News from Gabe concerning Steam intrusion
7:17 PM February 10, 2012 By: Sliver | In: News, Steam | 4 Comments

An email has been sent out from Gabe alerting Steam users of the results from last year, in which Steam was hacked.
Dear Steam Users and Steam Forum Users

We continue our investigation of last year's intrusion with the help of outside security experts. In my last note about this, I described how intruders had accessed our Steam database but we found no evidence that the intruders took information from that database. That is still the case.

Recently we learned that it is probable that the intruders obtained a copy of a backup file with information about Steam transactions between 2004 and 2008. This backup file contained user names, email addresses, encrypted billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. It did not include Steam passwords.

We do not have any evidence that the encrypted credit card numbers or billing addresses have been compromised. However as I said in November it's a good idea to watch your credit card activity and statements. And of course keeping Steam Guard on is a good idea as well.

We are still investigating and working with law enforcement authorities. Some state laws require a more formal notice of this incident so some of you will get that notice, but we wanted to update everyone with this new information now.

So remember to always keep a watchful eye, and be sure to check Halflife2.net for any more updates!

6:08 PM February 10, 2012 By: Hectic Glenn | In: Community, Interviews | 5 Comments

Yesterday afternoon I was fortunate enough to spend some time chatting with Merle Dandridge alongside William from Podcast 17. Merle is most well known as the voice of Alyx Vance but she is also a professional actress on the stage, television and film.

We talk about her time working with Valve, getting the role of Alyx, feedback from the role and some of her favourite moments being Alyx Vance. You can listen now to the interview on the Podcast 17 site and support Merle via her facebook.
Blizzard open case over Valve using Dota Trademark
6:19 AM February 10, 2012 By: Sliver | In: DotA, Valve | 32 Comments

Blizzard has opened a lawsuit suing Valve for their use of the name Dota in their upcoming game Dota 2. Dota, of course, is short for "Defence of the Ancients," a very popular Warcraft 3 map, which spawned the large amounts of MOBA games now available.

The original news story can be found here, and the lawsuit here.

Editors note: To clarify, Blizzard are not formally suing Valve but requesting Valve be denied the registration of the DotA (or similar) trademarks. Several issues come to light here including the ownership of the DotA map itself which was made in the Warcraft 3 world editor and requires the acceptance of a EULA which claims all content made is owned by Blizzard.

1:09 AM February 8, 2012 By: Sliver | In: Portal 2, Steam Games | 10 Comments

To celebrate the addition of Skyrim as a Steam Workshop title, Valve and Bethesda have teamed up to have the space obsessed Personality Core from Portal 2 as a companion in Skyrim.

Steam Workshop allows users to create, share, and rate their own and other's creations for different Steam Workshop titles. You can read the full blog post here and see the Space Core here.
It’s time to play Half-Life 2
6:37 PM February 4, 2012 By: Chris_D | In: Half-Life 2 | 19 Comments

In about 20 minutes from now (19:00 GMT) a very large number of Half-Life fans will be launching Half-Life 2 in an attempt, amongst other things, to get Valve's attention.

To put it in some perspective, Half-Life 2 is currently ranked about 30th in the list of top Steam games.

We will post more once this number has had time to grow. In the mean time, join in the conversation here.

Update: And... it's all over. Unfortunately Half-Life 2 did not quite make the top 10. But it did reach 11! Not bad at all and getting up to a peak of 13,216 concurrent players from the 3000 or so when we originally made this post earlier, is certainly not to be sniffed at. You can see the incredible spike in activity here

New Hosted Forum: Welcome, “A Call for Communication”
12:52 AM February 3, 2012 By: Chris_D | In: News | 15 Comments

It has most likely not escaped your attention recently that a certain Steam Community group has been attracting rather a lot of attention recently.

A little over two weeks ago, the group had a mere 10,000 members. Today, it hits the 40,000 mark.

We feel that, although the group has come under some criticism, that actually it is becoming an important part in bringing the Half-Life community together in a new way.

With that in mind, we have invited them to host an official forum, here at Halflife2.net to help spread awareness of the group and support it in organising future events.

So, join in the conversation now right here.
