolpaw told 1Up. "You know, a sports analog. And it quickly became apparent that while it's fun for about two seconds to drop portals under people and things like that, it quickly just devolves into pure chaos. It lost a lot of the stuff that was really entertaining about Portal, which was puzzle-solving. Cooperative puzzle-solving was just a much more rewarding path.
The actual gameplay of the mode involved moving a ball from one end of a space to the other quickly using portals. The competition would try to stop the player by, for example, trapping them with a portal shot onto the ground.

The multiplayer mode was "a hot mess" Erik Wolpaw said and that is why it was scrapped.
Valve Scrapped Flying Fairy Game Before L4D
10:58 AM August 27, 2010 By: Hectic Glenn | In: Valve | 5 Comments

In an interview with PC Gamer earlier this month, Gabe, Doug & Erik were asked about what things Valve have failed at doing. Doug mentioned a prototype for a game before development on Left 4 Dead began later that year.
Doug Lombardi: There were a few failed starts to build Left 4 Dead.
Gabe Newell: Well, there was the flying fairy game. Is that the one you were referring to?
Erik Johnson: That was just a different game that, when we stabbed it… (everyone laughs)
Doug Lombardi: … It turned into Left 4 Dead!
Gabe was positive about the failure of the project. “That was a useful failure to us,” says Gabe, “because it was so clearly dumb that it made us say, ‘OK, what are we actually good at that we can do instead?’” The full interview will be in the next edition of PC Gamer out on September 1st.

For those who aren't mad hatters you may be mystified by this contest, however the TF2 blog has announced the start of the hat describing contest where you can submit a short description for any of the TF2 hats to appear next to the item in game.
Fans have been mailing us for some time now, asking for a contest that didn't involve modeling or level design. So now they get their wish. That's right: you'll be competing over who can describe hats the best. Introducing the first ever TF2 Hat Describing Contest.

In it, you can compete with other fans to write fictional missives about the glory of your favorite TF2 hat, with the prize of getting your words right into TF2 itself. The text will show up in the item descriptions, so it should be short and fun.
See the rules and enter here. In other news on the blog, with Team17's Worms Reloaded soon to be released on Steam this week, anyone who pre-purchases will get a visual upgrade for the soldier sporting the iconic holy hand grenades from worms as well as a new worms themed hat. TF2 Blog.
AI Director and Brutal difficulty added to Alien Swarm
5:40 PM August 23, 2010 By: Sliver | In: Steam Games, Valve | 5 Comments

Valve has recently updated Alien Swarm, the free game released via Steam nearly a month ago, with new features that have been most requested from the community.

New in the update is Onslaught Mode, which adds the A.I Director, a program that dynamically spawns enemies based on the player's performance, as seen in Left 4 Dead. Along with that comes the Brutal difficulty mode, which is said to make it impossible to finish even one level.

On top of all of that they have added Hardcore Friendly Fire, which when enabled will greatly increase the damage done via friendly fire. To round it off they have also added three new IAF promotion ranks: Platinum Star, Osmium Star, and the coveted Iridium Medallion. You can see the entire news update here.
