Team Fortress 2 Community Contribute Items Added
10:07 AM March 19, 2010 By: Hectic Glenn | In: Team Fortress 2 | 10 Comments ![]() Going back a few months, Valve offered players to opportunity to design new items for the Team Fortress universe (Contribute). As long as the community items maintained the same TF2 style Valve promised rewards for those items which make the grade. These have now been added to TF2. Some of the new hats include the triboniophorus tyrannus for the pyro, the killer's kabuto for the soldier, the hound dog for the heavy, the shooter's sola topi for the sniper and the magistrate's mullet for the spy. Check them out on the TF2 Wiki. From the implementation of features requested by players and mapmakers, to unique community items given to valuable community contributors, to the purchasing and shipping of popular maps, to the ARG-style product announcement of Portal 2, we've tried to include our players in the ongoing challenge of improving our games and their communities.TF2 Blog. |

Valve's John Cook has spoken to Joystiq about the upcoming arrival of Steam on Mac OS X, he reveals how important Valve see this move:
We consider this to be the biggest event in Steam's history since the service was first launched. There are several people involved, from the UI team working on Mac support in the Steam client to graphics engineers working on the native version of Source and our games. It's a big effort. Steamworks Added to Unreal 3 Engine
12:31 PM March 11, 2010 By: Hectic Glenn | In: Steam | 2 Comments
In a new deal today between Epic Games and Valve, the Steamworks tools are to be integrated for easier use to all Unreal Engine 3 licensees. The Unreal engine has been used for many top titles in the past few years and this move should allow further titles easier compatibility with Steam (and perhaps mods?). More from Gabe:
Epic's technology is one of the most widely used engines in the industry and has powered many of the best games created in the past 10 years. It's an honor to have Steamworks included in the technology offered to all Unreal Engine 3 licensees. It's hard to think of a larger, better targeted group of developers who could derive more benefit from the Steamworks services."More over at Shacknews. |

Valve Brings Steam and Source to the Mac
12:27 PM March 8, 2010 By: Hectic Glenn | In: Steam | 74 Comments ![]() An official announcement from Valve now states that Steam and the Source engine will become available on OSX. Valve's library of games including Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike, Portal, and the Half-Life series will be available in April this year. Gabe says: As we transition from entertainment as a product to entertainment as a service, customers and developers need open, high-quality Internet clients. The Mac is a great platform for entertainment services.Valve are also announcing a new Steam technology - Steam Play. Jason Holtman tells us more! Steamworks for the Mac supports all of the Steamworks APIs, and we have added a new feature, called Steam Play, which allows customers who purchase the product for the Mac or Windows to play on the other platform free of charge. For example, Steam Play, in combination with the Steam Cloud, allows a gamer playing on their work PC to go home and pick up playing the same game at the same point on their home Mac. We expect most developers and publishers to take advantage of Steam Play. These versions will not be emulations but full native conversions according to John Cook The inclusion of WebKit into Steam, and of OpenGL into Source gives us a lot of flexibility in how we move these technologies forward. We are treating the Mac as a tier-1 platform so all of our future games will release simultaneously on Windows, Mac, and the Xbox 360. Updates for the Mac will be available simultaneously with the Windows updates. Furthermore, Mac and Windows players will be part of the same multiplayer universe, sharing servers, lobbies, and so forth. We fully support a heterogeneous mix of servers and clients. The first Mac Steam client will be the new generation currently in beta testing on Windows. The recently announced Portal 2 will be Valve's first simultaneous release for Mac and Windows. |
